COLLEGE PARENTS Your college parents are second years and usually at least one of them does your subject. We'll be sending out questionnaires so that we can match you up with them in the next month (check your emails)! Around the end of Michaelmas Term and during Lent Term there are lots of college 'proposals' - this is one of the weirdest but best Cambridge traditions! Marriages can be with anyone, usually someone you are good friends with, and it's fun watching all the proposals. You get 'married' at a special formal in Lent Term, and there is a family formal with the freshers in October. The main reason behind the marriage is of course to be parents to you guys - your parents are there to give you advice, academic or otherwise, before and during your year at Cambridge. You should hear from them before you come to Cambridge. If not, please message Poppy or Harry and we will be happy to help! COVID-19 Don't worry, we're going to make sure that you get to know your college parents despite of 14 possible social restrictions!

5 FAQs ANSWERED Do I need to buy a gown before I arrive? No, you can buy them from Ryder & Aimes on the Highstreet in Cambridge or order them online, but you can get them £5 cheaper (£35 approx.) from the Plodge on the day you arrive. You need them for Matriculation in the first week. Where do we park on move-in day? The porters will direct you on the day but there is a very small car park at the back of Cripps Court (the building where all the freshers live). This is great for moving in, but once all your stuff is out of the car, it is helpful to move the car to either Cranmer Road, Sidgwick Avenue or West Road (the roads coming off Grange Road around Selwyn) or the Rugby Ground car park next door if your parents are staying. When do I find out about my room? All freshers live in Cripps Court. Your room number will be on your first college bill, which you get sent towards the end of September before you arrive. What important documents do I bring with me? Your passport for identity checks, your NHS card/number & an ID (passport or driving licence) for bars/pubs. What formal clothing do I need to bring with me? For matriculation the dress code is formal, which means, suits, jumpsuits, below the knee dresses etc with toe covering shoes. In formals (dinners in the hall throughout term which you book onto) suits must be worn with a jacket and cocktail dresses are allowed, all under your college gown!. 16
PACKING LIST It can seem pretty overwhelming packing for a whole term, so here are our recommendations to help you remember everything! WARDROBE Clothes - don't forget warm jumpers/coats as Cambridge can get quite cold in the Winter! Formal clothes - for formal dinners, suits must be worn with a jacket and cocktail dresses are allowed, all under your college gown! Black tie/Dinner Suit for Snowball (see pg.39 for more details!) Gown (can be bought on arrival too) Outfits for Bops Sports kit/Gymwear Something warm for a fire drill (eg. a dressing gown!) Hangers - you only get given 4 or 5, so bring some more Shoes - including something appropriate for if it gets wet! Facemasks- useful to have even if government guidlines change! Hand Sanitiser- always handy! DESK Folders - these are essential, but choose whatever works for you Holepunch & Stapler Highlighters (and of course a selection of pens & pencils!) Paper (although you can easily buy this from Hall) Diary or planner Printer - printing in the library costs 4p per sheet, so a printer in your room isn't essential, but can be useful for some students Desk mirror - the rooms come with a full length mirror, but this can be useful for those that like doing their make-up! There is a light above the desk and shelves above that, but an extra table lamp can be useful and make it feel more homely! 17
PACKING LIST KITCHEN (KNOWN AS THE GYP) College supplies a toaster, microwave, kettle, sponge, washing up liquid, brush & hoover Kettle - some people like to bring their own for their room (but it's not essential) - you have to register this with college along with any other 'cooking' appliances (toastie maker etc.) in the first few weeks (there's a form on the college website) Cutlery - if you can, find a set with a colour/pattern so you know which ones are yours! Tea towel & optional kitchen roll - can come in handy! Pots & pans - this depends on how much you want to cook! All gyps have hobs with 4 rings, so at least one pan is essential! Glasses & mugs - we would recommend at least two of each so you don't have to wash up constantly Plates & bowls - same as above Bottle & tin openers - we're always looking for these! Tupperware- handy for getting takeout from hall Some extras you might want - chopping board, wooden spoon, colander BATHROOM College provides a shower curtain and a toilet brush, but these items you will need to supply yourself: Bath mat Hand & body towels (bring a few for when one is in the wash!) Soap, shampoo, conditioner & shower gel A toothbrush & toothpaste 18
