`` Celebration of World Environment Day, 2021 ACTIVITY – 1: ORGANIZED AN EXPERT LECTURE AT GCPC-ENVIS CENTRE INVITING SHRI HEMANT SUTHAR, (RETD.) DY. CONSERVATOR OF FOREST (D.C.F.) (CLASS-I) ON 4TH JUNE, 2021 Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre – ENVIS Resource Partner celebrated World Environment Day, 2021 at GCPC-ENVIS Centre, Gandhinagar under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS and by inviting Shri Hemant Suthar, (Retd.) Dy. Conservator of Forest (D.C.F.) (Class-I), Gujarat Forest Department as a special guest on the occasion on 4th June, 2021. The inauguration started with presenting a memento to our special guest Shri Hemant Suthar and with a brief introduction of Shri Hemant Suthar by Ms. Priyanka Joshi, Information Officer, GCPC-ENVIS and with Saraswati Vandana. `` She mentioned about the various initiatives taken by Shri Hemant Suthar during his tenure, which inclusive of conducting of radio talks at All India Radio, Aakashvani, Ahmedabad, compilation of various books and articles in various newspapers. He has closely worked with various other reputed organizations such as SPIPA, GCERT, Anand Agricultural University and other state level institutes. He has also delivered various lectures on wildlife, nature education, climate change, global warming and other environment and related issues and compiled various publications on the same. He has also delivered many lectures to forest subordinates, agriculture officer, public prosecutors, professors and so on. The session continued with discussion by Shri Hemant Suthar on establishment of World Environment Day in 1972 with objective to create awareness towards the environmental conservation and minimizing the increasing environmental issues. He mentioned World Environment Day inspires us in changing consumption patterns as well in modifying international environmental policies. He then discussed about the theme of this year’s world environment day i.e., ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ mentioning about the ‘Current Status of Ecosystem and its Restoration’. He then stress upon the ‘The Bonn Challenge’, which is a global goal to bring 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested landscapes into restoration by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. It also focuses on greening environment by growing more trees, greening cities, changing diets, cleaning up rivers and coasts, etc. GUJARAT CLEANER PRODUCTION CENTRE – ENVIS RP 2
`` Speaking on the occasion he gave an example of Philippines where the country has passed a law for environmental management in which every student has to mandatorily plant 10 trees in order to get their graduation degree. The bill known as ‘Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act’. Shri Suthar then discussed about the Ecosystem – types, structure, components, problems associated with ecosystem degradation and process for its restoration by planting trees, preventing pollution, sustainable lifestyle and so on. He gave various examples mentioning about the Trees Per Head as per UN report, 2018 Trees Per Head in Various Countries i.e.,: Canada: 8953 Russia: 4461 USA: 716 China: 102, India:28 including the example of Kabirwad which is banyan tree located on small river island in Narmada river in Bharuch District, Gujarat. The tree and place is associated with 15th century mystic-poet kabir. The tree’s canopy was so extensive it sheltered 7000 men. He concluded mentioning that today; our global footprint is about one and half time the Earth's total capacity to provide renewable and non-renewable resources to humanity. If nothing changes, in 35 years, with an increasing population that could reach 9.6 billion by 2050, we will need almost three planets to sustain our ways of living. The session concluded with vote of thanks from Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS and thanking Shri Hemant Suthar for his wonderful lecture. `` ACTIVITY – 2: WEBINAR ON INTEGRATING ECOSYSTEM INTO SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR DR. S. & S.S. GHANDHY GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING COLLEGE, SURAT ON 5TH JUNE, 2021 GCPC-ENVIS RP & Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Dr. S. & S.S. Ghandhy Government Engineering College, Surat jointly organized webinar on Integrating Ecosystem into Sustainable Industrial Development on 5 th June, 2021. The dignitaries present during the webinar were Dr. V.D. Dhiman, Principal, DGGEC, Surat, Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS including 130 participants inclusive of professors and students from DGGEC, Surat. The programme started with welcome address from Dr. V.D. Dhiman, Principal, DGGEC and with a brief introduction of Dr. Bharat Jain by Prof. D.J. Mehta, Asst. Prof. CED, DGGEC, Surat. `` The programme continued with discussion on ‘Integrating Ecosystem into Sustainable Industrial Development’ by Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC & Coordinator, GCPC-ENVIS. He discussed the inception of World Environment Day, Environment Perspective in India since ancient times worshiping different elements of nature as a God followed by discussion on ecosystem, causes and evidence of