SKYCITY HAMILTON COMMUNITY TRUST RECIPIENTS 2012 The SKYCITY Hamilton Community Trust is proud to support 168 community groups in 2012 with a total distribution of $630,725.42 ORGANISATION DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT GRANT AWARDED Altrusa International Club Altrusa International Club of Hamilton is a group of professional women who work together to 2,020.00 of Hamilton serve the community. The Club organises the annual 'Young Citizens of the Year' awards that recognise the achievements of intermediate schools in Hamilton, and the 'Youth Awards' that recognise the colleges. Nominees are selected for a range of criteria, including community work, attitude, sportsmanship and scholastic improvement. Funding has been approved to assist with the costs associated with this event including certificates, prize vouchers, photography and catering. Alzheimers Waikato Alzheimers Waikato is the only provider of services to people affected by dementia and their 2,083.00 family/carers. Alzheimers and dementia affects memory loss, cognition, orientation and communication, impacting many aspects of everyday life. The Trust encourages clients to wear a Wandatrak pendant - a necklace with a tracking device inside that enables people to be located quickly if they wander/get lost, which is a common problem. Funding has been approved to purchase a second set of receiver units to help these searches. Anamata Charitable Trust Anamata Charitable Trust operates a small private tertiary establishment Te Pu Wananga o 1,000.00 Anamata in the eastern Bay of Plenty, providing responsive education for 19 years. Funding has been approved to assist with venue hire for a two-day ‘Maori Health Coexisting Disorders’ summit that will allow Maori health practitioners working in the mental health/ addictions sectors to meet and discuss their work with coexisting disorder clients (who suffer from substance addictions and mental health problems simultaneously). Aotearoa Maori Tennis Association Aotearoa Maori Tennis Association was established in 1926 to promote the game of tennis to 1,700.00 Maori whānau - with an emphasis on youth, primarily through the NZ Maori Lawn Tennis Championships. Funding has been awarded to cover venue hire and tennis balls for the 86th NZ Maori Lawn Tennis Championships. Arts for Health Community Trust Arts for Health Community Trust promotes arts and crafts programmes in the community for 2,000.00 people who are disadvantaged by illness or injury. The Trust has operated for 25 years, and uses volunteer support to cater to 1,300 clients per year. Arts sessions are also provided at the new Cancer Lodge. Funding has been approved towards salaries of a Facilitator, Coordinator and Office Administrator so that arts programmes can be provided across Waikato. Assistance Dogs NZ Assistance Dogs NZ was established to provide trained dogs to assist children disabled through 1,000.00 Autism and other disabilities, helping them to achieve more independent living, mobility and companionship. Funding has been approved to purchase equipment needed for client assessments and training. Autism NZ Inc Waikato Autism NZ Inc Waikato is one of 16 branches of Autism NZ and supports an estimated 4,000 1,000.00 people in the Waikato region living with Autism. The biggest cause of death amongst children with Autism is drowning. Emergency situations often escalate because of the communication needs of people with Autism. At present no formal training is provided to Emergency Services in Waikato to mitigate these risks. Funding has been approved to deliver parent training and Emergency Response Education courses for the emergency response sector. Balloons Over Waikato Trust Balloons over Waikato Trust organises ‘Balloons over Waikato’, a free ballooning festival that is 10,000.00 considered the sport’s premier event in New Zealand. It attracts over 130,000 visitors over a 5-day festival. The 2013 event will include mass flying, a parade, the Nightglow at Waikato University and other community events. Barnados New Zealand Barnados is New Zealand’s largest children’s charity, focusing on education, support and 3,000.00 advocacy to allow children to reach full potential. Their primary services are childcare, and support/advice through ‘0800 What’s Up’ - which provides free professional telephone counselling for 5-18 year olds, 365 days a year. The calls are handled by paid, trained counsellors and advice on issues ranging from bullying to suicide. Barnados provide the option of speaking to the same counsellor for each call. Last year, over 350,000 calls were made but capacity is only available to answer 40% of calls received. Funding has been approved to contribute towards service costs for Waikato calls. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Taupo Big Brothers Big Sisters of Taupo is an international mentoring organisation operating 3,000.00 internationally since 1904 and in New Zealand since 1997. The Taupo branch has been running for two years, formed in response to community need expressed through the District Council and Youth Networks. It provides trained mentors who are matched with youth aged 8-13 that face challenges at home/school. Funding has been awarded to contribute towards Coordinator and Administrator salaries. Birthright Waikato Birthright Waikato exists to provide support to one-parent families. Funding has been approved 1,000.00 Te Whanautanga Tika to assist with counsellor wages to provide affordable, professional counselling for children of one-parent families, supporting them through grief and loss when their parent’s relationship breaks down. This year the organisation has supported 60 young people and they would like to extend their service from 10 hrs/week to 25 hrs/week to meet demand. Cambridge Autumn Festival Trust Cambridge Autumn Festival Trust hold an annual festival in Cambridge with free recreational, 3,000.00 cultural, sporting and artistic events. The 2013 festival is planned to include concerts, theatre, dance, children’s entertainment and a Main Street Carnival that will have street performers, music and local school/groups participating. Funds have been awarded to provide street entertainers. Cambridge BMX Club Cambridge BMX Club encourages families to participate in sport together and coaches riders 4,000.00 towards fitness and competition success. The Club has received funding towards the purchase of a storage shed that will be used to store tools, start lights and trailers. Cambridge Community Agencies Cambridge Community Agencies Network Trust is a social service agency that aims to support 2,000.00 Network Trust the wellbeing of people in Cambridge through programmes including counselling, family violence intervention, budgeting, food bank and adult literacy. The Trust reaches 2,000 people annually. Assistance has been provided for the Trust's three qualified Counsellors, Social Worker and Manager to access external supervision. This monthly supervision helps to ensure competent, ethical and safe practice by the staff who work with vulnerable people suffering anxiety, depression, violence and addiction. Cambridge Lifeskills Trust Cambridge Lifeskills Trust provide a free counselling service for troubled and at risk primary 3,000.00 aged children and where appropriate they are also involved with their families. Last year 135 children were counselled. Funding has been approved to contribute towards counsellor's wages to continue providing this much needed help for children in the area. Child Matters Child Matters is New Zealand’s only specialist Child Protection Agency and provides training and 5,000.00 education programmes nationally to over 18,000 adults. Funding has been approved to assist with programme costs and operational overheads for two 5-day Child Protection programmes in Hamilton. Participants will learn how to recognise, intervene and stop abuse. Child Matters Child Matters runs 'Buddy Day' - a public participation event to raise awareness of child abuse 5,000.00 in the community. The event consists of high profile people looking after cardboard cut-outs of children (buddies) for the day as a way to communicate key messages about child safety. People are encouraged to sign the buddy and agree to stand against child abuse. Last year 180 buddies were given out, and this year Child Matters wants to build on that by engaging schools and businesses. Funding has been approved to contribute towards event costs for Buddy Day in 2013. Citizens Advice Bureau Te Awamutu Citizens Advice Bureau Te Awamutu provides services that help people to know and 5,085.00 understand their rights and obligations, how to use this information to get the best outcomes, providing people with the confidence and support they need to take action and work for positive social change within communities and the wider society. In 2011/12, the Bureau handled 3,150 enquiries. They are open 32.5 hours per week and have 26 volunteers who work on a roster. Most of the volunteers would work on average 20 hours per month. Funding has been approved for the 2012/2013 training budget that keeps volunteers fully trained and aware of new and up coming changes in New Zealand law. Coastguard Tauranga Tauranga Coastguard is the second largest unit in New Zealand, after Auckland, in terms of 10,000.00 callouts and assistance provided to the community. The unit operates two vessels, a radio watch service and a number of VHF radio channels. They also provide educational classes to the public. All of this is managed 24hrs/365 days by over 70 volunteers, who deal with 180 assistance calls and 30,000 radio calls, logging 14,000 hours of service annually. Funding has been approved to contribute to the upgrade of radio equipment and radio room. Room upgrades are underway to create a multi-purpose incident centre. Colville Social Services Colville Social Service Charitable Trust runs a drop-in centre for people in the far north of the 1,706.00 Charitable Trust Coromandel. The centre offers youth programmes, sports, events, adult education, a book exchange and information regarding local social services. Funding has been approved to support their ongoing youth ‘Fishing Project’ with administration and a fishing guide. The project supports 28 children, who work with a fishing guide in small groups. Coromandel Independent The Coromandel Independent Living Trust supports the wellbeing of the upper Coromandel 1,820.00 Living Trust Peninsula communities. This work includes life-long learning, hospital transport and housing for the elderly, disabled and low-income. The Trust would like to expand its Whitianga ‘Artist in the Making’ programme to reach the over-60s. The programme will provide weekly 3-hr sessions for 10 people who are isolated/disabled/ill and in need of support, covering activities like mosaics, knitting and weaving. Funding has been approved for resources for this programme. Coromandel Players The Coromandel Players promote the enjoyment of theatre and performing arts to Coromandel 1,000.00 Town and outlying communities. The group aims to minimise