PACKING LIST BEDDING College provides a mattress topper, but an extra one can be useful to make the bed even more comfy! You will need to bring: Pillows and cover, duvet and cover, sheet (all x2) Blanket(s) - some people like one or two to make the room more cosy College provides a bedside locker & lamp DECORATION & GENERAL THINGS Photos - these help your room feel more like home Pins - in your room you can only put photos on the (large!) pinboards provided, so these are essential Wall planner - you will probably get a free one during Freshers' Week, but some people like to visually plan their days NOTE: College does not allow candles or fairy lights due to fire risks Cushions - a few cushions can make your room more personal and cosy Medicine box - paracetamol, lemsips & plasters are always handy! Drying rack - useful to have a fold up one for your clothes Door stop - a wedge one works best in Cripps! Keeping your door open is a good way to meet people on your corridor Get a bike! Second- BIKE hand ones are normally Lock - the Selwyn bike sheds are pretty secure, available but when parking your bike around Cambridge a at the Freshers' Fair. They good D-lock or wind around lock is essential are so useful as everyone Lights - lots of people opt for ones that click on cycles! You can cycle to and off so that you can keep them safe when you most of Cambridge within park your bike 20 mins. Helmet - a safety requirement for cycling around! 19
FIRST DAY CHECKLIST The first day can be overwhelming and hectic, so here's a few pointers to help you through! Don't hesitate to contact any of the Freshers' Committee, your college parents or the Porters if you need any help: Go to the Porter's Lodge (see map on the back of this guide) to check in & get your key. Find your pigeonhole in the Porters Lodge ( it will have your initials of your first name and your surname e.g.MISS ROBINSON) to find your Freshers Pack. This will have lots of documents in, including a few important forms you must remember to return to college. Your CamCard (universitycard) should be in there as well. Find anyone in a Committee top - who will welcome you and point you in the right direction. There will be refreshments in the Diamond, which will be open on moving-in day, so come and have a chat! Contact your college parents - if you want to say hi!! Identity check - you need to bring your passport to the Tutorial Office (in Ann's Court ) on the first day. Once you've unloaded your stuff and said goodbye to your parents, come and find us in the Diamond or possibly at the marquee (we'll let you know nearer the time) to get started. COVID-19 As of mid-august this information is up to date but do check your emails/facebook! 20
FIRST WEEK CHECKLIST You will be busy having fun and settling in but here is a reminder of a few admin things that need to be done ideally in the first week: Connect to Selwyn's wifi - this is 'SC-Wifi'. Just go on to any internet webpage and follow the instructions on screen (log in with your Raven login) then relaunch the browser. Connect to Eduroam - this is the uni-wide wifi, and is also available at many other participating institutions, so you can connect to the internet anywhere. You use your full Cambridge email as your username and for your password you collect a login token from this website using your Raven login: https://tokens.csx.cam.ac.uk/ConnecttoUniofCam Register with your GP - Newnham Walk Surgery is closest to Selwyn. Just drop in with your NHS number, personal details and ID - it takes about 15 minutes to fill out the forms. Register your bike - fill in the form online or get one from Plodge. You'll need your bike number, which is usually underneath the frame. Once you've done it, take it to Plodge so they can attach a Selwyn tag. This is essential as it means the Porters will know it is a Selwyn bike and won't remove it from the bike sheds. Book & attend your DoS & Tutor meetings- you will be emailed the link to book a slot, so check your emails! They are short and just a simple intro to academic & general Selwyn life. These will take place before lectures begin - you may have to meet your supervisors for the term in this time too. COVID-19 As of mid-august this information is up to date but do 21 check your emails!

