Ridgeback Tails Issue 3 Website: www.rrwt.org Oct 2019 Welcome Dear Ridgeback Lover, It’s time to turn thoughts to winter and maybe Christmas again, after the really wonderful year that the Welfare Trust has had. Twenty five years on from our formal establishment, we have a lot to be thankful for. We seem to average out at rehoming 30 or so Ridgebacks a year, while supporting something like 25 humans each week with helpful advice and encouragement. What’s New? Without doubt we have been affected by the changes to the Midlands & Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback Club’s Support and Rescue organisation, and we were very sorry to learn of the resignation of several of their trustees. We at the Welfare Trust have picked up a number of sad cases of Rescue that might not otherwise have come our way, and we think others will follow. How- ever, we mustn’t forget that our remit is countrywide, and we are equally greatly helped by our countrywide support. Remember, our motto is: EVERYBODY DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE Christmas, calendars & cards . . . Our unique RRWT calendar for 2020 has just arrived from the printers and is now on sale. It’s the same handy A4 format as usual, with a page for each month with plenty of space against each date for your notes. We’ve already marked in the Bank Holidays for you and, of course, all the Trust’s events - because we’d love for you to join us. £14.00 inc. P&P Christmas Cards- our wonderful Christmas Cards, this year with new designs in time for Christmas Sold in packs of 6 for £5.99 with every penny of the proceeds going directly to benefit Ridgeback Welfare. Activities . . . Our Chieveley Rally in July proved very popular, and we are glad that for the first time it was formally shared with members of the Southern Rhodesian Ridgeback Association, who put on an excellent show of RR-themed activities. We hope this will become a yearly event. The weather proved excellent, food likewise, and Trustees think some 80 people attended with their accompanying children and canines. Early September saw us at our usual fun venue, the Rosehill Jamboree where Maggie has her kennels, this time with good input from the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Great Britain. Again well over 70 people enjoyed an excellent programme of fun-and-games and Maggie’s luscious Awaiting the start of the Jamboree chilli lunch. In addition WT representatives attended the shows put on by RRC of GB, that Club’s AGM, and the AGMs of the M & N RRC and the SRRA. We are grateful for the Clubs’ financial help, but more particularly for the opportunities they give us to publicise Junior Handlers demonstrate the need for awareness of the need for Rescue. their skills Award of the Fairman Memorial . . . The Fairman Memorial trophy was kindly donated by Bob Fairman, after his beloved Ridgeback Elsa, was killed whilst defending the family against armed intruders. It is awarded by the Trust annually to the supporter, who in the opinion of the Trustees has significantly helped the Trust in supporting Ridgebacks in need. This year we were proud to award the Trophy to Clare Kapma-Saunders. Many of you will know Clare through her jams and alcoholic beverages that she makes and sells, the proceeds of which are donated to the Clare being awarded the Fairman Trust. A big thank you to Clare for her work and support. . . . Memorial trophy for her contribution in A well deserved winner What’s Next? The Calendar moves on. (NOTE to anyone who may have missed out, this year for the first time we are not holding our Christmas party in early December, so don’t go hopefully to Shipton!) We are delighted to have been invited to the M & N’s Open Show in aid of Res- cue on Saturday 30th November. Early in the New Year Trustees will be attending the AGMs of the M & N RRC and the RRC of GB. And early in March comes Crufts Show, yet again, and we will as usual be manning our ringside stand – see you there perhaps? There’s nowhere like it for picking up all the news! .