entrance costs to its performances which provide enjoyment to approximately 300 people for each performance. Funding has been approved to assist with rental costs. Creative Waikato Creative Waikato supports the development of and participation in the arts in Waikato. The 4,990.00 Trust would like to create an affordable, accessible boutique shared creative space in the centre of Hamilton for performance art and art exhibitions. The Trust will lease the building for three years as its HQ and open it up for community use. Funding has been approved for the purchase of chairs. Diabetes NZ Waikato Incorporated Diabetes NZ Waikato supports people affected by diabetes, their family and caregivers - this is 5,000.00 done through support groups and health professionals. Funding has been approved to run an adventure camp in January for 30 children aged 8-12 with Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes, who require multiple daily injections or insulin pump infusion therapy. The camp will be supported by health professionals and night staff. For many, the camp is the first time that children will be away from the full-time care of their parents/caregivers, helping to increase the children’s confidence and self-reliance whilst providing caregiver respite. Eastlink Cricket Club Incorporated Eastlink Cricket Club promotes cricket at all levels in the community, with particular emphasis 2,000.00 on developing junior/youth cricket. The Club seeks funding for a training nets facility to be erected at Lugton Park, Hamilton East. The nets will be used to support training of approximately 100 players. Funding has been approved towards the supply and installation of astroturf. Endometriosis Waikato Endometriosis Waikato promotes awareness of endometriosis and supports women and 3,485.00 teenage girls affected through quality information and education. Funding has been approved to assist with salary and rent costs. Epilepsy NZ Epilepsy NZ (Waikato/Coromandel Branch) promotes the welfare and interests of people with 825.00 Waikato/Coromandel Branch epilepsy in the region. Funding has been approved to contribute towards telecommunication costs to allow their Field Officers to support people with epilepsy in the community. Family and Financial Solutions Trust Family and Financial Solutions Trust supports families to become financially independent. Their 1,000.00 focus is on reducing family violence that is caused by financial stress, and they currently work with 95 clients. Funding has been approved for the bulk printing of stationery that will be used by the Trust in their promotions. Foundation for Youth Development Foundation for Youth Development Western Bay of Plenty (FYDWBP) provides the FYD Kiwi 5,000.00 Western BOP Can programme, developing children 7-9 years into confident, positive young leaders. Working across nine Western Bay of Plenty Schools, Kiwi Can is delivered to 2,400 children every week. The programme is delivered by two leaders who are trained to plan lessons and community activities with learning outcomes. Programme outcomes include a demonstrable reduction in stand-downs. Funding has been awarded to contribute towards Kiwi Can Leader and Coordinator salaries. Fraser High School Cadet Unit Fraser High School Cadet Unit provides an 11-month training programme across the four school 1,875.00 terms. The programme includes training camps and outdoor experiences. Funding has been approved for the 25 cadets and leaders to attend a search and rescue course. Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity’s aim is to meet the growing need for affordable housing. They do this 10,000.00 (Central North Island) Ltd through a home-building scheme, an affordable home-repair scheme and education programmes. Habitat are seeking funding to try a new scheme - repairing homes for removal that have been unsold for several years, and utilising the firm that owns the home to complete the relocation to Habitat land. Funding has been approved to assist with the cost of repairing and relocating a two-bedroom home in Horotiu to a site in Hamilton. Hamilton BMX Club Hamilton BMX Club has received funding towards seating on the track perimeter to complete 2,000.00 their racetrack alterations. Hamilton Children and Families Trust Hamilton Children and Families Trust exists to support families and children to take part in 1,000.00 positive activities together, largely through the delivery of events. The Trust has received funding towards costs to run a Children’s Day celebration event, consolidating four small community events into one larger scale experience for 5,000 families. Hamilton Chinese Golden Age Hamilton Chinese Golden Age Society exists to support older people to adapt to and actively 1,000.00 Society participate in New Zealand life. Funding has been approved to assist with costs associated with an English class for 60 of their members. Hamilton Citizens’ Band The Hamilton Citizens Band exists to provide opportunities to people of all ages to play music 5,899.00 Incorporated and to provide tuition to learners in conjunction with schools. The band has 90 members and they play at civic and community events. Funding has been approved to purchase a bass drum. Hamilton City Christmas Parade The Hamilton City Christmas Parade Trust produces the annual Hamilton Christmas 4,000.00 Charitable Trust Parade. The Parade consists of around 100 floats and encourages community involvement and celebration. Funding has been approved for character costumes for the Parade. Hamilton City Christmas