LIFE AT SELWYN DISCOUNTS NUS Extra/TOTUM Card - These are worth looking into but double check on UNIdays first to see if you can get the same discount there for free! Also many places will offer a student discount simply for showing your student I.D. Student Bank Accounts - If you haven’t already set up a student current account, it’s worth doing. Our best recommendation is Santander, which gives you a free 4-year 16-25 railcard, giving you a third off rail travel. If you already have a railcard which isn’t due to expire soon, then the HSBC account offers a free £80 Amazon giftcard and a year's Amazon Prime. Obviously, it’s important to look at all of the details to check you are eligible and consider the overdraft facilities offered. Also, it is possible to switch accounts after your first year to get more rewards. BURSARIES More information about bursaries which are funded by College and University available to domestic and EU students can be found on this website: http://www.cambridgestudents.cam.ac.uk/cambridgebursary/eligibility- and-further-information For overseas students, there is a deadline that college advises you to apply for a bursary by. If you miss it, or your financial situation changes, talk to your tutor. An application takes about 2-3 weeks to process after application. In general, if you have any financial issues, talk to your tutor or the senior tutor and they will be happy to help!! 23

LIFE AT SELWYN FOOD Selwyn Hall is where most students choose to eat on a daily basis. Hall usually has 3 main options (including a Vegetarian/Vegan meal) as well as a selection of potatoes, rice, and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, desserts and snacks on offer. Meals tailored to allergies or certain diets are available on request - just make sure the college is aware if this is the case. Hall also offers takeaway boxes if you don’t have time to sit and eat. You can also buy some non-food items such as toiletries and notepads from Hall. Food and drink in both Hall and the bar are paid for using your student card. You can see how much you have spent using this link: https://meals.sel.cam.ac.uk/ Monday-Friday Saturday & Sunday Breakfast 8am-9am ROUGH PRICES Brunch 11.30am- Main = £2.80 Lunch 12.30pm Side = 75p 12.30pm-1.30pm Salad = £1 Dinner Dinner Dessert = £1.20 6pm-7pm 6pm-7pm Takeaway box = 30p Snacks served all day Soft drinks = £1 Because there are plenty of options, there will almost always be something you like available and the food is pretty tasty! If nothing at Hall takes your fancy, (check menus here:http://selwynjcr.org/hall/menu/) you can cook in the gyps. In terms of shops, Co-op is just around the corner, there's a Sainsbury's in town and a large one in Eddington (a short bus ride away), and an Aldi about 15 minutes cycle away. COVID-19 The college are planning on having hall open so youl'll be 26 able to try the food!
COLLEGE FACILITIES FORMALS Formal hall is a three-course meal which takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30- 9pm during term time where you have to wear smart clothes (suit/dress or equivalent) and your college gown. This is a fun evening which students often go to for a birthday celebration, and you can invite friends from outside college. There is also a Christmas Formal which is a lovely way to celebrate 'Bridgemas'! Tickets are roughly £13 and can be bought at this link one week in advance: https://meals.sel.cam.ac.uk/. Wine can also be bought beforehand in the college bar. COLLEGE BAR Located in the corner of Old Court, the recently refurbished College Bar is a great place to sit and have a (cheap!) drink with friends. It’s open daily from 12pm-11pm for snacks, drinks and coffee. Hot food is available from 12pm-9pm too! Beware, you can pay using your uni card, which is very handy, but also makes it quite easy to lose track of what you’ve bought! You can also buy chocolate and other snacks here (there are also vending machines in the JCR!) JCR The facilities available here include: a TV, a pool table, a table- tennis table, a kitchenette, and sofas for you to chill out with friends. There is also another TV room next door with a Blu-ray player, an PS4, and a selection of games which you can help yourself to at any time. It is also often used for society meetings, as well as Sunday Tea, an initiative every Sunday which supplies free food in the JCR for when you need a break! COVID-19 We dont exactly know what access to these facilities/ events will look like but we'll 27 keep you updated!
