2021 American Boxer Club National Week
                         COVID-19 Operating Guidelines
The 2021 American Boxer Club (ABC) National Week will work with state and local governments and
public health authorities prior to the start of the week to determine risks and mitigation measures in
order to protect the health and safety of all participants.

LIABILITY NOTICE:
By attending any of the American Boxer Club (ABC) events or activities (ABC events) during ABC’s
National Specialty Week, September 17-24, 2021, at the Wyndham Hotel Indianapolis West or any
other venue in which ABC activities are being held, in any capacity, I understand and agree that I
voluntarily assume full responsibility for any risks of loss or personal injury, including serious illness,
injury or death, that may be sustained by me or by others who come into contact with me, as a result of
my presence at ABC events, whether caused by the negligence of ABC or otherwise.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I release, waive, forever discharge and covenant not to sue the
ABC or any of the event-giving clubs and each of the foregoing’s respective administrators, members,
officers, directors, employees, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, contractors, medical services providers,
judges, superintendents or event secretary, and agents, (the “Releasees”) from any and all liability,
claims, demands, actions and causes of action whatsoever arising out of or related to any loss, damage,
illness, or injury, including death, that may be sustained by me or by others who come into contact with
me, whether caused by the negligence of the Releasees, other entities or individuals, or otherwise as a
result of, or related to, my decision to attend ABC events.
The following COVID-19 Operating Guidelines are subject to change as conditions and
requirements are modified, altered, amended or eliminated by local, state and other authorized
officials or authorities.
As a condition of my being allowed to attend ABC events, I will fully comply with: (i) any health and
safety protocols and mitigation measures implemented by ABC; and (ii) all local, state and federal
requirements in effect during ABC events, related to COVID-19. If I test positive for COVID-19 or am
exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID- 19, I agree to notify ABC promptly and prior
to attending any ABC event.

On-Site Process and Procedures
In accordance with the revised COVID-19 requirements issued by the Marion County Health
Department MASKS are no longer mandatory by fully vaccinated or unvaccinated people.
The following individuals will not be permitted on the show site, which is meant to include all inside
locations at the hotel and any open public areas were people might gather:
• An individual who exhibits COVID-19 symptoms,
• An individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last two weeks, or
• An individual who has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the
  last two weeks.
The ABC will post signage that displays all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, requirements,
and orders as well as WHO recommendations and CDC guidelines as they relate to mass gatherings
and sporting events in effect at the time of the show.
Signage will be posted at all entrances to the show site, which identifies the symptoms of COVID-19
and states the following:
To protect others from possible transmission of the virus, anyone who exhibits COVID-19 symptoms
or has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last two weeks
(exception, healthcare personnel who have treated patients using appropriate medical-grade PPE
during the course of performing professional duties), cannot enter the show site. These individuals are
encouraged to contact their health care provider immediately for further medical advice and must obtain
documented clearance from their health care provider before entering the show site. Participants must
assume responsibility for themselves and their own staff (e.g. assistants, etc.).

Recommended Best Practices for ABC
The following Recommended Best Practices have been provided to help all personnel identify possible
risks and developing measures to mitigate those risks:
• Provide hand sanitizing stations with access to soap and water or alcohol based hand sanitizer at
several areas through the show site.
• Cover all coughs and sneezes with a tissue that can then be disposed.
• Disinfect frequently used surfaces.
• Avoid sharing food, drinks and utensils.
• Refrain from shaking hands or other hand or face contact with another person.
• Encourage all attendees to get fully vaccinated before attending the show.

Social Distancing
The ABC reserves the right and authority to enforce social distancing requirements as deemed
appropriate throughout the show site at all times, including but not limited to the following:
• Arrange judges’ and other officials’ areas to comply with social distancing requirements.
• Extra activities will be limited and subject to the same rules and regulations
• Configure grooming to comply with social distancing requirements.

Enforcement Authority
Stewards, Club members, and AKC officials will inform individuals when they are not in compliance
with the regulations and requirements in effect at the show and shall report such situations to the Club
Officials and AKC. The ABC has the authority to remove from the facility any person who does not
comply with the regulations and requirements in effect.
If an individual needs an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act, request should be
submitted, along with documentation of the disability and need for accommodation, to the Show Chair
at address provided in premium. Requests for accommodation will be reviewed on a confidential basis
with a medical consultant.
Participants are required to comply with these and any additional requirements at all times while
present on show site. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the show site.

Ring Procedure
• All dogs enter on one side of the ring and exit on the other side. Follow signage.

Armbands Procedure
• Numbered armbands will be issued at designated tables outside of the showroom.
• Be certain you know your dog’s armband number and class since Ring Stewards and armband tables
  WILL NOT have catalogs available.
• There will be an entrance to the building and an exit to keep distancing, to the extent possible.

Parking Considerations
• Parking area will be maintained completely separate from show area. RV parking is separate from
regular auto parking. Parking area is no less than 15 feet from show area.

