Vol. 11 Issue 6 Oct. 15, 2004 ‘Saved by the Bell’s’ Mr. Belding to visit St. Bonaventure University D ennis Haskins, better known as Mr. Belding from “Saved by the Bell,” will discuss his interest in acting and how it became a career in a fun-filled, interactive performance at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, in St. Bonaventure University’s Reilly Center Arena. Doors will open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show. Public seating will be available in the red section, but students can access the floor and bleach- ers with their student ID. The arena will be set up with the stage facing the tunnel entrance, in a half-arena set-up for a more intimate experience. Haskins began taking acting classes in college when his baseball coach suggested that it would be an easy “A” to improve his grade point average. After taking the class, Haskins realized he enjoyed acting, and the rest is his- tory. Haskins’ first acting job was on the premiere episode of “Dukes of Hazard.” After that, he worked with a small theater group playing a role in the musical comedy “Angry House Wives.” Haskins eventually found his key role after a friend informed him of auditions for Disney’s “Good Morning Miss Bliss.” Producers were looking for someone to play the role of a high school principal. Haskins, a towering 6’6” was a perfect fit. Ironically, before the show even got off its feet, it was cancelled, but went on to become the ’90s hit series “Saved by the Bell.” The NBC series followed six high school students through their adventures and rela- tionships during their teen-age years. Haskins played the role of Principal Belding at Bayside High School in California. The event is sponsored by the Office of Student Activities. Wheelchair Dancers Headline St. Bona’s Celebration of Disability Awareness Nationally known stand-up and sit-down wheelchair dancers featured on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning and CNN will highlight St. Bonaventure University’s celebration of Disability Awareness Month in October. The Dancing Wheels performance will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the Rigas Family Theater of The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Admission is $8 for students, $15 for subscribers, and $18 for the general public. The month–long celebration will also feature a panel discussion on disabilities and the arts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Rigas Theater. The symposium will be moderated by Joseph LoSchaivo, executive director of The Quick Center for the Arts, with panelists Mary-Verdi Fletcher from Dancing Wheels and Susan Shie, a legally blind visual artist. Following the panel discussion a reception will follow in the muse- um atrium. Also planned is a performance by the percussion group “Beats Me,” made up of individuals with disabilities. The performance is planned for sometime near the end of October and will be held at the Hickey Dining Hall. Nancy Matthews, coordinator of Disability Support Services and Academic Intervention at the University, led the year-long planning of the events, which are open to on-campus and off-campus communities. “We are excited to celebrate the abilities of individuals with disabilities this October. Too frequently we focus on the disabling aspects of disability, not the wonderful abilities that so many of the individuals with disabilities possess,” said Matthews. This year’s sponsors include The Quick Center for the Arts, the Diversity Action Committee and the Teaching and Learning Center. The events will be held on both the Olean and Hilbert campuses, in hopes to extend disability awareness to those involved in The Buffalo Center who are not able to attend activities scheduled on the main campus. These activities are keeping in the Franciscan values of discovery, community and individual worth, according to Dr. Barbara Trolley, the coordinator of the student art contest as well as a member of the planning committee. Trolley hopes that everyone will set aside time to take part in at least one activity or event throughout the month of October. Trolley also went on to say, “It’s easy to get caught up in each day’s hectic schedule, and put off attending University programs. However, it is important to set aside time to renew our professional and personal growth, and examine our daily activities as they relate to the higher values and standards put forth by our University.” Additional Disability Awareness Activities Oct. 7, 2 p.m., Murphy Auditorium: “Kids on The Block,” an interactive puppet show about individuals with disabilities sponsored by People, Inc. Oct. 14, 7 p.m., Rigas Theater: “Disabilities and the Arts Panel Discussion.” Symposium moderated by Joseph LoSchaivo, executive director of the Quick Center for the Arts, with panelists Mary-Verdi Fletcher (Dancing Wheels) and Susan Shie (legally blind visual artist). Reception to follow in museum atrium. Oct. 15, 8 p.m., Rigas Theater: “Dancing Wheels.” National stand-up and sit-down wheelchair dancers featured on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning and CNN. Oct. 22: College Day for high school students with disabilities on campus.