COLLEGE FACILITIES LAUNDRY There are washing machines in Ann’s Court and K staircase of Cripps Court (the door after L staircase when you're walking towards Selwyn Old Court). There are plenty of machines, so there shouldn’t be a problem getting your washing done! A drying rack in your room is a good idea as well if you want to save money. If a machine has finished its cycle, usually no one will mind if you take the clothes out and place them carefully on the side, preferably in their laundry basket if they've left it there. The machines are operated through a company called circuit, so you can make an account on their app or collect a card from plodge. You can put money on your account via PayPal too! GYM The College has a gym, and although small it's completely free! It's located next to the bike sheds behind Cripps which makes it really handy. It has a few ergo machines, several cardio machines, one treadmill and some weights. You may need to book an induction – you will receive emails about this at the start of term. Should you want to use another gym there is one near Parker’s Piece or you can pay for the one in the Cambridge Sports Centre in West Cambridge. It was due to be extended over the summer but this has been delayed until summer 2021. COMPUTER ROOMS There are two computer rooms in Selwyn: one next to the JCR in Ann’s Court, and one upstairs in the library. COVID-19 We dont exactly know what access to these facilities/ events will look like but we'll 28 keep you updated!
COLLEGE FACILITIES LIBRARY The library is open from 7am-2am and is located between Old and Ann's Court. It is a cosy place to study, with blankets, beanbags, heaters and lots of desk space including a quiet room upstairs so there's somewhere for everyone. You use www.idiscover.lib.cam.ac.uk to search for books and check if & where they are in Selwyn library, but this will be explained in induction sessions. Selwyn is also a 5 minute walk from the University Library, and two minutes from all of the Sigdwick Libraries. Science and Social Science Libraries are in town. The college is in the process of building a new library and auditorium as well! If all goes to plan, this will hopefully be ready for you to use in 2021!! PRINTING To print in the library just follow these steps: 1. Install DS Print onto your laptop by following theinstructions on these links: https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/devices-networks- printing/ds- print/users/HowCanIprint/ds-printservice/ds- print-service-win (Windows) or https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/devices-networks- printing/ds- print/users/HowCanIprint/ds-printservice/ds- printmac (Mac). Alternatively you can print from the computers in the library. 2. You need printer credit as it costs 4p per side to print/photocopy and 1p per side to scan. To top up your balance go to https://www.ds.cam.ac.uk/mydsprint/ and add credit to your common balance. This means you can print from any printer in the university. 3. Once you have printer credit and have printed your document from your laptop/library computer log into the printer by scanning your CamCard. 4. Press release to print and scan/fax to scan (there are instructions for this part near the printer). 29
THE COLLEGE CHAPEL The Chapel is one of the most beautiful features of Selwyn. It provides a place for people to pray and reflect, but it’s also an incredibly welcoming space for people of all (or no) faiths to come and think or enjoy its calming atmosphere. Unless a service is taking place, silence is held between 12-1pm every day during Full Term. Sunday services are held every week and daily prayers are offered every morning on weekdays . Requests for prayer can be made known to the Dean of Chapel, or written on the intercessions board of the ante-chapel. There is a Freshers' service, Remembrance service and Carol Service which are all lovely events for the college community regardless of faith. SELWYN BOAT CLUB A little message from the Lower Boat Captains (LBCs) at Selwyn... Our role is to coach novice rowers new to the sport in first term We’ll be organising socials and taster sessions in freshers’ week, and can’t wait to meet some of you soon! Women’s LBCs (Erin, Mimi and Theo) Despite two of us having never rowed before Freshers’ Week we all agree that rowing has featured in some of our highlights of first year - either the races, socials (where you get to meet rowers from different colleges) or Boat Club Dinners. Whether you’re looking for a new sport to get involved with, a way to unwind and mix with new people, or you just want the stash (see photos), keep an eye out for our freshers’ events and we look forward to seeing you there! Men’s LBCs (Harry and Dom) Rowing is a great way to stay fit and meet some incredible people, from fellow freshers through to post-grads, as well as giving you access to some of the best socials in the college (including the termly Boat Club Dinner). It adds structure to your day and gives a much needed break from work, particularly in exam term. Having rowed last year we cannot recommend it enough, and what better time to start than with all the other first years at the start of Michaelmas? Coxing is another great way to get involved with Selwyn College Boat Club, and many people both row and cox so you definitely don’t have to pick between the two. The club is growing constantly and more boats enter races each term, with each crew needing its own cox, so if you are keen or have any questions contact our coxing representative, Hannah Logario (hjl52). 38
