Section C: faq HOW SHOULD I PACK? 1. ORGANIZE Organized packing makes unloading and settling in easier. 2. PACK SMART Have your belongings in manageable boxes or suit- cases, so that they can be transferred from your vehicle to your residence room safely and securely. 3. LABEL Label all of your belongings with marker on masking tape. Make sure to include your name and resi- dence building and room number so your belong- ings aren’t misplaced. 4. BE PREPARED Be prepared to get your belongings into your room. Bring a dolly or hand-truck as there may be a ways to go and/or stairs! Note: Each resident will only be allowed 2 helpers (preferably of the same social circle ). REMEMBER JUST 2! 5. CHECK THE WEATHER Make sure to plan for the weather! If it looks like rain bring a tarp or big sheet of plastic to protect your belongings. Please take a look at our Residence Move In Day Information webpage to be up-to-date with all important Admis- sions Information, and check out our detailed list of what to bring and what not to bring for Traditional, Semi-Suite, Suite Style and Townhouse residences. Please note: If you plan on having mail or packages delivered to residence, please DO NOT send anything before Monday, September 6, 2021 as we do not have the space to store items prior to your arrival. Section b: faq WHAT APPLIANCES AND FURNISHINGS AM I ALLOWED? All Brock University Residence rooms are already fully furnished with a twin bed, a dresser, a desk and chair, closet or wardrobe, shelving, and garbage bins. Townhouse Style residences also have furnished living rooms and kitchens equipped with a sofa, a chair, tables, and eating area. If you're thinking about bringing extra furnishings and/or appliances you MUST read our Allowable Appliances and Allowable Furnishings documents. Due to your room and unit being fully furnished there is limited space for extra furnishings and appliances, and any- thing that is brought in must be made of metal or plastic. Why? To help reduce fire safety hazards and potential pest problems. Everyone wants to be on the safe side!
Section b: faq RESIDENCE LINENS AND COLDEX PROGRAMS The Department of Residences has partnered with two companies that will help make your transi- tion to living in residence more smoothly. Residence Linens and Coldex are two companies that supplies bedroom linens and rental mini fridges. For Townhouse and Suite Style Residences (Village, Quarry View and the Lofts (Building 9), Coldex also has small freezers (5 cubic feet) availa- ble for rent. Residence Linens provides and delivers various linens directly to Brock University . *note you are not required to purchase these services, but are recommended to make your transi- tion to university simpler! If you choose to bring your own linen and mini fridge, please consult the allowable furnishings and appliances section of this document as there are limitations on items you can bring into residence. For more information about Residence Linens, visit https://residencelinens.com/ For more information about Coldex Mini Fridge and Freezer Rentals, visit https:// coldexrents.com/ When ordering, ensure you select Brock University as your school and give your correct building and room number you are staying in. If you do not know your residence room number, please check your Brock Office 365 email as rooming assignments have been sent out. As always, you can contact the Department of Residences at res@brocku.ca if you have any questions.