Parade Hamilton City Christmas Parade Trust provides Christmas events in Hamilton. Funding has 4,000.00 Charitable Trust been approved to assist with the installation of the annual Christmas tree at Garden Place. Hamilton Civic Choir Hamilton Civic Choir exists to perform high quality music and encourage young musicians and 1,000.00 singers. The Choir has received funding to assist with music hire for a concert to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. Hamilton Community Arts Council Hamilton Community Arts Council exists to promote the arts in Hamilton. They also organise 8,000.00 the Hamilton Fringe Festival, delivered over 17 days across Hamilton. It includes innovative creative work, giving artists the opportunity to showcase their work as well as giving the community opportunity to participate in more challenging arts entertainment. Funding has been approved to assist with venue hire for this festival. Hamilton Gardens Summer Hamilton Gardens Summer Festival Foundation supports the Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival - a 10,000.00 Festival Foundation two-week arts event that aims to make the arts accessible and affordable for everyone. Funding has been approved to contribute towards costs associated with the 16th annual festival in February. Hamilton Group Riding Hamilton Group Riding for the Disabled aim to instil confidence, independence and life skills to 10,000.00 for the Disabled improve the wellbeing of people with special needs. The group provide therapeutic horse riding, which uniquely improves balance, coordination, muscle development, confidence, trust and communication. It is particularly effective for people with challenging behaviour to improve personal control. Funding has been awarded to contribute towards the installation of a cover over the riding arena at the Waikato Equestrian Centre. Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust provides migrant and refugee settlement support in the 2,000.00 Hamilton and wider Waikato region. Funding has been approved to provide interpretation support to individuals with language barriers that are not accessing the support services that they need. Hamilton Operatic Society Hamilton Operatic Society is one of New Zealand’s oldest theatre companies and produces 4,000.00 musical theatre, concerts and community events that are accessible to the community. Funding has been approved to assist with costumes and laundering for the production of Hairspray at Founders Theatre, Hamilton. Hamilton Performing Arts Trust Hamilton Performing Arts Trust trading as FULLHOUSE has been producing dynamic shows, 5,000.00 since 2008. FULLHOUSE has a dynamic collection of actors, directors and visionaries gathering together to stage high quality live theatre in the Waikato. The programme for 2013 has now been set to produce four premiere shows, including The Alchemist, The Gingerbread Man, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and a Christmas Show. Funding has been approved to assist with the costs associated with these shows. Hamilton Rowing Club Hamilton Rowing Club promotes participation in rowing, supporting rowers to compete in 6,000.00 regattas. The Club is used by three schools and funding has been approved to provide coaching assistance for 66 rowers from these schools. Hamilton Tulip Festival Trust Hamilton Tulip Festival Trust exists to establish tulip gardens (Victoria Garden - Hamilton 1,000.00 Gardens) and hold a free annual tulip festival at Hamilton Gardens. The 2013 festival will include folk dancing, Dutch food and crafts and Dutch music. Funding has been approved to assist with pavilion hire for the 2013 Hamilton Tulip Festival. Harvest Centre Charitable Trust Harvest Centre Charitable Trust exists to provide a safe, culturally appropriate environment for 4,000.00 youth to attend their after school, holiday and weekend programmes. This project is a ‘trace and track’ programme for youth in Otorohanga who are dropping out of finishing education - it helps them to prepare for interviews and work, tracking them until they are 21. The project has been successful in the past - there are few young people under 25 on an unemployment benefit. Last year the Trust had 82 referrals with an 80% success rate. Funding has been approved to assist with salary and administration costs of this initiative. Head Injury Society Waikato t/a Think! provides support, education and advocacy to people with head injuries and their families/ 945.00 Think! - The Head Injury Network carers. Think! also raises awareness of head injury prevention through seminars and for Kiwis expos. Funding has been approved to assist with venue and equipment hire for these seminars. Heart Foundation NZ The Heart Foundation’s goal is to stop premature deaths from heart disease. Funding has been 5,000.00 approved to assist with a year’s overheads for the Rheumatic Fever Eradication project. The Foundation’s Heart Health Advocate (HHA) will work with a Rheumatic Fever team from Health Waikato to provide resources for at-risk children in Waikato DHB’s region. This includes checking throats of children (estimated 10,000) in high risk areas and educating parents/ whānau/teachers and health professionals about the risks. IHC New Zealand Incorporated IHC NZ advocates for the rights, welfare and inclusion of people with intellectual 5,000.00 disabilities. IHC’s main service provision is IDEA services, which includes foster care, respite care, vocational activities, supported living and employment. IHC runs the Sandz Gallery