A Welcome Note From Your 2021-22 RGS PTC Board Committee Hurray for the start of another school year! This Fall, your Riverdale Parent Teacher Club (PTC) is happier and prouder than ever to continue its half century of volunteer work welcoming new and returning families to our Grade School community. Last year reinforced the incredible importance to our children — and us — of the classmates, teachers, staff, leaders, and caregivers in our district. Your PTC strove to creatively serve our school community under uncertain and distanced circumstances and proved that, with determination and ingenuity, there is nothing we can’t accomplish. This year, we look forward to resuming as much as possible the activities and events that make Riverdale such a special place. We do so, mindful that things can change and that we can and will model the flexibility and resilience we wish our children to learn. As always, we are guided by our mission “to enrich Riverdale’s K-8 education by curriculum activities, encouraging parent involvement, supporting student participation, and fostering communication to strengthen our community.” Like always, we look to you to help us along the way. Electronic communications remain more important than ever, so we are expanding into social media! Follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/riverdaleparentteacherclub/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/riverdaleptc/) for the most current information on what we’re doing. And please check your emails and the PTC website, www.riverdaleptc.org, for news about what we’re doing and what you can do to be involved. We are so glad to have you with us and look forward to supporting your family and our school together. PTC Overview What is the PTC? First established in 1969, the Riverdale Parent Teacher Club (PTC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that develops, implements, and funds curricular and extracurricular programs in support of students, faculty, and staff of the Riverdale School District; fosters parent involvement in the Riverdale School District; enhances community within the Riverdale School District; and shows appreciation for Riverdale School District faculty, administration and staff. Each Riverdale school is supported by the PTC, primarily through standing committees with responsibility for matters related to their respective schools. What’s the mission of the PTC’s Grade School Board Committee? We enrich Riverdale’s K- 8 education by enhancing curriculum activities, encouraging parent involvement, supporting student participation, and fostering communication to strengthen our community. Our main focus is to enrich the educational experience at RGS and historically we have done so through: ● Classroom Enrichment - art literacy, garden education, financial aid for books, field studies, lunch, grants for core subjects, special performances, author visits ● Teacher Support - classroom funds, room parents, monthly lunches, teacher appreciation week ● Extracurricular - community school, athletics support, extended care ● Community Building - back-to-school events, Carnival, Riverdale playgroup, Field Day, guest speakers, book fair, craft fair, movie nights, new family liaison, grade connectors, Auction (also our most important fundraising event of the year!) ● Grade School Support - lunch program coordination, weekly and quarterly newsletters, website updates, support for music programs, facilities improvements, equipment, technology, supplies Where does the PTC operating budget come from? As an all-volunteer organization, the Riverdale PTC has virtually no overhead expenses and we are proud to direct the funds we raise into the programs and events that support Riverdale students and staff and build our community. We raise funds by collecting fees from families at the start of the year and through several fundraising events. The most important of these events is the annual Spring Auction. To learn more about our finances, please visit: https://www.riverdaleptc.org/category/finance-rgs/. Are the PTC and the Riverdale School Foundation the same thing? Do I need to contribute to both? The Riverdale Foundation is independent of the PTC and was created to raise funds to bridge the gap between Oregon state funding and the actual cost of a Riverdale education. The funds raised through the Foundation’s annual campaign go directly to the district. The PTC is funded by our own fees and fundraising, and our funds are used to support other classroom and school programs and enrich our Riverdale community. Both organizations do critical work to support our schools and your contributions to both ensure that Riverdale schools have the resources they need to provide an excellent education to our kids. How do I find out the latest PTC news? What do I do if I have more questions? This year, the RGS PTC is trying something new: we’re moving our current events and announcements to social media. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram to learn what your RGS PTC has in store and is doing throughout the school year. We will continue to email our weekly “Parent Pack” newsletter too, but we know that families can be inundated by messages and/or lose them to folders. For less time-bounded items, please check out our website at www.riverdaleptc.org. And of course, please contact any of our board members directly. 3
