GIRL SCOUT HIGHEST AWARDS Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma is proud to announce the girls who have earned the highest awards for their levels over the past year. With a progression of learning about sustainability to ensuring that it occurs, each level of the highest awards includes girl-led selection of a project where she and her team can make a difference while learning about teamwork, decision-making, planning, budgeting, facilitating, reporting, and evaluating. Girls are not required to earn one award before the next level. For example, if a girl did not earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award as a Girl Scout Junior, she may still choose to work on the Girl Scout Silver Award when she becomes a Girl Scout Cadette. 4
GIRL SCOUT BRONZE AWARD When Girl Scout Juniors (grades 4-5) team up to make a difference in their community, they learn important leadership skills, discover new passions, and watch how seemingly small actions make a big difference. It all adds up to the Girl Scout Bronze Award—the highest honor a Junior can achieve. 5

TEN-YEAR AWARD PINS Girls who have been members of the Girl Scout organization for ten years are eligible to wear a special Ten-Year Award. These girls are members of troops, individual members, and members of special interest groups. Many have extracurricular activities and some even have jobs, and still, they find ways to fit Girl Scouts into their busy schedules. GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD The mark of the truly remarkable. Gold Award Girl Scouts are the dreamers and the doers who take “make the world a better place” to the next level. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable—proof that not only can she make a difference, but that she already has. Seniors and Ambassadors (grades 9-12) who earn the Girl Scout Gold Award tackle issues that are dear to them and drive lasting change in their communities and beyond. Think of the Girl Scout Gold Award as a key that can open doors to scholarships, preferred admission tracks for college, and amazing career opportunities. 11
Megan Brillhart Cat Beds for Shelters Advisor - Jessica Padilla-Hernandez Megan, seeing the decrease in cat adoptions and wanting to give the new family and cat an easier transition to a new home, worked with several local pet adoption agencies and youth volunteers to create comfortable cat beds so that the animal would have at the shelter from day one and leave the shelter to go to their new family with a familiar item. Megan’s project will remain sustainable in many ways. She reached out to her church and to youth volunteer organizations to continue making the cat beds for the approved shelters, she created an instructional worksheet for shelters to hand out, and she created a YouTube instructional video that she sent out to organizations that would be interested in the project in her community and even outside her community. Megan graduated in May of 2019. She now attends Tulsa Community College. 12
Andrea Chandler Jenks East Before-Care Advisor – Kody Engle Andrea, seeing the lack of affordable childcare during new school start times and during collaboration days for the Jenks East Elementary teachers, established a volunteer led before school care program for teachers on the school’s collaboration days. Andrea worked with her high school’s Key Club, a volunteer club through Jenks High School, to provide volunteers and hung fliers up at Jenks East Elementary to inform the teachers about the new before school child care. The project will be sustained by Jenks Elementary and the Jenks High School Key Club. Andrea graduated from Jenks High School in May of 2019. She was a member of Troop 140. 13
Abigail (Abbie) Claussen Virtual Music Library Advisor – Alex Claussen After her school combined the mid-high and senior-high campuses, Abbie noticed the over whelming increase in paper sheet music. To make it easier on the school and students, Abbie took inventory and created a completely new online database to store all 1,200 pieces of music in their band library. Abbie produced and equipped the band staff with the foundation to continue to add music to their extensive library. Abbie has been a Girl Scout for 11 years and was a member of Troop 597. She is currently attending the University of Central Oklahoma where she is majoring in music education and hopes to teach elementary music after she graduates. Her advice to younger Girl Scouts is to connect with the other girls in your troop because they can become life-long friends! Also, she recommends to not be afraid to set goals and do what you can to achieve them! 14
Makenzi Hines Fostering for the Future Advisors – Sherri Hardy, Louise Hoover, and Milissa Hines Makenzi, witnessing the lack of understanding and education involving fostering animals, addressed the issue by teaching the community at Pet Adoption League’s (PAL) adoption events about fostering animals, introducing “Foster Fridays” on PAL’s social media platforms, and creating flyers to distribute at PAL events and in the community. Makenzi’s efforts will be sustainable with the help of PAL’s social media coordinator who will continue posting “Foster Fridays” and will reprint and distribute fostering flyers. Makenzi has been a Girl Scout for 13 years, was a member of Troop 1260, and is now a Lifetime Girl Scout. Makenzi currently attends the University of Central Oklahoma where she is studying Biology and Forensic Science: Molecular Biology. After completing her undergraduate, she hopes to return for her Masters with the goal of eventually completing a PhD and becoming a DNA analyst at a crime lab. She would love to continue volunteering with animal rescues. Makenzi’s advice to younger Girl Scouts is to take advantage of the programs and activities to try as many new things as you can. You never know when something you try will end up being a new love of yours. You may even find out you want a career through something you try! 15
