The Newcastle community embraces and thrives upon the arts in all forms and Civic Theatre takes great pride and pleasure in providing audiences with access to high quality travelling and local productions. In 2019, we will host major Australian companies including Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and CIRCA and we will support new and exciting original works from two of our strong local performing arts companies. Ngarrama are back to perform Goori Dooki in full in 2019 and we welcome back Stray Dogs Theatre Co with their new work, Dali: Halucinogenic Toreador. Elixir featuring Kate Noonan will perform pieces from Gratitude and Grief, their collaboration setting incredible music to the poetry of national treasure Michael Leunig, while The Gospel According to Paul features one of Australia's favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, as Paul Keating. Our commitment to high quality programming for younger audiences continues with Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts adapted for the stage by shake & stir theatre co, Monkey Baa Theatre Company's Possum Magic, based on the classic book by Mem Fox and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre with another Roald Dahl classic story, The Twits. In 2019, we will mark 90 years since the opening of the Civic Theatre, which has been recognised by the Sydney Morning Herald as one of Australia's seven most beautiful theatres.