vocational centre in Hamilton - it is a studio and gallery space for artists with intellectual disabilities. Funding has been approved to upgrade the lighting in three gallery exhibition spaces. Indigo Festival Trust The Indigo Festival Trust was established to celebrate the diversity of cultures, bringing together 1,380.00 all ethnicities across Hamilton in a 3-day showcase. The Festival is held at Garden Place and involves a street parade, ethnic youth night, food and craft stalls, and a cultural information hub. At least 25 community groups will participate. Funding has been approved to assist with marquee hire for the 2013 Festival. Kaitao Middle School Kaitao Middle School is a decile 2 school with 420 year 7 & 8 students, 70% of whom are 3,000.00 Maori. Kaiwhenua Organics Charitable Trust Kaiwhenua Organics Charitable Trust manage organic gardens. The Trust use the gardens to 13,540.00 support youth on community service, and to educate community groups, Marae, schools and kohanga. They also supply organic food for sale locally. The Trust has received funding for the purchase of materials for the kitchen/ablutions area to better support the education programmes that are delivered at the facility. Kawhia Tourism - Kawhia Kai Festival The Kawhia Kai Festival promotes tourism in Kawhia. It is an annual event that brings together 5,000.00 thousands of New Zealanders to celebrate Waitangi Day. The event has been hosted for seven years and is an iconic annual Festival with 7,000 visitors attending last year. The Festival brings together all of the local marae and has a focus on providing quality tradition as well as contemporary kai and high calibre entertainment acts. Funding has been approved to assist with stage, sound and lighting costs for the 2013 Festival. Kihikihi Waikato Eventing Kihikihi Waikato Eventing runs an annual international horse trial which is recognised by the 5,000.00 Waipa District Council as a key major event in the area. It is one of only three international horse trials in New Zealand and offers competition for up to 290 competitors of all levels. The event provides free entertainment to thousands of public who attend throughout the three days and phases of the competition, but particularly for the cross-country phase. Funding has been approved to assist with costs associated with the Kihikihi International Horse Trial event in 2013. Kiwi Pro-Am Country Music Kiwi Pro-Am’s main focus is to raise the profile of country music in New Zealand, and to support 10,000.00 Organisation emerging and established artists by showcasing them at events including the NZ Country Music Awards. The 8th annual NZ Country Music Awards in 2013 will be held at Founders’ Theatre in Hamilton in August. Funding has been approved to contribute towards publicity services. Lakeview Charitable Trust Lakeview Charitable Trust provide youth with outdoor education to develop self-esteem and life 2,000.00 skills. The Trust has purchased some land and is now seeking funding to develop a resource with adventure equipment e.g. rock climbing, abseiling, BMX, water equipment. It is intended that the resource will be used for events and camps that support young people and strengthen the community. Funding has been approved towards the purchase of adventure equipment. Leamington Kindergarten Leamington Kindergarten provides a pre-school service, offering learning through play in 1,500.00 accordance with the Early Childhood Education curriculum. The kindergarten recently had their storage shed extended, which has left an exposed area that is difficult to supervise and is leaching soil in wet weather. Plans have been made to turn this into a garden-based quiet space/activity area for safe use by the children. Funding has been approved to build a retaining wall for this area. Life Education Trust Hamilton Life Education Trust Hamilton provides health-based educational programmes to primary and 5,000.00 intermediate schools. The programme is linked to the curriculum and taught by the Trust’s Educator in their mobile classroom. The programme includes drama, technology and workbooks to teach about the body and making positive, healthy life choices. The Trust visits 62 schools in the area, reaching close to 6,000 children. Funding has been approved to assist with the purchase of workbooks, a Little Harold puppet and the exterior refurbishment of the Mobile classroom. LifeLine Waikato Lifeline Waikato provide telephone counselling for community wellbeing. Funding has been 10,642.00 approved to provide micro-counselling skills to residents in small Waikato rural towns, training workshops and expenses for supervision for face-to-face counsellors. Make-A-Wish Foundation Make-A-Wish Foundation grant wishes to Kiwi kids who are living with life-threatening medical 3,000.00 conditions. Eighteen wishes were granted in Waikato last year, and the current waiting list in the region is nine. Funding has been approved to assist with granting wishes for Waikato children. Male Survivors Sexual Male Survivors Sexual Abuse Trust Waikato supports male victims of childhood sexual abuse by 1,000.00 Abuse Trust Waikato providing counselling, group work and resources. Sexual abuse affects 1 in 6 males under 16. An essential part of the Trust’s operation is their phone line, which allows clients to contact the Trust - including 0800 crisis calls - and other organisations to refer clients. Funding has been approved to assist with phone costs. Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust seeks to restore and protect Maungatautari’s ecosystem, 8,695.65 removing introduced pests and predators, creating an ecological ‘island’ (pest-proof fenced) to protect indigenous plants and animals. To date, a 3,400ha site has 47km of fencing, with 15 mammal species eradicated. It is the last place in New Zealand where many species of bird, reptile and fauna can be found, and attracts over 30,000 visitors per year. Funding has been approved to purchase a 2-person 4-wheel motorbike, essential for carrying out fence repair work. McKenzie Centre McKenzie Centre is an early intervention centre for children with special needs ages 0 - 6, and 4,000.00 their families. Interventions are provided with a trans-disciplinary team of professionals. McKenzie Centre aims to provide children with disabilities and their families with the best start in life, increasing their chances of attending mainstream school and achieving their optimum potential. McKenzie Centre run parent communication programmes to teach parents how to recognise a child's early attempts at communication, and how to facilitate and encourage this which helps support their child's development and reduces stress at home. The programme is made up of a combination of group sessions and home visits, where the parent is videotaped interacting with the child. The video is then viewed with the speech-therapist and the parent has the opportunity to critique their own interactions with the child and identify the child's attempt at communication. Mercury Bay Museum Trust Board Mercury Bay Museum Trust exists to preserve and promote the heritage of the Mercury Bay 770.50 area through the museum. The Trust has received funding for a photo wall depicting the old township of Whitianga, themed around the ‘history of women’. The panel will be placed outside the mill workers house. Morrinsville Historical Society The Morrinsville Historical Society conducts historical research, collects and preserves artefacts 3,465.00 and photos as well as offering lectures/discussions. The Society has built a new museum costing $1.5 million, and is now preparing the exhibitions. Funding has been awarded to provide storage shelving. Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service Mt Maunganui Lifeguard Service is a volunteer lifesaving club, supporting a safe surf and beach 3,000.00 environment. The club puts in over 5,000 volunteer hours per season. Funding has been approved to contribute towards the replacement of handheld radios that are no longer working reliably. The radios are essential for communication between the lifeguard crews, and with St John Ambulance. MS Waikato Trust The MS Trust provides information and support services to sufferers of MS and other allied 2,000.00 neurological conditions. These services include education, newsletters, advocacy, social groups and carer support. Funding has been approved to assist with the production of two bi-monthly newsletters - one for all clients, and one for MS, Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia sufferers. The newsletters promote latest news, research and events. New Zealand Maori Golf Association The NZ Maori Golf Association (NZGMA) exists to enrich the lives of whānau through their 1,000.00 engagement with golf, with a focus on youth. NZGMA is managing the 76th National 5-day Tournament in Taupo in January. This event will feature an under-19 junior division for the first time. Funding has been approved to subsidise tournament entry fees for junior players. Nga Watene Maori O Te Rohe Potae Ngā Watene Maori O Te Rohe Potae Regional Association’s purpose is to support the Maori 3,000.00 Regional Association Wardens in this region, allowing for a more coordinated approach and shared resources. The Association has received funding to contribute towards the purchase of a specialised Mobile Communication Unit that can be used for the safety of staff and the public at major events, operations and emergencies within the region. The unit would have integrated analogue and digital capabilities to allow multi-agency radio communication with other services such as coastguard, civil defence and emergency services. Ngaruawahia Community House Ngaruawahia Community House is a vibrant hub that fosters local collaboration, information and 3,620.00 Incorporated services to improve community connectedness. Funding has been approved to provide children’s entertainment at the Waitangi Day event 2013, building on last year’s event that was attended by 2,500 people. The event is based on the idea of a family picnic, and will include local entertainment, a craft market, food stalls and bouncy castles. Ohura District Historical Ohura District Historical Museum Society preserves items of history and is the only organisation 2,000.00 Museum Society in the area that records history relating specifically to the local area. Funds have been awarded towards the renewal and improvement of electrical systems within the Ohura District Historical Museum. Omanu Beach Life Saving Club Omanu Beach Life Saving Club provides beach safety at Omanu beach through the Club’s 120 3,000.00 volunteers. The Club has received funding to assist with the cost of repairs/maintenance of the rescue paddle boards and skis. Opus Orchestra Trust Opus Orchestra Trust manage the only professional orchestra for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty 2,700.00 region. They aim to support local musicians and nurture young talent. Funding has been approved to assist with soloist’s fees for a feature performance at the Hamilton Gardens Art