Section b: faq CONTENT INSURANCE ALL STUDENTS LIVING IN RESIDENCE ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE CONTENT INSURANCE (Either personal or through Brock University’s Department of Residences) It is important to know that you are responsible for insuring your own belongings. Brock University is NOT responsible or liable (directly or indirectly) for your belongings should they become damaged or if they are stolen. Content insurance is insurance that pays for damage to, or loss of, an individual’s possessions while they are located within that individual’s home. Usually, your parent/guardian can add coverage to their home insurance plan. Brock University provides an insurance program that will be charged to all residence students, except to those who provide proof of rea- sonable coverage. The final date students can opt out of the university content insurance is Wednesday September 15th, 2021. When opting out, you must provide the Department of Residences proof that you have insurance through your parent/guardian. For more information, please visit https://brocku.ca/residence/important-information/rules-and- regulations/insurance/
Section b: faq CAN I BRING MY PET? As stated in the Residence Community Standards, which you agreed to when you applied to residence and will agree to again once you move in, PETS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN RESIDENCE, not even for a visit! What does the Residence Community Standards say exactly? “Pets in Residence” (Level 2 Infraction) Pets are not allowed in residence (not even as visitors to your residence). Only non-dangerous fish in aquariums no larger than 5 gallons are permitted. If a student chooses to have such a tank, they are responsible for ensuring its maintenance. No debris from the tank (including rocks/gravel) may be put down any drain in residence. [Please note: Certified service animals are permitted in residence while wearing identifying clothing (for non-residents) or with proper medical/supporting documenta- tion and prior permission from the Manager, Residence Admissions and Administration (for resi- dents)]. Charges for repairs or cleaning due to having a pet in residence will apply.” This excerpt was taken from the Facilities Infraction Categories section of the Residence Community Standards at https://brocku.ca/residence/infraction-levels/#pets
Section b: faq ACCESSIBILITY ON CAMPUS Accommodations in Vallee, Earp, Village and Lowenberger are available for students with accessibility needs. There are rooms available for specific accessibility needs, such as: visual fire alarms, door openers, accessi- ble washrooms and showers etc. However, we are only able to make accommodations for students with these needs who have told us in the online application process (there was a specific section in your applica- tion that you needed to fill out for this purpose). If you have accessibility needs pertaining to your resi- dence stay, and have not already contacted us, please e-mail the Department of Residences at res@brocku.ca as soon as possible so we can help make your residence stay better. In addition to letting us know, it is recommended that you register with Student Accessibility Services in or- der to receive academic accommodations if necessary. Section b: faq RESIDENCE COMMUNITY STANDARDS (RCS) The residence community is a unique environment in which we aim to balance residents’ needs as well as their academic successes during the students’ time in residence. For this purpose, Brock University’s Department of Residences has created a document entitled Residence Community Standards (RCS) which defines unacceptable behavior, outlines the levels and types of infractions, and describes in detail both the manner in which infractions are enforced and the kinds of sanctions applied. Residents are ex- pected to read, understand and abide by the information contained in this document. Each year we re- view the Residence Community Standards to best reflect our expectations for residents at Brock Univer- sity. Please review the updated Residence Community Standards at https://brocku.ca/residence/ important-information/community-standards/ You will also receive an updated copy in your move-in package when you move in. Please note: When you electronically submitted your application to residence using your my.brocku.ca account, you agreed to the following terms and conditions: For more information regarding the Residence Community Standards, please see the Residence Handbook. Section c: arriving on campus ARRIVING ON CAMPUS • When you arrive on campus at your scheduled date/time, look for a color coded sign with your building/residence name on it at one of the two main en- trances to campus. • Follow these signs and they will take you through the internal Brock roads to the unloading zone closest to your residence. • Staff will be along the route at key points to help guide you. • At your unloading zone, have your move- in parking permit visible on the dash of your car (this is e-mailed to your Brock account in late August). Ensure your driver knows which room in residence you will be staying in. • Leave the driver with the vehicle to follow staff direction while you (the student) go get your keys from your registration table. Only the student should go to the Registration table. • Have in your hand picture ID, your Informed Consent form, and your proof of vaccination when you go to the registration table (you will get Brock card on move-in). You will be given your keys, asked to sign that you have received the proper keys, and asked to sign the Residence Agreement (the terms and conditions of living in residence). If you are under 18 years old when you applied to Residence, you will need a parent/guardian's signature and so they can attend the table as well. • Take your keys and unload your stuff to your room/unit. • You’ll have a brief time to unload near the building and after the car is unloaded, the driver will move the car to the PARKING LOT where there is a 2 HOUR Maximum stay. There will be several signs di- recting them. • The driver can meet up with you at your room, where hopefully you’ll have already begun to unpack and make it feel like home! Helpers can stay for 2 HOURS ONLY!! • You may want to leave your room door open, so that you can meet house mates. However, don’t leave your door propped unless you are present in your room, as that is a fire hazard, as well as a safety issue for your belongings! • Masks must be worn by all helpers inside the room/unit.
