It is wonderful to have you with us, especially now when community traditions are hard-fought. This year’s Sagebrush Soirée theme is “This Land is Your Land,” taken from Woody Guthrie’s iconic song. This theme helps us acknowledge and celebrate how much we care about the land and our deep connection to it. As the new executive director, it is truly an honor to serve the Sawtooth Society and lands we protect. Your willingness to pursue and even exceed our goals to preserve the land amidst today’s social and health challenges and significant environmental threats is heartwarming and reassuring. We could not do this work without your continuing support, and we are deeply grateful you are here. Thank you for giving generously and leading us in protecting, preserving, and enhancing this area that holds a special place in our hearts. I raise a glass and extend a toast to you and our shared endeavors through our Soirée. Let us ensure our land is full of healthy wildlife, dynamic forests, powerfully flowing rivers, and beautiful trails to explore. This land is our land. Let’s create a legacy together. Kathryn Grohusky Executive Director 3
Twenty-three years ago, a small group of collaborative and committed citizens made a real difference in land conservation. Bethine Church gathered like-minded influencers of the time and established the Sawtooth Society in 1997. The dedication of our founders continues as four of these visionaries, Bob Hayes (Emeritus), and Donna- Marie Hayes, Ted Pardoe, and Helen Pardoe, are currently serving our board with dedication. The vision of these founders, plus collaboration with many other individuals and partners, has created a tremendous tradition of powerful advocacy for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The vision and leadership of these committed stewards plus the hard work of so many volunteers and critical staff accomplished significant protections for the land we love, benefitting our community and future generations. Through your generosity and advocacy, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area is an incredible resource and refuge. It is truly the crown jewel of the Gem State. Thank you for joining us today and supporting our mission to Protect, Preserve and Enhance the SNRA, the land of endless skyways we all love. Hans Carstensen President, Board of Directors 5

About the Sawtooth Society The Sawtooth Society’s mission is focused exclusively on protecting, preserving, and enhancing the extraordinary qualities that make the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) one of the most physically magnificent and highly cherished natural areas of the entire United States. The Sawtooth Society’s vision is to work in concert with, but independently of the U.S. Forest Service staff responsible for the management of the 756,000 acre SNRA, as well as state and local governments and governmental agencies, private businesses, and individual property owners. Formed in 1997, the nonprofit and nonpartisan Sawtooth Society is the only organization dedicated exclusively to: • Preserve and protect the natural, scenic, historic, pastoral, and fish and wildlife values of the SNRA, to provide for the preservation and enhancement of the associated recreational values. • Preserve and enhance recreational, educational, interpretive, scientific, research, and experiential opportunities relating to the SNRA. • Increase public awareness, understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the SNRA and enhance public support for the preservation of the values listed above. • Raise, manage, and administer such funds as are necessary and appropriate to carry out these purposes. 21 Photo © James Bourret 28
ADVOCACY The Sawtooth Society mobilized policy-makers and the public to address threats facing the SNRA, and worked to improve the private lands program, initiated Sawtooth Vision 20/20, and helped develop the management plan for the two new Wilderness areas in the SNRA. PRESERVING OPEN SPACE The Society worked with the Administration and Congress to secure $17 million in federal funds for the purchase of conservation easements in the SNRA; published “What Works,” to clarify private land regulations and encourage less conspicuous development among private landowners. ENHANCING RECREATION AND SERVICES Since 2005, the Society has supported USFS efforts to build the Stanley to Redfish Lake trail; coordinated nearly $1 million in Goat License Plate grants for 220 enhancement projects to benefit the SNRA and all who live, work and recreate in it. FACILITATING STEWARDSHIP AND VOLUNTEERISM The Society coordinated nearly 12,000 hours of volunteerism, which resulted in clearing more than 3,000 trees from 450 miles of trails, providing stewardship education opportunities to more than 400 youth. 29
Fund-a-Trail Every year, trails suffer winter damage. So far this summer, our crews have already cleared 325 trees from 24 miles of trails. Volunteer trail repair costs nearly $600 per trail mile. Fund-a-Trail supports volunteer trail work, patrons receive a cool recognition lapel pin, and learn about the Society's fantastic program.
