    Lottozero is an
    international
    research and
    networking center
    for textile design,
    art and culture in
    Prato, Italy.

    LOTTOZERO
LOTTOZERO textile laboratories - Social Report 2020
6 Social Report 2020

Lottozero operates both as a creative hub and as
a consultancy studio. Our headquarters occupy
a total of 400-sqm in a former warehouse in the
Macrolottozero area of Prato and are divided
    into a gallery/exhibition area, a shared studio
space/coworking and an open fab-lab for textile
    production, experimentation and research.

The work we do in our CREATIVE HUB is aimed
primarily at creative people operating in textile
and fashion, it responds to their need for space,
their need for comparison with other creators
and access to information which is not available
online. We also provide feedback, tutorship and
the possibility to live and exhibit in this
    environment.

We support the development of emerging talents
and brands through scouting and residencies in
our headquarters and by facilitating the
exchange between them and the traditional
companies of our district. We initiate an
    exchange between traditional textile companies,
by showing them new means for creative
innovation, and designers, by putting them in
contact with companies who have the necessary
technical know-how to produce their creations.
We are strongly present online using social
media to network and publish information about
the textile world that surrounds us and inspires
    us.

    MISSION

Our mission is to create a fertile environment for
textile research and experimentation in design
and art, and an international base for networking
    in the textile sector.

    VALUES

Lottozero cannot ignore the values that permeate
every single project: collective vision, inclusion,
    sharing, quality, openness, economic and
    environmental sustainability, and a non-profit
    mentality.

The project is part of a global vision on the
importance of quality and quality production in
all areas, which aims to stimulate the use of
good design, the use of shared tools and the
return to old craftsmanship, for example by
    blending it with digital culture.

Lottozero sees sustainability as the opposite of a
trend. In fact we see it as a long-term mentality
that should pervade all aspects of a company’s
life, resulting in a radical (re)evaluation of its
objectives and values and inducing structural
    changes.

Lottozero is a cooperative, by ideological choice,
non-profit, open to all, and over time, it foresees
the growth of the number of members who will
    want to share our mission.

     Our Activities

     THE TEXTILE LABORATORY

The textile workshop in Lottozero is a practical
workspace open to the public and intended for
     technical and artistic experimentation, the
development of prototypes and projects, the
production of limited editions and unique pieces,
     textile training/workshops, the production of
works of art and as an operational space to
     support creative residencies.

It is equipped with machinery for
     experimentation and research on textile
materials, through craft, manual and industrial
techniques that are typical of the Italian textile
     sector:

     -Sewing: 4 Juki CP-170 industrial machines, 2
Brother domestic machines, 1 domestic Singer
     serger overlock machine.

-Dyeing: Dye kitchen equipped with double sink,
electric plates, a variety of pots, brushes and
     spatulas, steaming column for fixing the color;
you can also have access to color cookbooks,
which collect information on classic dyes and
experiments, a useful guide tool from which to

     create your own fabric.

-Silk screen printing: 2x6 m professional table
ideal for printing in repeat, supported by a tank
for washing screens and an exposition set with
UV-light to personalize screens. It is possible to
create a wide range of prints, of different sizes,
types and colors thanks to the variety of silk
screens, inks and fabric bases available in the
     laboratory.

     -Sublimatic printing: Siser ONE professional
press with which you can apply transferable
prints and foils to any fabric.

-Knitwear: different types of manual, industrial
     double-bed and hobby jacquard knitting
machines that work with perforated cards of
different fineness’s. We also have models for
perforated cards and white cards that allow you
to develop custom cards and patterns.

-Weaving: small frames for beginners, a large 8
     heddle loom, a tapestry loom.