Anna Jones Join the Pack: Self Advocacy Day Advisor – Michelle Keiper After learning that one in five people have dyslexia and the lack of teaching tools in Oklahoma schools, Anna began working with Decoding Dyslexia to create a curriculum for an annual event to teach kids with dyslexia how to use their strengths and advocate for accommodations that can help them be more successful. Anna’s first event was held virtually and reached many kids, parents, educators, and lawmakers! She has already had individuals ask for the event to be held at their schools. Anna, herself, also grew from this event by allowing her to get more comfortable with public speaking. Anna has been a Girl Scout for 13 years and is a member of Troop 347. She plans to attend college after she graduates high school and major in early child care. Anna’s advice to younger Girl Scouts is to never give up, the differences we have help make us stronger together. 16
Lilian (Lily) Jones Buffs Go Green Advisor – Lori Few Lily, continuing to see a lack of recycling in her school district, created a recycling program throughout the McAlester Public School system. Through reading materials, presentations, and interactive games, Lily went into each school to teach students and teachers which items can be recycled. Lily placed recycling bins around each school and worked with the Choctaw Nation’s Going Green program to obtain a new recycling dumpster. The recycling program will be sustained by the schools continuing recycling educational programming and the Choctaw Nation. Lily has been in Girl Scouts for 13 years and is a member of Troop 78. Lily’s advice to younger Girl Scouts is to always be positive and believe you can do anything you can set your mind to. Lily plans to go to college and major in pre vet medicine. 17
Katherine Kavanagh Sunscreen for Everyone Advisor – Melissa Harris Katherine, seeing the rise in skin cancer especially among people of color, implemented a sunscreen program in her town of Tahlequah. Katherine worked with the city government and school board to educate their community about the importance of sun safety through flyers, adding information on their websites and their social media platforms as well as installing sunscreen dispensers in two highly trafficked outdoor areas. The City of Tahlequah Parks and Recreations will continue the maintenance of the dispensers while the city will continue promoting the program. Katherine has been in Girl Scouts for 12 years, is a member of Troop 1226, and will graduate in 2022. After high school, she plans to attend Arkansas College for a Bachelor’s in Nursing and joining the Air Force. Katherine’s advice to younger Girl Scouts is to never give up, no matter how hard it gets. 18
Romey Leonard Community Connect Advisor – Ann Mayse Being impacted by the protests in our country, Romey aimed to address the lack of cultural competence and inclusion in her own community. Romey immediately began working with the closest community to her, the Girl Scout Cherokee Strip Service Unit. Romey researched about different cultures and made a “program in a box” that offered PowerPoints, books, activities, and games that made it easy for leaders and girls to talk about diversity, inclusion, and empathy for years to come. Romey’s main goal was summed up in a quote she provided by Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in saying “while we may come from different places and speak in different tongues, our heart’s beat as one.” Romey has been a Girl Scout for 13 years and was a member of Troop 241. Romey is currently attending Northern Oklahoma College and is studying psychology in hopes of being a mental health counselor. 19
Emily Milton Focus on Reading Advisor – Kara Lee Wanting to bring awareness of the importance of reading into her community, Emily created a literacy program at Jenks Care Point aimed at younger students and English as a Second Language families. Emily implemented a book drive at Holland Hall and at South Tulsa Baptist Church. With the books collected she created a reading program for a Back to School event where she read to younger students, discussed the importance of reading, handed out pamphlets to help get families more involved in the project and to educate them on the benefits of reading and education. Emily’s project sustainability consists of continuing reading education through pamphlets distributed at Jenks Care Point, Holland Hall students and South Tulsa Baptist Church members to continue book collections, and Emily’s blog created around her project. Emily graduated high school in 2019 and was a member of Troop 393. 20
