(863) 968-5024 www.berkleyknights.net September 2021 Covid-19 Update Gayle Thomas It’s been a busy start to the 2021 school year! We want to first say THANK YOU to Principal our parents for being so quick to notify our school of student illnesses, exposures, and positive cases. By working together, we have been able move quickly to notify Suzanne Martin and quarantine close contacts to prevent additional spread from occurring. We Assistant Principal appreciate how proactive, helpful, and understanding our Berkley parents have been throughout this pandemic. Deanna Brewer Please continue to help us with these efforts so we can continue to keep as many Assistant Principal students on campus as possible, and our school open for instruction. If your child is sick, has been exposed to Covid, or someone in your household is waiting on test re- sults, stay home and contact our school’s Covid Coordinator, Deanna Brewer by email at deanna.brewer@berkleyknights.net, or by calling the school at 863-968-5024 to get further steps. Freestyle Friday 7:50-3:00 Our first Freestyle Friday is September 3rd. If you are unfamiliar with Freestyle Fridays, we’ve designated the first Friday of each month as a special day for students to dress out of their Berkley uniform for $1. This money goes directly back to the grade level for supplies, 7:30-3:30 activities, etc. While students are still expected to wear school appropriate attire, they have the opportunity to wear their favorite outfit and display a little of their own personal style. Please remember, even on Freestyle Fridays students may not wear flip flops, shoes without backs, or sleeveless tops. Starts at 7:30am Moment of Silence Governor DeSantis recently signed a new law to include a moment of silence at the beginning of each school day. Each morning after our pledge, students participate in (on designated days) a moment of silence, which lasts one to two minutes. The law encourages parents to 12:30 discuss the moment of silence with their child and to make suggestions as to the best use of this time. What’s the Plan? With hurricane season in full swing, it’s important to know our plan in case weather becomes unfavorable in our area. Berkley follows the District’s directives for school closures related to weather or emergency ’ conditions. If Polk County Public Schools are closed for inclement weather, Berkley will be closed as well. We will do our best to get information to parents through social media, email, and our school website, but please note that if Oct. 8th @ 7am the news reports Polk Public Schools are closed, Berkley will be closed as well. If your child’s transportation plan may be affected by rainy weather, please make a plan in advance with your child so they know how to go home on rainy days.
Meet Berkley’s Administration We want to take a moment and introduce our families to Berkley’s administrators. Our administration is dedicated to the students and staff at Berkley and they are committed to our school’s success! We appreciate them and all they do for our school! Here’s just a little about each of our administrators to help you get to know them! Mrs. Gayle Thomas, Principal Mrs. Thomas is now in her 28th year in education. She has been at Berkley since our school opened in 2000. Mrs. Thomas was a classroom teacher for 14 years, and has been an administrator for 14 years. “I’m proud to say I was born and raised in Polk County. In fact, my family is in its seventh generation in Polk County. Lake Gibson was my high school. I received my bachelor’s from Florida Southern College and my master’s from University of South Florida. I am married with two children; who both went through Berkley Charter School. One is now an airline pilot for American Airlines and the other a Junior at University of Florida. My husband just retired from a 33 year career with Lakeland Fire Department. When I’m not at school, I enjoy the mountains of North Carolina, camping, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors.” Mrs. Suzanne Martin, Assistant Principal Mrs. Martin, an educator for 32 years, currently serves as the Assistant Principal and School Counselor at Berkley Charter School. She previously served as an elementary and middle school teacher as well as a School Counselor. This is her 19th year at Berkley Charter School. “I received my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1989, and a master’s degree in School Counseling in 1993 from Western Kentucky University. I also earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from University of South Florida in 2012. I am married with three children. Both my husband and I graduated from Auburndale High School. Go Hounds! We enjoy camping, boating, and being in the outdoors in our free time. Both of my parents were teachers and my three sisters have all been teachers. From a young age, I remember wanting to be a teacher. I enjoy being around children and helping them to grow and learn. I can ’t imagine spending my life doing anything else. It’s been a fun adventure for sure! Ms. Deanna Brewer, Assistant Principal Ms. Brewer has been an educator for 16 years, with the past 10 years being at Berkley Charter. She was a classroom teacher for 7 years, and served as an instructional coach at Berkley for 8 years. “Being an educator has been my dream since the young age of kindergarten. I was fortunate to have amazing teachers, right here in Polk County, who fostered my love for learning and encouraged me to pursue what I loved. I graduated from University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I also hold two master’s degrees; one in Reading Education from the University of South Florida and the second in Educational Leadership from American College of Education. Outside of Berkley, some of my favorite ways to spend my time is with family and friends, traveling, and watching sunrises and sunsets at the beach. I consider myself very fortunate to be at Berkley, and I look forward to many great years ahead with our families.” Just a few reminders… Mark your calendars!
