Spotlight on our new programming! Breaking isolation and providing nourishment and socialization throughout the pandemic Our rebrand and program expansion represents an opportunity to expand and diversify the input and perspectives we have and improve our ability to adapt the programs and services we provide to the entire community that we serve. We are pleased to introduce you to some of our new programing that reflect our commitment to reaching a broader population of older adults throughout Portland. NOURISHING ASIAN ELDERS Asian Food Pantry for low-income elders The Asian Food Pantry was started in April 2020 as a Covid-19 rapid response initiative by request of the Asian Health and Service Center to get food to Asian seniors in Central Portland. Previously, these seniors would take buses to AHSC for the weekly meal program, and also to shop at ethnic stores in the Jade District (SE 82nd), as there are no culturally-specific grocery stores in Downtown and NW Portland. The Asian Food Pantry, in partnership with Asian Health and Services Center, Clay Street Table, the Chinese American Citizens Alliance and other partners serves 180+ Asian household (280 elderly residents of Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese heritage with 360+ bags of grocery) each month. These elders would not have access to items like tofu, bean curds, fish sauce, and Asian vegetables like bok choy, napa cabbage, etc. without this community response program. BRINGING ART EDUCATION, LIFE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT & RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES TO UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES Enhanced Resident Services (formerly The Giving Tree) Our Enhanced Resident Services provide residents of low-income and affordable housing communities (currently seven buildings) with direct support, resource referrals, community building activities and programs focusing on art, education and recreation resulting in an improved quality of life for the individual resident and for the residential community in which they reside. In so doing, we encourage and support each participant in realizing their fullest potential. Throughout the pandemic, our enhanced resident services team shifted quickly to support downtown residents with food support, wraparound case management, housing stabilization, rental assistance, PPE and vaccine appointments. At a time when many services were on pause, our Enhanced Resident Services stepped in to provide essential resources and support. 4 Community for Positive Aging | Hollywood Senior Center

CFPA: New & returning volunteer opportunities IN THE PAST YEAR AND HALF there has been a lot of change for everyone. Many of us have to learn to tackle things in entirely new ways or have had to learn to be a lot more patient as we’ve been isolated from our normal routines. Our amazing volunteer community is no expectation. During the closure of the HSC building, many volunteers were able to help our organization in different ways, and many others have been waiting for opportunities to return or for conditions to be safer. With plans to reopen Hollywood Senior Center in September, we are looking forward to welcoming back so many volunteers to help out at the center once again! And with the exciting expansion of our organization and increased services through Enhanced Resident Services, the Asian Food Pantry, and more, we also look forward to offering new opportunities for volunteers to support our work and mission as we empower people to achieve happy, healthy aging. Are you eager to return to a previous volunteer role? With the reopening of the Hollywood Senior Center, we will need lots of volunteers on-site to help us welcome back participants and make sure everyone has a great experience. For those of you who have been waiting patiently to return, we are really looking forward to seeing your faces in person again! While we will definitely be full of activity, please note that not all programs may be immediately operating like they were in the past as we continue to navigate changing best practices during the pandemic. If your previous role is still on hold, I am happy to work with you to see if there is a current opportunity that would be a good fit for you in the interim. Are you interested in helping in a new role? Look for lots of new opportunities to help support the entire Community for Positive Aging team! Volunteers can help facilitate programming like arts and crafts or coffee and conversation at downtown buildings for individuals served by our Enhanced Resident Services Team. Volunteers are already a huge part of the success of the Asian Food Pantry downtown and with plans to expand this program in the future we’ll be looking for more volunteer support as well. This is an incredibly fulfilling volunteer opportunity to help serve our Asian elders. Do you need to continue to stay on hiatus? We also recognize that many individuals need to continue to physically distance themselves at this time to ensure their health and safety. All CFPA volunteers are welcome to continue to stay on hiatus if needed. I am also happy to work with you to explore remote volunteer options if that is something you are interested in. Or if circumstances have changed, and you no longer wish to serve as a volunteer, that is ok too. We hope you will join us again as a participant! Reach out to let us know what works best for you! Whatever category above you may fall into, we want to hear from you. Especially if you are eager to return to a volunteer role you had in the past I’d love to connect with you this month to discuss. Please contact me at julieann.barowski@communityfpa.org or call me at 503.288.8303 ext 109 to give me an update. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! —Julie Ann Interested in volunteering?