                        UNDERSTANDING CARRIER STATE
& HOW TO BREED BETTER DOGS
                            by Dr. Carmen Battaglia
Carmen was given his first dog by his grandfather when he was five years old.
That was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with all aspects of dog behavior,
breeding, training and showing. He has personally bred and finished several
Champions, Select Dogs, Futurity and Maturity winners. Today, he is considered
an expert as well as a highly respected AKC judge of more than 40 breeds.
By education, (holding the Masters and Doctorate from Florida State University),
he is a researcher, lecturer and author. His articles have appeared in the “AKC
Gazette”, “Dog World”, “Dog News”, “Canadian Shepherd Journal”, “South
African Dog Magazine” as well as dog publications in Australia and Ireland.
Being very active in the dog world, Dr. Battaglia is a Director of the American
Kennel Club and has served as Chairman of such important committees as:
National Genetics Committee (German Shepherd Dog Club of America), the American Kennel
Club Committee for the Future, the Operations and Planning Committee, as well as the Health
and Education Delegates Committee. The AKC called upon his expertise in genetics to create and
develop their DNA program. He is also a much-sought-after speaker on this topic for television and
  radio talk shows.
Author of several different books on dog breeding, Dr. Battaglia has gained worldwide recognition,
most notably for the program he developed - “Understanding Carriers & Breeding Better Dogs”.
Popular demand has prompted the creation of a seminar for dog clubs which mirrors his book and
a video of this method which has been presented across the country and considered an imperative
foundation to any successful breeding program.

One combined class, not divided by sex, will be offered for puppies that are at least four (4) months of age but less than six (6) months of age on the date
of the competition. A foreign born dog may enter this class if they are registered in the country of origin. Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of
Breed will be chosen. An AKC registration number or AKC litter number is required for entries.
Dogs are required to be vaccinated (including rabies) in accordance with their veterinarian’s protocol in order to avoid inadvertent transmission of illness

handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers’ organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised
or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years. Dogs may not be exhibited by current assistants and household members of
a professional handler. A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or, assisting a professional handler
at the show or any show during the cluster/weekend. Minors (under 18) with amateur status who reside with professional handlers and current assistants
to professional handlers that are eligible to compete in Junior Showmanship (meet age & amateur status requirements) may personally exhibit dogs in 4
& Under 6 Months Puppy Competition.
AKC Rules in Dealing with Misconduct will be applicable to any person and dog entered at this competition. All applicable rules found in Rules Applying to
Dog Shows will govern the conduct of this competition unless these regulations state otherwise.

(Remember to check the box near the bottom of the entry form)
The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers.
Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of entry on the entry form. Dogs entered in the Amateur-Owner-
Handler class will automatically be marked as eligible to compete in the NOHS. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the judge’s
book, steward’s book & the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the breed level competition for the regular show by an eligible
owner. Professional handlers*, household members and current assistants** to professional handlers may not exhibit the dog
in any NOHS competition during the entire show.
Owner-Handled Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competition including Winners
Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes.
  • If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.
  • If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety
is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety will compete against the eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine
     Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.
  • If neither the Best of Breed nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety are Owner-Handled competition eligible and Select
Dog & Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog
     or Winners Bitch.
  • If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all Champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then choose Best Owner-
Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible Winners.
  • If Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Select Dog & Select Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible
dog remaining in the ring including Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.
  • If the Best of Winners is eligible, the other Winner is ineligible since it was defeated.
  • No class dogs other than the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch are eligible to return to the ring.
* Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers’ organization, distributed rate
cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years.

Attention Owners/Exhibitors of Foreign Registered Dogs
If you are the owner/exhibitor of a dog registered with a foreign registry (not yet dual registered with AKC) please review the eligibility
requirements in The Rules Applying to Dog Shows, chapter 11 section 1.
The dog show rules are posted on the AKC Web site at http://images.akc.org/pdf/rulebooks/RREGS3.pdf.
Most important to note are the following:
1. Dogs must be individually registered with the American Kennel Club by the day of the event to be eligible for exhibit in the Bred
    by Exhibitor class.
2. Dogs are eligible to compete in AKC events using the foreign registration for a period of 30 days. That 30-day period begins with the
date of first exhibit, regardless of whether the dog earned any points or awards. To continue to compete in AKC events beyond the
initial 30-day period the dog must be either individually AKC registered or by the date of the event have been granted an extension
to exhibit using the foreign registration. The owner or agent can request an extension using the form found on the AKC Web site
    at http://images.akc.org/pdf/extenap.pdf.
If you have questions or need assistance with registration or obtaining an extension, please contact the AKC Special Services
Department at: awards@akc.org or (919) 233-9767 (followed by selecting option 4).
Ramps can be used in emergency situations to judge any breed. In an emergency situation, where use of a ramp is
not indicated in the premium list, an exhibitor has the option of withdrawing their entry and receiving a refund.
For the judging of juniors the ramp may be used at the discretion of the judge for the ramp optional breeds.
