LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR NEIGHBORS, My President’s letter comes to you one year after COVID-19 changed our world overnight. March 2020 seems like a lifetime ago and in North Rosedale Park we have been through much together while safely remaining at a distance from each other. We hold so many memories of the last year and I’m grateful that after a year of tremendous loss and reckoning, we were able to be each other’s bond. I chose to open this first edition of the 2021 Tattler with the words of Amanda Gorman from her celebrated poem, “The Hill We Climb.” Her hopeful embrace of the future we must create serves as a powerful north star for our work in North Rosedale Park. When she graced the podium on January 20 at the Inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, it was a moment not only for the country to pause and reflect on our collective purpose, but closer to home - in our neighborhood – we should view it as a poignant invitation for change and audacious possibilities. Her call to action - for us to rebuild, reconcile and recover - embodies our neighborhood agenda for how we will work in the year ahead. WELCOME NEW BOARD DIRECTORS TO THE NORTH ROSEDALE PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION In January, the neighborhood held its annual elections and on behalf of the North Rosedale Park Civic Association; I’m pleased to announce that four new members have joined the board of directors. Coming with strong backgrounds in business and education, the dynamic new NRPCA board members bring years of experience and leadership in our neighborhood, fresh new ideas, and the energy to help address the complex challenges we still face from the aftershocks of the pandemic. Please join me in welcoming Elizabeth Cooper, James Courtney, Theresa Glenn, and Eric Willingham to the board. The four new members join existing board members Beverly Frederick, Bill Frey, Karen Graham, Sarah Hulett, Chris Krupa, and James Martin. They will be joined by the 2021 board appointees approved at the February 7, board meeting: Marcia Bonner, Corresponding Secretary; JaNae Harrison, Recording Secretary; and Chelsea Neblett, Membership Secretary. We thank Adriane Henry, Billie Newsom and Ebonee Webb for their tremendous board service during 2020. Both Billie and Ebonee have agreed to continue as volunteers for NRPCA with Billie serving as the Interim Co-Building Manager (with Beverly Frederick) and Ebonee will again co-chair our annual Steak Roast (with James Courtney). A YEAR TO “REBUILD, RECONCILE, AND RECOVER” IN NORTH ROSEDALE PARK North Rosedale Park begins the new year at an inflection point as Detroit begins to grapple with its post-pandemic future. Our neighborhood continues to meet the moment in addressing the health impacts COVID-19, but now there is an impending economic reset ahead that NRPCA must be vigilant to address. The NRPCA Board of Directors will be organized around the following priorities in 2021: • Provide stronger governance and financial stewardship for the park and Community House. • Grow our membership and foster a sense of community. • Support actions that keep our neighborhood beautiful and safe during the pandemic. SPRING IS NOT CANCELED At its March 4, meeting the NRPCA voted to reopen the playground. A tremendous thank you to Amy Oakes for creating the beautiful new signage to inform visitors on the importance of maintaining vigilance against COVID-19, while using the playscapes. Our celebration of North Rosedale Park’s centennial year continues in 2021 thanks to the leadership of the North Rosedale Park ROSEDALE TATTLER MAR-APR 2021 3
