REFLEXOLOGY DIPLOMA COURSE aim of course To enable candidates to add Reflexology Treatments to their existing treatments and obtain a Diploma approved by BABTAC. entry level A recognised body therapy qualification, or a minimum CIBTAC Anatomy & Physiology Diploma or equivalent. SUBJECTS TO BE STUDIED generic areas of study G2 Health & Hygiene G3 Skin Structure and Function G4 Skin Diseases G7 Business Studies G8 Salon Procedures G9 Nutrition other subjects: History of Reflexology Philosophy of Complementary Therapies Anatomy & Physiology of Hands and Feet Anatomy & Physiology Revision Theory of Reflexology Mapping of the feet Pathology Client Care and Consultation Treatment routine Aftercare Case Studies MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENT 150 HOURS This must include a minimum of 100 hours contact (50% of which must be working within a commercial salon environment) and 50 hours of additional study. EXAMINATIONS The dates will be issued annually by the Examining Board. THEORY 45 minutes multiple choice paper PRACTICAL 1 ½ hours. 16 Case histories to be presented to the examiner. EXAM FEE To be issued annually by the Examination Board. This course is designed on a flexible time basis, enabling many part-time students to qualify who would not be able to attend college on a full time basis. CIBTAC © 2 E22
HISTORY OF REFLEXOLOGY History, theory, definition and development of reflexology up to the present day The holistic approach to Reflexology Reflexology used in the promotion of health and well being Theory of how Reflexology works Therapeutic and physiological effects on the mind and body PHILOSOPHY OF COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES An understanding of the Holistic nature of Complementary Therapies. An awareness of 6 other Natural Therapies plus current views and research in holistic medicine, e.g. Shiatsu Aromatherapy Acupuncture etc. Awareness of voluntary and statutory support systems within the community. ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY OF HANDS AND FEET Bones of the arm and lower leg (Radius and Ulna, Tarsals, Metatarsals and Phalanges, Tibia + Fibula). Collective names only of the bones of the hand and foot (Carpals, Metacarpals and Phalanges). Superficial muscles of the hand and arm: Flexor and extensor group of the hand and arm Thenar and hypothenar muscles Blood supply to the hand and foot: Radial and ulnar artery Peroneal and tibial artery Superficial muscles of the foot and lower leg: Tibialis anterior Extensor group Peroneals Gastrocnemius Soleus Flexor group (deep) ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY REVISION A general revision of the function of all systems affected by Reflexology with particular reference to: Skin Nervous System Internal Organs Blood Circulation Lymphatic System Elimination Process CIBTAC © 3 E22
THEORY OF REFLEXOLOGY Zones of the body – longitudinal and transverse Cross reflexes – Referral zones Understanding zone therapy Aims / Benefits of the treatment Mapping of the reflex areas Differences between Holistic and Symptomatic Approach Pregnancy Contra-indications MAPPING OF THE FEET Mapping of the feet must be carried out using appropriate reference charts. PATHOLOGY A knowledge of the systems and prognosis of commonly encountered conditions including: Asthma Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Angina Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Arthritis Stress Related Disorders Diabetes Mellitus Migrane Eczema Drugs, Addiction Epilepsy Allergies High & low blood pressure Depression Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Eating Disorders Myalgic Encephalonyelitis (ME) Psoriasis Pre Menstrual Tension (PMT) Menopause CLIENT CARE AND CONSULTATION Preparation of the treatment room and couch / chair Ensuring client’s comfort, privacy, warmth, etc. Obtaining information to include medical history, present medications being taken, reason for treatment, noting and acting upon any apparent contra-indications. AFTERCARE The appropriate aftercare / homecare advice for the reflexology treatment ensuring suitability to clients needs and recommendation as to where the client may obtain further professional advice if appropriate. REFLEXOLOGY PRACTICAL WORK Observation and assessment of the feet Relaxation techniques and movements Support / hold procedures Compression techniques Location of reflexes Appropriate pressure Back up reflexes CASE STUDIES The student must complete four case studies, comprising four treatments for each client, totalling sixteen treatments. The case studies must include a range of conditions, ages and lifestyles. Case studies are not to be carried out on other students within the group. Please refer to the separate Case Study Pack for tutor and student guidelines, this can be obtained from the CIBTAC office. CIBTAC © 5 E22
REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT PRACTICAL EXAMINATION Time allowed 1 ½ hours guide for colleges / examiners 1. Detailed Consultation. A consultation card must be completed by the candidates with the client at the start of the examination. A detailed record should be made of the client’s medical history, present medications being taken, contra-indications apparent and reasons for treatment. All clients to be allocated by the examiner. 2. Preparation of Working Area. The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the working area is satisfactorily prepared prior to the treatment being undertaken. 3. Preparation and Care of the Client. The candidate is responsible for the suitable preparation of the client prior to the treatment being undertaken. 4. Treatment Movements. The examiner will be looking at the candidates posture along with their technique and pressure. 5. Aftercare and Advice. The candidate must give the client suitable aftercare following the treatment as well as advising on the follow up treatments. Results / findings and aftercare recommendations should also be recorded on the client’s card. 6. Hygiene. The candidate must demonstrate high standards of hygiene before, during and after treatment to negate the possibility of cross infection. 7. Personal Appearance and Deportment. The candidates should present a totally professional image to the client and wear suitable clothes to meet this criterion. 8. Oral Questions. The examiner will ask the candidate oral questions relative to the treatment and aftercare. 9. Case Studies. Must be graded by the tutor and be available to the examiner on arrival. These will be verified by the examiner at the end of the examination. Accommodation must be available for up to 2 hours. CIBTAC © 6 E22

CASE HISTORIES guidelines to consider when taking case histories 1. A detailed consultation should be carried out but the Client’s name and address should be kept separately on the consent form. 2. Client’s must be aware of all possible contra-indications. 3. Client’s signature must be on all consultation sheets. 4. All the enclosed forms should be completed for each case study and each treatment must be recorded. 5. If the treatment is being altered at all, please explain and justify this. 6. Additional information can be included in the homecare advice. 7. All treatments to be validated by the tutor. 8.