Festival in Feb 2013, where a select string ensemble of 15 from the Orchestra will support local solo artists Lara Hall perform ‘Four Seasons on a Summers Evening’. Otorohanga Pony Club Otorohanga Pony Club promotes riding and horse management, and provides coaching for 1,500.00 riders of all ages. Funding has been approved to create an enclosed, level area for young, inexperienced or less confident riders within their 7 acre club. Otorohanga Toy Library Otorohanga Toy Library offers toys, games and puzzles at low rental rates for children and 1,000.00 families in the community. Funding has been approved to assist with operational costs of this Library. Pacific Rose Festival Trust Funding is sought for the 11th Pacific Rose Bowl Festival in 2013. The Festival is a free event 1,507.50 held at Hamilton Gardens in November, attracting over 5,000 people during the event's four days. The Festival includes judging of the 'Rose of the Year', displays by the Waikato Rose Society and educational programmes for local schools. Funding has been awarded to provide security at the 2013 Pacific Rose Bowl Festival. Paeroa Central School Paeroa Central is a decile 1 primary and intermediate school, with 120 students, 96% of which 3,000.00 are Maori. The school’s families are financially disadvantaged and each class has its own garden for students to grow food for their families. The school has recently built a student kitchen for cooking classes. Funding has been approved to assist with the salary of a Kitchen Tutor, to cook for students using the grown-produce; this would provide a free healthy meal for the whole school once a week and a $1.00 - $2.50 healthy menu the rest of the week. The school plans to hire-out the kitchen to communities going forward to help make this project sustainable. Paeroa Community Support Trust Paeroa Community Support Trust operates a community centre that provides broad support for 2,000.00 the people of Paeroa and surrounding areas. The Trust has received funding towards the installation of a shower for special needs children using their ‘Children’s Carehouse’. Paeroa Highland Games Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo Committee was established to keep Scottish traditions alive 2,000.00 and Tattoo Committee and encourage youth to maintain their cultural roots. Funding has been approved to assist with television advertising for the 20th Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo in February. The event includes a mock Edinburgh Castle, massed pipe bands, cannons and music. Parachute Arts Trust Parachute Arts Trust’s aim is to help Christian musicians shift popular culture by communicating 2,000.00 (trading as Parachute Music) positive values and messages through their music. The annual Parachute musical festival builds on this. It is a non-profit, drug/alcohol free event held at Mystery Creek over Waikato Anniversary weekend in January, attracting over 20,000 people. Funding has been approved to assist with venue hire costs. Parakore on Marae Parakore on Marae exists to provide waste minimisation mentoring for Marae in the Waikato 4,000.00 Region, towards zero waste by 2020 with environmental benefits to the region. Funding has been approved to assist with the purchase of a trailer to transport waste minimisation resources (e.g. bins, worm farms and composters) to marae across the region. Parentline Charitable Trust Parentline Charitable Trust’s focus is on keeping children safe, which they do largely through 10,000.00 counselling and social work services to children 0-13. Funding has been approved to contribute to costs associated with the continuation of ‘Together our Positive School’, in four Hamilton primary schools. The well-researched programme creates safer, more effective learning environments at school through an onsite counselling service and group work around self- esteem and safety. The project also includes the Incredible Years programme that teaches parents strategies for positive parent-child relationships. Parents Inc The Parenting Place (Parents Inc.) was founded 20 years ago to support and encourage parents 1,500.00 (Trading as The Parenting Place) by providing practical skills to over 300,000 parents. Funding has been approved to subsidise low-income participants to attend Toolbox parenting groups in the Hamilton region. Toolbox is delivered by volunteer facilitators and include strategies and resources to support families, reducing family stress, violence and building resilience. Parkinsonism Society Waikato Parkinson’s Waikato offers support, education and information to people with Parkinson’s, 1,000.00 primarily through a newsletter, training and Field Officer meetings. Funding has been approved to assist with general operating expenses. Paws 4 Life Charitable Trust Paws 4 Life is a Hamilton-based trust working with unwanted animals. The Trust rescues, 2,000.00 rehabilitates and rehomes animals, and aims to reduce the number of unwanted animals through education. A major problem in Waikato is the number of unwanted cats and kittens and funding has been awarded to assist in the desex, micro-chip and rehome of unwanted cats and kittens. Perry Outdoor Education Trust Ltd Perry Outdoor Education Trsut engage and empower young people, facilitating outdoor 3,000.00 education programmes at low-decile secondary schools. Funding has been approved to subsidise the cost of programmes in three schools in Huntly, Ngaruawahia and Melville, making them accessible and affordable. Pohlen Foundation Trust The Pohlen Foundation Trust was