CL Cleveland 28 Jun – 2 Aug Canaipa Mudlines Art and environment Opening Event 6.30pm Friday 26 June Floor Talk and Morning Tea 10am Sunday 28 June Canaipa Mudlines began in 2016 with a small collective of Southern Moreton Bay Island artists seeking ways of connecting their creative practices with the island ecology. Based on Canaipa (Russell) Island, the project has developed as both established and emerging artists from the island and beyond make regular site excursions to create mostly ephemeral works in response to the places and qualities they encounter. Working in this way has contributed to both surprising developments in their individual practices and highlighting the often overlooked richness of the island environment. Known as the Migaloo Press Artists Collective they have been meeting and collaborating with other artists, bird watchers and environmentally concerned people around Moreton Bay. CA Capalaba 18 Jul – 1 Sep Placemaking Sarah Sculley and Lara Furst Floor Talk and Light Lunch 12noon Thursday 23 July Placemaking centres on creating a space for youth to communicate issues that are relevant to them and to the wider community. Urban artist Sarah Sculley uses the human form, typography and colour to create bold works inspired by personal events, emotional pitfalls and the need to find the positive in every situation. This exhibition brings her bright work together with the photography of Lara Furst to create a place that explores the universal challenges experienced by Redlands Coast youth and their counterparts in the Philippines. An exhibition held in conjunction with International Youth Day 2020. Image: Sarah Sculley and Lara Furst, Placemaking landscape (detail) 2019, mixed media. 26 Courtesy of the artists. 27
CL Cleveland 9 Aug – 6 Sep Port Damien O’Mara Opening Event 6.30pm Friday 7 August Floor Talk and Morning Tea 10am Sunday 9 August The Port series by Damien O’Mara presents several large, industrial landscape photographs of the Port of Brisbane. The images are shot with a consistent method and composition, in reference to the objective methodology used by late-modern, industrial photographers like Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Andreas Gursky. O’Mara’s exhibition challenges this aesthetic through a unique combination of objective method and abstraction. While the images display symmetry and grid-like composition, they also contain conflicting elements such as vivid, digital colour and abstracted form. CL Cleveland 9 Aug – 6 Sep Contested Landscapes Dennis McCart Opening Event 6.30pm Friday 7 August Floor Talk and Morning Tea 10am Sunday 9 August Dennis McCart’s paintings in Contested Landscapes are derived from urban fringe sites that are both visually compelling and charged with implications of use, development and ownership. These sites of abandonment are often uninhabited for long periods of time – they are the city’s unkempt wilderness. His artworks are both a response to and an interpretation of the anthropogenic climate change we are living in. They also express McCart’s anxiety about the condition of landscape and nature in our world today. Image: Dennis McCart, Some kind of nature (detail) 2019, oil on linen on 30 hardboard. CA Capalaba 5 Sep – 13 Oct Reasonable & Necessary Prints and artist books by Artel Artists Floor Talk and Light Lunch 12noon Thursday 17 September Artel, the creative studio of CPL – Choice, Passion, Life, is located in Redcliffe and provides the necessary tools, space, and instruction to support its artists to creatively express themselves as a dynamic artistic movement. The exhibition title Reasonable & Necessary is taken from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) criteria. With the uncertainty surrounding the NDIS, the Artel studio is not just reasonable and necessary but essential, providing real career prospects for artists. Works in the exhibition captivate on many levels. They have been grouped by the exhibition Curator, Lynne Seear, into eight themes: Places, People, Family, Voices, Sailing, Driving, Mark Making and Artist Books. An exhibition held in conjunction with Queensland Disability Action Week 2020. Reasonable & Necessary: prints and artist books by Artel Artists is an initiative of Museums & Galleries Queensland in partnership with CPL and curated by Lynne Seear. This project has been supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland; the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory governments; and the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. Throughout her career, Belfrage has maintained a vibrant studio glass practice and is known for her distinctive artworks in which complex patterns of fine glass lines trace her forms. Inspired by the repetitious patterns found in nature and the woven lines of textiles, Belfrage is particularly drawn to the layered rhythms that mark growth, change and the passing of time in the natural world. JamFactory Icon: Clare Belfrage: A Measure of Time is a JamFactory touring exhibition. CL Cleveland 13 Sep – 18 Oct Presence of Place Catherine Parker Opening Event 6.30pm Friday 11 September Floor Talk and Morning Tea 10am Sunday 20 September In her exhibition Presence of Place, Catherine Parker celebrates the beauty in both the urban and natural landscape, choosing to honour, rather than divide the two. Exploring different regions through her paintings on wood and canvas, Parker takes heart that within any landscape there are always mysterious elements. For her, a sense of being watched, an invisible presence perhaps that keeps the balance in check. Image: Catherine Parker, Ocean narratives 2018, synthetic polymer paint on marine ply.