ecosystem damage. He then stressed upon the various tools for ecosystem restoration giving example of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Study which is formulated to meet the requirement of the project to minimize the impact of the upcoming structure on the environment. Dr. Jain elaborated on Environment Protection Act, 1986, environmental management plan, ecological restoration and its challenges including the activities need to be performed by human beings for ecological restoration. He gave various examples of successful restoration projects in India giving example of Yamuna Biodiversity Park a collaborative effort of Delhi Development Authority and Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE), University of Delhi, Mangrove restoration in Andhra Pradesh and Chilka Lake of Odisha. `` He then stressed upon the need of Sustainable Development and various strategies to achieve sustainable development. He continued discussing the scenario of industrialization in the state of Gujarat discussing about the robust industrial infrastructure facilities in the state and mega projects such as Dholera, DMIC, PCPIR and so on. He continued discussing on major product clusters in the state inclusive of Engineering, Chemical, Textile, Mineral Based Industries, Agro and Food Processing, Plastic, Paper and others which describes the state of Gujarat as a manufacturing hub and growth engine of the country. Dr. Jain mentioned, Gujarat being the leading industrialized state in the country is also leading in terms of effluent treatment capacity with most number of Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs), Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs), Deep Sea Disposal Facilities hence as per 2018 10 out of 100 polluted industrial areas of Gujarat is under Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index (CEPI) identified by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Hence it is realized that, to overcome the environmental issues, treatment of pollution and waste is not the only solution as it is cost intensive and so we need to be proactive realizing the need of pollution prevention (P2), the concept of “Cleaner Production” (CP) was introduced by UNEP and UNIDO in the year 1992 and realizing the potential of Cleaner Production in the state of Gujarat, Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre (GCPC) was established in the year 1998 by the Department of Industries and Mines, Government of Gujarat with technical support of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). `` Dr. Jain then stressed upon the tools and methodology to implement CP followed by case studies of CP implementation in different industrial sectors inclusive of chemical, agrochemical, cement, textile, dairy, etc. followed by discussion on Green Chemistry and Green Technology. Dr. Jain elaborated the initiatives taken by Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre in promoting the concept of Cleaner Production instituting Gujarat State Cleaner Production Award (GCPA) for industries with support of Forests and Environment Department, Government of Gujarat, including cleaner production as a subject in course curriculum of B.E. and M.E. Environment in colleges of Gujarat and compiling book on Cleaner Production and its applications. He then stressed upon the Eco-Industrial Parks (EIP) Development integrating common environment infrastructure facilities within the estates. Dr. Jain continued discussing the ‘Green Building’ concept which eliminates the negative impact of construction on environment through its design and structure giving examples of various green buildings across the globe inclusive of Godrej Green Business Centre located at Hyderabad which has solar system into it, natural lighting, rooftop garden, zero water discharge systems and so on. `` Dr. Bharat Jain concluded discussing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressed by GCPC-ENVIS RP through its various activities including the future scenario of water and energy. The programme concluded with Q&A and with vote of thanks from Prof. D.J. Mehta, Asst. Prof. CED, DGGEC, Surat. GUJARAT CLEANER PRODUCTION CENTRE – ENVIS RP 12
`` ACTIVITY – 3: GCPC-ENVIS RP with support of Shree P.K. Chaudhari Mahila Arts College, Gandhinagar, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Gandhinagar and National Service Scheme (NSS) jointly organized essay competition for two categories Class 8 to 12 and UG & PG Students Under this GCPC-ENVIS RP invited participants from schools and colleges of Gandhinagar, Gujarat to submit essay on Ecosystem Restoration in English, Hindi and Gujarati language in which Category -1 (Class 8 to 12 students) have to submit their essay in (Minimum 1500 – Maximum 2000 words) and Category -2 (UG & PG students) have to submit their essay in (Minimum 2000 – Maximum 2500 words) respectively. Prizes for the first three winners in each category I and II will receive cash prize, 25 participants in merit from both the category will get appreciation E-certificate and kit bag from GCPC-ENVIS RP. Remaining participants will get E-certificate from GCPC-ENVIS RP. The winners will be declared on GCPC-ENVIS RP website:- www.gcpcenvis.nic.in .
