Street Party. ORGANIC FOOD WASTE COLLECTION TRIAL A WINNER In November last year, thousands converged on Rokeby Road for the Subiaco Christmas Night of Lights. What you might not have been aware of was that Subiaco was trialling organic food waste collection for the first time. Thanks to the team at Earthwise, more than 87 per cent of organic waste was diverted away from landfill and into rich natural compost. We’re looking forward to undertaking a similar operation at the upcoming Subiaco Street Party so make sure you look out for the organic waste bins. See right for further details. away, we save landfill space, raw materials and natural resources, such as energy and water, not to mention money. By taking your own shopping bags to the supermarket, avoiding disposable items and mending broken items, instead of throwing them away, you can assist in reducing your waste. 3. Reuse By reusing items, we decrease the volume of waste destined for landfill. Try to identify long-term uses for products and consider taking old books, magazines and toys to hospitals or doctors’ rooms, holding a garage sale for unwanted items and reusing containers, such as glass jars, for storage. 4. Recycle Products made from recycled materials use fewer natural resources and less energy than those made with raw materials. Try to purchase products with recycled content and consider organic recycling at home with a compost bin or worm farm. By recycling food scraps and garden waste, we save valuable landfill space and reduce methane gas emissions. 5. DispoSe Disposal is the final option for waste management, but the one that we currently practice the most. This is an increasingly serious environmental, social and economic issue in Australia, and brings about increased greenhouse gas emissions, incurs expensive set-up and management costs for local councils, and uses up scarce urban spaces for landfill. * The 2015–16 Census of Western Australian Local Government Waste and Recycling Services, p 8 ** Western Australian Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy - Consultation paper, 2017, p 14 DROP OFF YOUR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE FOR FREE Did you know that you can drop off domestic quantities of household hazardous waste items, such as cleaning chemicals, aerosols, paint and gas cylinders, free of charge at the JFR (Jim) McGeough Resource Recovery Facility in Shenton Park?
