McCalla: How it all began. Standard
Chemical
Dad was always hands-on, learning his trade in 1938, working as a salesman, for Standard
Chemical in Pomona. From his interactions with his clients, he saw the need for a cleaning
service that marries the correct application of chemicals, cleaning supplies and equipment
in order to get the job done right. 1953
McCalla
McCalla company started as a soap manufacture in Los Angeles called The McCalla Soap
Company
Company. He soon realized he needed to get back to his roots of janitorial maintenance.
In 1953, he opened the doors to McCalla Company, located in the San Fernando Valley,
on Van Nuys Blvd. This retail store would sell all the products, chemicals and equipment
needed for janitorial maintenance. At this time, mom came to work, to help with the
bookkeeping and help manage the office, so dad could focus on the retail sales and
management of the store front.
Over time, the business grew and their son, Richard McCalla and Richard’s best friend from
high school, Larry Phillippe, stepped in to help mom and dad. No computers, no employees,
just lots of hard work. That dedication paid off and their partnership grew the business. In
1976, after dad had passed away, Richard and Larry purchased the company from mom.
Growing pains, 25 plus employees added, more square footage built for products and 1976
equipment all helped to shape McCalla Company into who they are today. They have built McCalla and Phillippe
a strong bond of trust with their customers as the company grew with outside salesman, partnership
great customer service, and very loyal employees. Through 40 plus years of industry change,
McCalla was able to keep current and thrive with products, equipment and solutions for
their customers.
In 2014, we strengthened the company further by adding the third generation. Like the
generation before them, they were also hands on at McCalla. Most started when they were
teenagers, bottling product, stocking shelves, helping unload trucks and pitching in with
customer service. Craig, Ken, Kevin and Debra are now poised to take the company into the
next chapter. We are excited to continue our legacy for generations to come with our new
leadership.