     -Embroidery: digital embroidery machine Tajima
Writer Plus, with which it is possible to create
personalized digital embroidery from a drawing,
a photo or any other inspiration, thanks to the
use of Pulse software that transforms shapes,

     Sustainability

CAMBIAMODA, FROM FAST FASHION TO A
     SUSTAINABLE AND TRANSPARENT TEXTILE
     SUPPLY CHAIN
     07/2019 – 12/2020

Since July 2019 Lottozero has been partner of the
Cambiamoda project, realized with the support
of the Italian Agency for Cooperation
Development and the Mani Tese association, in
collaboration with Istituto Oikos and other major
     partners. Through education and awareness
raising actions, the initiative aims to trigger a
change in lifestyle, consumption and production
in the fast fashion sector, spreading and
     promoting more responsible and sustainable
models that respect workers’ rights and the
     environment.

For this project Lottozero has created a
Sustainable design thinking workshop for design
students at Italian universities and a special
edition of Fashion Revolution Fair, scheduled in
     two locations: Manifattura Tabacchi, Florence,
and Base, Milan. Due to the health crisis, the
     events were temporarily suspended and
integrated with an online version, proposed
during Fashion Revolution Week, in April 2020.

     FASHION REVOLUTION FAIR
     2017 – 2020

Since 2017 Lottozero has participated in the
     Fashion Revolution Week with Fashion
Revolution Fair, a two-day event halfway
between showroom and fair, in which the main
actors were: the best stockists in the Prato area,
who exhibited their most particular and quality
goods and local and international tailors /
designers, who worked live in the space and
exhibited some of their unique pieces.

The aim of the project is to bring the public
closer to Italian production, the value of the work
and of handmade products, unique pieces and
more generally the value of quality in textile
     production and fashion.

A second objective is to create new synergies
between fashion professionals and the public by
encouraging exchange and growth. In addition,
we intend to draw attention to the theme of “who
made my clothes”, the main theme of the Fashion
     Revolution initiative.

     CIRCULAR WOOL
     01/2017 – 2020

Circular Wool is an on-going research project in
collaboration with R.S. Ricerca e Servizi.
The project aims to transform a waste material,
wool from local dairy sheep farms, which is
disposed of at high environmental and economic
costs, into a circular textile raw material.

The wool recovered and processed in the Prato
textile district thus becomes a material for textile
use to be applied in furnishing fabrics and
interior products such as curtains, carpets and
     panels.

The project operates through partnerships with
host-brands and the design and production of
circular and innovative products. The added
value is given through a high level of design
applied to the product that helps to convey the
concept of circularity and the short supply chain
approach of the raw material, in communication
and storytelling of the final product.

The Kunsthalle is an exhibition space, gallery/
showroom which is open to the public to
facilitate access to textile culture and to the
     results of research and experimentation
developed by artists and designers within
     Lottozero.

In the contemporary art field, the activities
developed by Lottozero, both inside and outside
the Kunsthalle’s spaces, explore the multiple
connections between art and textile materials,
with the presence of an internal curator who
follows the realization of residencies and

     GENEROUS IMAGES UNABLE TO REACH
     (30.10.2018 – 02.06.2019)

An exhibition project that Luca Vanello, an
Italian-Slovenian artist living in Berlin, developed
at Lottozero throughout a long period of
collaboration. The exhibition was the result of a
variety of periods of residence that Luca Vanello
spent at Lottozero over a period of almost two
years, carrying out research on the regeneration
process of carded wool in Prato, with the
     technical collaboration of various textile
companies in the district. The beginning of the
residency dates back to March 2017, when the
artist spent an initial phase of study and
research in Prato. On this occasion, an event
open to the public was organized (30.03.2017) in
which the artist presented his artistic research
and met some figures of the textile district, with
whom he initiated important collaborations for
     the success of his work.

Selected within Nesxt Festival 2018, the project
was previewed in Turin at the Project Room

up again in the Kunsthalle of Lottozero, on the
occasion of the event “Make Lottozero” (9.11 -
13.1.2019). On March 21st 2019 the exhibition had
a third stop at Museion’s Casa Atelier in Bolzano
     (22.03 - 02.06.2019); here the project was
presented under the title Tired Eyes Dislike the
     Young.

