About the National Theatre HOURS Our Purpose At the National, we make world-class theatre that is entertaining, challenging and inspiring. And we make it for everyone. About the Lighting Department The Lighting Department’s vision is to allow each Lighting Designer to experience the same standard of excellence and support to realise their design, regardless of which theatre their production is being staged in. The department consists of an average of 30 staff working in the following areas: • Lighting Operations: venue-based operational staff in each of the 3 theatres consisting of Supervisors, Senior Technicians (with either a programming or supervisory bias) and Technicians. • Lighting Control: who along with the theatre’s programmers, look after the theatre’s control & networking technology. • Lighting Resources: run the internal “hire shop” for equipment available to the 3 theatre spaces, supplementing basic rigs for productions. They also take responsibility for events at the NT that require lighting and power such as River Stage, The Deck and Learning events, and support West End transfers and tours where possible.
Job Description Senior Lighting Control Technician Grade 3b (12 Month FTC) Contract Type: 12 Month Fixed Term Contract Hours: An average of 44 hours per week, although we would be open to a discussion and requests for alternative, part-time hours and work patterns as well a potential job share. Salary: £44,782.93 per annum (pro rata where applicable) Responsible to: Lighting Control Manager Responsible for: Lighting Technicians Grade 4 and below including casuals Design Director Studio Manager Purpose of the Role The emphasis of this role is towards lighting control projects, programming lighting consoles and taking a supporting role in all aspects of lighting control platforms in the theatres and the wider building. This involves close liaison with the Lighting Control Manager (LCM), Lighting Operations Manager (LOM), Lighting Resources Manager (LRM), Lighting Programmers and other Lighting Control Technicians within the department; providing regular updates, dealing with issues relating to programming and assisting with delivering and developing informal workplace training. When not engaged in aspects of programming, Senior Lighting Control Technicians are expected to take a leading role in other projects as defined by the LCM and to instigate projects as required.
Job Description Senior Lighting Control Technician Grade 3b (12 Month FTC) Duties and Responsibilities — Supporting the Lighting Control Manager and Lighting Technicians with the implementation of the control & systems requirements for all NT activity on the South Bank, other NT venues and on tour. — Carrying out specific projects as required by the Lighting Control Manager, Lighting Resources Manager, Lighting Operations Manager and Head of Lighting. — Setting up, programming and operating lighting consoles during production periods, rehearsals, and performances at an advanced level. — Preparing and maintaining accurate show files and bibles including plots and records detailing all aspects of luminaries and other performance-related equipment to enable the accurate reproduction of a production's lighting requirements when programming. — Providing and assisting with the technical training of control systems to other members of the department who are engaged with programming and using control platforms. — Configuring and managing network switches to an advanced level, managing servers, and creating and managing virtual machines and client Macs and PCs. Administering DHCP, DNS and network monitoring solutions. — Demonstrating an interest in the continuing development of Eos and other lighting control consoles and systems. Assisting with research and development activities relating to control platforms, contributing to internal and public forums, and liaising with manufacturers e.g. ETC, as defined by the LCM.
Job Description Senior Lighting Control Technician Grade 3b (12 Month FTC) — Keeping abreast of control developments in theatre and developing working relationships with appropriate theatrical organisations to share knowledge and experience of Eos and associated lighting control equipment. — Maintaining and preparing NT and hired control equipment for use in-house or at outside venues to be used by the NT, ensuring all relevant documentation and running stock items are up to date. — Supporting the Lighting Control Manager with the provision of visualisation and auxiliary control software and systems, and maintaining the visualisation suite. — Assisting the Lighting Control Manager support the needs of creative teams, Production Managers, and representatives of visiting companies on lighting related matters. — Carrying out maintenance of all lighting control and related equipment, in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and training received. Implementing fixes from ETC support and other manufacturers as required. — Carrying out risk assessments as necessary and distributing the information to technicians and others as required. — Rigging, checking and focusing automated lighting equipment and setting up equipment for fit-ups, rehearsals, changeovers, and performances alongside other Lighting Technicians. — To actively participate in the testing and evaluation of new equipment, software, platforms and technology for future acquisition and use. — Receiving, collecting and loading/off-loading lighting control and ancillary equipment as required. Collecting and returning equipment from and to storage areas and storing equipment in an organised manner. Maintaining the asset register using departmental asset management software. — Preparing and maintaining documentation for all control systems, infrastructure, and services. — Any other duties as reasonably required.
Job Description Senior Lighting Control Technician Grade 3b (12 Month FTC) Person Specification Essential — Extensive experience in professional theatre. — Proven ability to operate and programme lighting control platforms to an advanced standard and an in-depth knowledge of modern control systems in a theatrical environment. — Ability to diagnose and rectify faults on control systems and networking equipment in a systematic and methodical manner. — Excellent networking experience, including switch configuration and setup of servers and hosted services. A good working knowledge of copper and fibre network hardware. — Excellent communication skills and ideally experience of working with Lighting Designers on large scale productions. A sympathetic approach to creative concepts and the ability to realise the requirements of Lighting Designers, Designers and Directors. — Experience of using CAD, Vectorworks and focus-plotting software to create and amend LX rig plans. Knowledge of lighting visualisation packages would be an advantage. — Excellent IT skills with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). — A good working knowledge of fundamental electrical practice and theory. — Self-motivated with the ability to work well as part of a team under minimum supervision. — An ability and confidence to work at height using appropriate access equipment safely. — The ability to work calmly under pressure and prioritise conflicting demands.