Carys Stringer Give Blood, Get Cookies! Program Advisor – Ken Kurtz Carys, seeing that blood is always in short supply and with the pandemic exacerbating the issue, decided to partner with the American Red Cross and Girl Scout troops to address the issue by creating the Give Blood, Get Cookies! Program. Carys’ program consists of leading seminars and presenting training videos that educate girls and troop leaders on how to create their own blood drives while working with their local American Red Cross. The blood drives will continue to bring awareness to both organizations as well as an increase in blood donations. Carys has been in Girl Scouts for 11 years and is with Troop 1438. She plans on studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma with also an interest in medical school and writing young adult novels. Carys’ advice to younger Girl Scouts is to try everything! You never know where it may lead! 21
Ariana White What Does Your Heart Have to Say? Advisor – Heather VonHartitzsch When heart disease took someone (David VonHartitzsch) close unexpectedly, Ariana wanted to educate others about the most common but often unknown cause of death. Ariana partnered with two locations that were close to David, researched the disease, created educational pamphlets, and designed, created, and secured two heart health plaques. The plaques will not only educate others about heart health but will also put a face to the disease as well as honor David’s memory. Ariana is a Senior at Wright Christian Academy and has been a Girl Scout member of Troop 2603 for 13 years. She plans on attending the University of the Ozarks and studying health science and biology and plans on going to Physician Assistant School to become a PA. Advice that Ariana would give to younger Girl Scouts is to stay committed to Girl Scouts because it is worth it. 22
Emmah Wilson Career Closet - The Sunshine Closet of Texoma Advisor – Shawnda McGinnis Seeing foster children who age out of the system with nothing, Emmah reached out to J27 Ministry where she created the Sunshine Closet. The closet will be a place for young women who are newly out of foster care to access clothes, personal items, school supplies for college, and additional items to better their futures. She also established rules for the program allowing individuals to earn “sunshine dollars” to pay for the items while giving back to help others. The young women can work in the closet to earn the dollars as well. The Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority will continue to carry-out the Sunshine Closet as their on-going service project. Emmah’s Gold Award project taught her more about time management along with building her leadership skills. Emmah attends Colbert High School and will graduate in 2022. 23
Trinity Wilson Before You Make a Game Advisor – Tammy Talbot Seeing a lack of programming guides and being passionate about the STEM field, Trinity wanted to help teens and young adults properly start a game development project by creating an informal packet about what to expect when programming, particularly video games. The packet explains how to start a game development project, the tools you need, ways to obtain knowledge to begin, and ways to prioritize and keep oneself from burning out and losing focus. Trinity reached out to developers, computer scientists, and many others in the field to get the expert feedback needed to create this online resource. Trinity was in Girl Scouts for 3 years with Troop 1209. Trinity graduated from McAlester High School in 2020 and now is in college where she plans to enter the CyberSecurity field after she graduates. Her advice to younger Girl Scouts is to take the time to stop and think when you encounter a problem. 24
Carrie Witchey Plan Q Advisor – Michele Magalassi Being personally affected by suicide made Carrie Witchey aware that there are not enough resources out there for teens in her community to fully understand the impact of this important subject. Carrie implemented a school wide one-hour presentation over the QPR: Question, Persist, and Refer to Stop Suicide in its Track suicide prevention method to be held during her school’s “We Matter Week”, formed a committee in her school, and created an annual presentation of QPR to be used in the future at her school. Carrie has been a Girl Scout for nine years and is a member of Troop 1438. She plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma and go to medical school after to become a Forensic Pathologist with a dual major in Chemistry. She also plans to advocate for suicide awareness throughout the rest of her life. Her advice for younger Girl Scouts is to “keep moving forward”. C O N G R AT U L AT I O N S Megan, Andrea, Abbie, Makenzie, Anna, Lily, Katherine, Romey, Emily, Carys, Ariana, Emmah, Trinity, and Carrie —you are truly remarkable! 25

Katherine Kavanagh Bronze Cross Statement - Roberta Preston We are proud to announce that one of our Girl Scouts, Katherine Kavanagh has earned the Bronze Cross National Lifesaving Award from GSUSA. The Bronze Cross is one of the highest honors Girl Scouts can bestow. Part of the Girl Scout program since the beginning of the movement, the award is given to a Girl Scout who has saved or attempted to save human life under circumstances that indicate heroism or risk to her own life. The award is reserved for those Girl Scouts who have performed heroic acts beyond the degree of maturity and training to be expected at their age. Katherine saved the life of her father and brother during a scuba diving incident in January. Through review of the statements from her father and brother we can truly understand the quick thinking, training and true heroism she displayed. Katherine is also a Gold Award Girl Scout. We are so very proud of Katherine! 33