Who is on the PTC Board? Parents of current RGS and RHS students serve as directors of the PTC. BACK TO SCHOOL TASKS PLEASE PAY YOUR ANNUAL RGS PTC FEE OF $50 PER STUDENT Every Fall, the RGS PTC asks families to pay a one-time back-to-school fee per student. This one-time per-student back-to-school PTC Fee is separate from any fees paid to the school. Much of this fee goes to programs that directly show community appreciation for our teachers. For a breakdown of the activities this fee has supported historically, see the chart below or visit https://www.riverdaleptc.org/category/finance-rgs/. Please pay the PTC Fee at https://www.riverdaleptc.org/rgs-annual-ptc-fee. Your fees in action! Follow Us on Social Media & Sign Up for the Parent Pack Newsletter The RGS PTC is now on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/riverdaleparentteacherclub/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/riverdaleptc/)! Each school’s PTC standing committee sends out a weekly e-newsletter called Parent Pack to highlight upcoming events in our community. Please subscribe and then watch for these emails as they remain the tried-and-true way to get up-to-date information about events, activities, volunteer opportunities, and other news. To make a submission, please provide a fully drafted entry along with a graphic to RGSParentPackSubmission@gmail.com by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday for inclusion in the Friday newsletter. For questions about Parent Pack or to get on the mailing list, please contact rgscommunications@riverdaleptc.org. 5
The PTC is able to host community-building events and provide numerous programs for the school only because of our amazing family volunteers! We ask that each family volunteer at least twice during the school year. Contact RGS Co-Vice Presidents Alexia Bounds and Nikki Brenneke at rgsvicepresident@riverdaleptc.org with any questions or ideas for volunteer opportunities. Please check the Parent Pack and the PTC website regularly for new volunteer needs and opportunities as our initiatives for the year get underway: https://www.riverdaleptc.org/volunteer-opportunities-at-rgs/. Volunteers are required to complete a volunteer screening, which is available online from the Verified Volunteers link at https://www.riverdaleptc.org/volunteer-opportunities and also complete liability waivers at https://www.riverdaleptc.org/liability-release-2020-2021/. School Supplies Thank you to new parent and School Supply Chair Ashley Eil for getting Riverdale families ready for school by leading this year’s PTC school supplies ordering program. PTC-Supported Student Programs Below you will find condensed information on some of our many programs for Riverdale students. For detailed information on all PTC-sponsored events and activities, please visit our website. Community School The Riverdale PTC’s Community School offers exciting extracurricular classes that are not funded by our district budget. Community School was established with the mission to enrich our children's education by exposing our students to interesting ideas and new concepts. Community School classes normally take place at the Grade School, so your PTC is exploring ways to continue connecting students with engaging learning opportunities from a distance. Some of our programs, like MarimaLab, are soliciting sign-ups directly and information is below. Please contact communityschool@riverdaleptc.org with questions and check Community School webpage for updates: https://www.riverdaleptc.org/category/community-school School Lunch Program 2021-22 Healthy Habits and the Riverdale PTC are pleased to be offering lunch again! Meals will be similar to last year: a rotating hot entree, some fan-favorite hot meals that are offered daily, sandwiches, salads, and snacks. During this challenging time, Healthy Habits and the school will continuously be working together to make sure all students have a safe eating environment and have adequate time to eat lunch. Lunch is ordered online at www.orgsonline.com. If you are new to lunch ordering, use 213RGSOROR for the school code. The full menu (including the rotating hot lunch option) is available on the Monthly Ordering Form. The monthly ordering period happens between the 1 st and 20th days of an “ordering month” (we combine some months to avoid ordering periods conflicting with holidays or school closures). September ordering will stay open until August 25th to make sure everyone has enough time to order. If you are in a pinch or missed the monthly ordering period, you can always use the Limited Menu ordering form. Orders can be placed up until the night before for a few of the hot menu items, sandwiches, salads, and snacks. All payments are due by the 25th of each month. Additionally, did you know that PTC coordinates the lunch volunteers? We need many volunteers each day and we are always looking for more help. In fact, this year, because of Covid, the only in-school volunteer opportunity will be through the lunch program. Please consider grabbing a friend and spending your lunch with our kids! Go to https://www.riverdaleptc.org/volunteer-opportunities-at-rgs today to sign up for lunch service. 8
If there are any questions, please contact Shelly Pascoe at shellypascoe@icloud.com (for menu or ingredient information) or Anita Scarlett at xagsx@hotmail.com (for ordering support). We look forward to seeing all of your students soon! Art Literacy The RGS Art Literacy program provides students the opportunity to learn about individual artists and to do art projects inspired by those artists. Sessions are facilitated by parent volunteers and take place each trimester. The PTC coordinates the program and funds the supplies used by our budding artists. If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to get involved in the classroom, consider becoming an art lit volunteer! No art skills or knowledge is required; all information necessary is provided during program training. Contact the RGS Vice President(s) at rgsvicepresident@riverdaleptc.org for more information. 7th/8th Grade Activities & Promotion Parents of 7th and 8th grade students work with the PTC to provide age-appropriate social activities for our older RGS students. Activities typically include Friday Night Dancing School, a Winter Formal dance, and year-end promotion activities for 8th graders. In addition, the Leadership class traditionally organizes a Fall dance and the Field Day dance.
