HI FILM FANS,
                             Well… the summer blockbuster
season is over. I’d say it wasn’t
                             exactly a vintage summer, my
                             favourite blockbusters were
                             AVENGERS: ENDGAME and
                             ROCKETMAN. But there’s plenty
on the horizon to get excited
                             about.

Horror fans have two Stephen King
films to get excited about IT: CHAPTER TWO
brings Pennywise the clown back to the big
screen whilst DOCTOR SLEEP is the horror
maestro’s sequel to The Shining. Don’t worry if you’re a scaredy pants,
there’s loads of others to choose from. Dramas THE GOLDFINCH with
Nicole Kidman and THE KITCHEN starring Melissa McCarthy are showing
in October.

Renee Zellweger turns in an amazing performance as Judy Garland in
JUDY and we are excited to see all the cast of DOWNTON ABBEY back for
the film. There’s also the return of Spanish auteur Pedro Alomodvar with
PAIN AND GLORY.

If you’re after something a little quirky then don’t miss HAIL SATAN?, a documentary
about the growing group in America pushing for political equality. ZOMBIELAND:
DOUBLE TAP should also deliver off-kilter giggles and we’ve heard amazing things
about JOKER with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.

Alongside the great film releases, there’s our usual schedule of great Screen Arts
events and classic films. This brochure features the start of the new Royal Opera
House Season and Phoebe Waller-Bridge starring in FLEABAG for the National
Theatre. And don’t miss MEAN GIRLS and PULP FICTION on the big screen!

MY PICK
It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with the SPOTLIGHT ON… team as they have
programmed their first screenings - THE WICKER MAN & BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE
SUNDANCE KID. But I’m also super excited to see THE LITTLE MERMAID again. Oh
and a cheeky bit of METALLICA at the cinema!

who works at the Foreign Office. As their relationship develops, 45 YEARS
it becomes clear that he is a complicated and untrustworthy
influence on her life and career.

BUZZ The buzz for this film couldn’t be any stronger. With
director Joanna Hogg catching the eye of Martin Scorsese, who
executive produced this. It has some of the best reviews of the EXHIBITION
year including 5 stars from The Observer, The Telegraph, Time
Out, Variety and many more. It’s a breakthrough performance
for Honor Swinton Byrne and her real life mother - Tilda
Swinton - plays her mother in the film, Tom Burke also turns in
a fantastic performance as the boyfriend with a secret to hide.

SYNOPSIS Artist L.S. Lowry lived all his life with his over-
bearing mother Elizabeth. Bed-ridden and bitter, Elizabeth
actively tried to dissuade her bachelor son from pursuing his
artistic ambitions, whilst never failing to voice her opinion at MR TURNER
what a disappointment he was to her.

BUZZ Director Adrian Noble returns to film after directing
the Screen Arts production of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING
EARNEST. It’s great to see Timothy Spall return to the art world
after his incredible performance in MR TURNER, and working THE LADY IN THE VAN

draws you in to the performances.

SYNOPSIS Life meets art in this loosely autobiographical
story from Pedro Almodovar. A film director in decline reflects
on the choices he’s made and recalls a series of experiences
and encounters from his past: His childhood growing up in the JULIETA
60’s in Valencia, his first love affair in 80’s Madrid, the pain
of heartbreak and his early discovery of cinema. The past and
present soon come crashing down around him.

BUZZ Marking director Pedro Almodovar’s 8th collaboration
with Antonio Banderas, the film is a very thinly veiled depiction WILD TALES
of Almodovar’s early life. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at
Cannes and winning best actor for Banderas, the film is one
of Almodovar’s more subtle dramas which gets you right in the
heart with its air of nostalgia. The film also won an award at
Cannes for its delightful soundtrack by Alberto Iglesias. Pedro
Almodovar is one of the finest film-makers working today and
it’s wonderful to see his creative vision on the big screen. ALL ABOUT MY

SYNOPSIS In 1927, King George V and Queen Mary decide to visit the Crawley family
estate with their royal court in tow. This honour results in a comedy of errors of sorts for the
Crawleys, given that they’re significantly down their usual number of butlers, cooks, valets, and
housekeepers due to their dwindling funds. As such, they beg Carson to come out of retirement
to organise the visit of a lifetime.

BUZZ Much of this plot is shrouded in mystery to keep the Downton Abbey fans hanging on till
it’s release. Julian Felllowes has once again returned to write the script for this return to the
Abbey. The cast are pretty much all back as well, including Jim Carter as Carson and Maggie
Smith delivering her trademark put-downs as Violet Crawley.

STAFF CHOICE
There’s a lot film enthusiasts working at the Connaught! And
they all bug me all the time to play their favourite film. Those
that annoy me enough, even get their films on the big screen!
So we present the film choice of Box Office and Front of House
member - Alison Weeks.

‘So excited to have this film showing on the big screen! One
of the ultimate feel-good films with an infectious soundtrack.
Bring friends and family - you will not be disappointed and you’ll
come out wanting to see it again and again even if you have to
walk 500 miles!’

SUNSHINE ON LEITH (PG)
Sunshine on Leith is a feelgood musical based on the
sensational stage hit, featuring music by pop-folk band The
Proclaimers. The film follows the stories of Davy and Ally, who
have to re-learn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming
home from serving in Afghanistan. (98m)

BUZZ As soon as we find out Elisabeth Moss is in something
then we are fully on board! She is an amazing actress who
always seems to pick fantastic film & TV projects such as THE BELLE

is also fab with Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish taking
more serious roles than they are accustomed to. This marks
the directorial debut for Andrea Berloff, who has made her

SYNOPSIS Failed comedian Arthur Fleck encounters violent
thugs while wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a
clown. Disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into
madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known THE DARK KNIGHT
as The Joker. An origin of the iconic arch nemesis not seen
before on the big screen, it is not only a gritty character study,
but also a broader cautionary tale.

BUZZ Todd Phillips’ film has been picking up plaudits by all
those who have seen it. It’s been chosen as the opening film TAXI DRIVER
for both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals with each festival
director singing its praises. Joaquin Phoenix’s performance has
been singled out as an Oscar front-runner. The film has the feel
of a 70s/80s dark character drama and we can’t wait to see
Robert De Niro as a character who looks like Rupert Pupkin
from THE KING OF COMEDY.