The site-specific nature of Luca Vanello’s
research led him to modify works and layouts in
relation to the exhibition spaces, each time
different. During the inauguration there was a
performative action, repeated in the three
     different venues.

During the period in which the exhibition was set
up in the Kunsthalle, guided tours with the
curator were organized for different sections of
the public. During the period of the exhibition at
     the Atelier House, Museion’s educational
department also organised guided tours and
     educational activities.

     MAKE LOTTOZERO (10.11.2018)

For the inaugural event of the textile workshop at
Lottozero, the artist and sound artist Andrea
Borghi was invited to present the first studio of a
sound performance, Tistre, the result of a three-
day residency held in Lottozero between
September and October 2018. The artist
experimented with supports of a textile nature to
produce records with yarns and fabrics in the
shape and size of an Lp, which were then played
     with a prepared turntable.

     MUSEION ATELIER HOUSE (2019)

In 2019 Lottozero created a series of exhibition
projects for Museion, the museum of modern
and contemporary art in Bolzano. Lottozero was
invited to curate the artistic program for the
whole year 2019, and proposed a cycle of three
     site-specific installations curated by Alessandra
Tempesti, each created by a different artist and
united by the presence of the textile element.
After Luca Vanello with Tired Eyes Dislike the
Young (21.03 - 2.06.2019), it was the turn of
Norwegian artist Margrethe Kolstad Brekke, with
the project How to Implement Utopia (6.06 -
25.08.2019). On the day after the opening, the
artist met the public during a talk with the
     curator and biologist Sara Casagrande.
Anna M. Rose, an American artist living in
Florence, closed the series with the exhibition
     Homo Bulla (5.09 - 27.10.2019). On June 6th the
artist held an Artist Talk, meeting the public

     exhibition.

During the residency the following activities
     were organized:

     – “Creations with tapestry”, workshop curated
     by Cristina Mariani (8.10)
     – “Introduction to weaving technique”, workshop
     by Cristina Mariani (15.10)

     RESIDENCIES

The artistic residencies, for research and
production of works and interventions related to
textiles, are the area in which the potential of a
space like Lottozero in the field of contemporary
art is most evident. Their success is due to the
technical skills of the team, the textile laboratory
and the vast and constantly growing network of
contacts built over the years with companies in
the textile district functioning as a real
     laboratory spread throughout the territory.

     Community

     DESIGNER

Since 2014 Lottozero has built a solid community
of designers with whom it is constantly in
contact and involved in projects of an
     experimental, commercial and educational
     nature.

We do research, visit universities, trade fairs,
research centers and creative hubs throughout
     Europe, offering networking opportunities and
active participation. This allows us to update,
     cultivate relationships and exchange knowledge
with each other, thus contributing to innovate
     and spread the textile culture.

To date, our community has over 300
     international fashion, textile and interior
     designers.
A fundamental part of our work with the
community of designers is to support them in
their growth and to promote their work. We have
purposely created an online store, a hybrid
space between a gallery and a real shop for the
display of projects, ideas and objects that we
consider valuable and innovative, from an
aesthetic, conceptual and process point of view.

     PARTNERS AND COLLABORATIONS

We create synergies to embark on a lasting path
and forge bonds over time that can give value
and benefit to both parties. We seek partners
and sponsors that share our same values; great
attention to quality, product innovation and
     specialized know-how.

Partners provide support in the form of
knowledge, contacts, time and availability to
help our center achieve certain pre-established
goals in the short, medium or long term.

Each partner and sponsor of Lottozero/texile
laboratories believes in the Lottozero mission
and is committed to contributing in a concrete
manner through technical support, supply of
materials, machinery, furniture or tools and
     providing their time and know-how.

These stakeholders become part of the Lottozero
network in an active, constructive and long-
     lasting way.
