India achieved independence from the British rule on August 15, 1947.
The independence came through the Indian Independence Act 1947, an Act
of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that partitioned BritishIndia into the two
new independent Dominions of the BritishCommonwealth: India and Pakistan.
India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, as a constitutional
monarchy. However, the country did not yet have a permanent constitution.
Instead, its laws were based on themodified colonial Government of India Act
1935.
On August 28, 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a
permanent constitution.
A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the
Assembly on November 4, 1947. The Assembly met, in sessions open topublic,
for 166 days (spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days) before
adopting the Constitution.
After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the
Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and
English) on January 24, 1950. Two days later, it came into effect throughout
the nation.
While India's Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the
Republic Day celebrates of coming into force of its constitution.
The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India onNovember
26, 1949, but was adopted on January 26, 1950, with a democratic
government system, completing the country's transition toward becoming an
independent republic. January 26th was selected because it was this day in 1930
when the Declaration of Indian Independence (PurnaSwaraj) was proclaimed by
the Indian National Congress.
In summary, India’s Republic Day honors the date on which the
Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950, replacing the
Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

                                                                                     8

SAMACHAR - JANUARY 2022 A PUBLICATION BY AND FOR THE GREATER DAYTON INDIAN COMMUNITY - India Club of Greater Dayton
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Namaste Dayton family!

When India Club started, the idea was to bring all Indians (of all ages and cultures) together to form a unified Indian
community. A community is a group of individuals connected to each other by one or more attribute(s), and the
element that links our Dayton community together is India. Just as the word sounds, it's a common unity of people.
India Club’s mission is ‘to sustain and preserve the heritage and culture of India’ in the hearts of our new generations.

We had a great Diwali program this year, and we’d like to thank our sponsors, volunteers, and participants to help
make it successful. India Club needs your continued support in building our strength, keeping India’s heritage alive,
broadening our cultural enrichment program, and bringing the community together as a whole again.

We would appreciate hearing from you about the programs we organize, and the programs you would like to see us
organize. Please give us your input and help us improve. With your encouragement, participation, and support, we can
have another eventful year.

Apart from the events announced already, India Club is very happy to introduce a new event series for the golden
jewels of our community.

Golden Jewels - This will be a monthly get-together held on the 4th Sunday of every month at the Om Shanti lobby.
This gathering will be for anyone of age 70 and above and lead by someone in the same group. The idea behind this
gathering is to make some new friends and share some fun skills with one another on a regular basis. For example,
some techie, but useful skills on digital devices, such as cell phones, computers, and tablets, or learning the basic steps
of garba, or some quick and easy cooking preparations, and so forth. We will also be looking for suggestions from the
same group for the future gatherings.

Stay tuned for more information!

India Club has started collaborating with other Indian non-profit organizations that share India Club’s mission. We
plan to reach out to more Indian non-profit organizations soon. Our aim is to build a stronger Indian community and
bring togetherness back into our community.

It was a sad year as we lost some important members of our community. The recent loss of Mrs. Indra Rajput still
weighs heavy on our hearts. She was a legend for India Club, so let’s remember her by this legacy she has brought to
life and nurtured with all her heart. Let’s carry forward what we have learned from our Indian pioneers like her, so
that our future generations can learn to do the same. That is the vision of India Club.

With New Year just around the corner, and the Executive Committee of 2022 is excited to welcome you all at the
Republic Day function on January 30th at the Om Shanti Hall. We hope to see you all there! Happy Holidays!!!

YOUTH CORNER
Hello friends!
My name is Namrata Haritashya and I will be the Youth Coordinator for the year 2022. As we all know, the last two
years were full of uncertainties due to pandemic, and we had to postpone many of our India Club events. I seethis year
as a ray of hope, and the light is visible from the end of the tunnel. India Club is ready to step into this year with lots
of enthusiasm and a positive outlook. Every year, we start our series of events with Republic Day that observes unity
in diversity, brings all of us together, and connects us as a community. Again, this year, we are ready to celebrate
Republic Day and all other events.
In January 2021, we could not organize the in-person youth competition, but we asked our youth to participate in
online art and essay activities, and surprisingly we got a tremendously positive response. Youth members are the ones
who are learning about our culture and will take it forward for the generations to come. Therefore, as the India Club
of Dayton, we believe in inspiring and encouraging youths in all their endeavors. By participating in India Club
activities, we make sure that they learn team building, leadership, and effective communication skills. At present, we
have two youth reps Pooja Shirahatti and Padma Doppalapudi, but for the year 2022, we have added four new
members: Amisha Kumar, Anuja Mangrulkar, Lahari Doppalapudi, and Vanshika Haritashya. As a youth team, we
look forward to helping the community in many more ways.