developed to help fundraise for operational costs and facility 7,395.00 upgrades at Pohlen Hospital. The hospital provides healthcare and wellness services for the Matamata community, serving 600 short and long term patients a year. The current focus of the Trust is the creation of a new 6-room wing for the hospital. Funding has been approved to provide six rehabilitation chairs and two mobile oxygen concentrators for the new 6-room wing. Presbyterian Support Northern Presbyterian Support Northern is a client-centred social service provider, offering a range of 1,852.00 services to support community need. Their key client groups are families and children, older people and disabled people. Funding has been approved to purchase and install two new free- standing ovens for the Waikato Day Programme in Hamilton. The Day Programme offers activities, outings and social support daily for 25 community members who are isolated through cognitive impairment. The ovens are used to prepare meals for the programme, and for cooking programmes for a group with early onset dementia. Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Prisoners Aid and Rehabilitation Society provides support to offenders and their family/whānau 1,500.00 Society of the Waikato District through social support, prison visits, travel/accommodation help for whānau, assisting inmates with release plans, court support services to reduce social exclusion. PARS has received funding for a ten-week self-development programme that builds self esteem. It is based on helping the prisoners to find their identity and develop strategies for the future.. Raglan Community Patrol Raglan Community Patrol Charitable Trust provide community policing support to NZ 2,000.00 Charitable Trust Police. The Trust makes overnight patrols, watches over empty property and reports crime directly to the Police. The Trust uses volunteers who are trained to act as directed by NZ Police. In their first year of operation crime figures reduced 30%. An average patrol covers 40km, and the Trust carries out around 300 patrols annually. Funding has been approved to provide assistance with costs to operate the Raglan Community Patrol in Raglan, Manu Bay and Whale Bay when there are no Police officers on duty. Raglan Community Vehicle Trust Raglan Community Vehicle Trust provide transport services for the elderly and disabled in 4,540.00 Raglan. This includes hospital visits, shopping trips as well as social excursions. The community is semi-rural and low income, so this is valuable service. Funding has been approved to help maintain and run this transport service. Raglan Maori Wardens Raglan Maori Wardens Trust patrol the district for crime prevention and provide traffic control 2,000.00 Charitable Trust and security to seven Marae. Funding has been approved for vehicle expenses associated with the Trust’s ‘Justice Programme’. This programme promotes rehabilitative sentencing within the court system to support offenders back into the community. It is a Marae-based restorative programme, working across Probation, Police and social welfare agencies and with Kaumātua from the Marae to support offenders. Rape & Sexual Abuse Healing Centre Rape and Sexual Abuse Healing Centre offers free, confidential counselling services for clients 2,000.00 that are 12 years and older. Services include one on one counselling, group work, education and training. Funding has been approved to support operating costs of group counselling and education courses. These courses increase awareness and health around rape and sexual abuse. The courses are only one of their type operating in the area and are essential to the community wellbeing for women to feel safe and learn skills for specific situations. Relationship Services T/A Relationships Aotearoa is New Zealand’s largest counselling agency, providing high quality, 2,340.00 Relationships Aotearoa affordable counselling and education programmes to 30,000 couples, individuals and families so that they may sustain healthy, violence-free relationships. Clients include increasing numbers of youth and funding has been approved to assist with costs associated with group sessions of a positive parenting programme for teen parents. This 10-week programme helps to nurture at- risk young parents under-21. Some are couples, some are solo-parents and some have children in CYF’s care. Rhode Street School Rhode Street School is a full primary, decile 3 inner city school situated in Dinsdale, 15,000.00 Hamilton. The school’s local curriculum and kaupapa are deeply entwined around the environment. The school has been working to create ‘The Ecological Island’ - an innovative learning environment with waterways, wildlife ponds and solar/wind/hydro power. The school is engaging with universities, architects, engineers and scientists to create an environmental space that maximises student learning. Funding has been approved to purchase three shipping containers to create a student-designed recycled classroom/science lab. Riding for the Disabled - Cambridge Riding for the Disabled Cambridge offers supervised riding for children/youth with intellectual 1,053.00 and physical special needs, helping to build their self-esteem through the unique relationship between rider and horse. Funding has been approved to purchase and install a large mirror in their arena, enabling riders to see themselves to support better riding control, coordination and confidence. River City Training Academy River City Training Academy is the educational arm of the Desert Spring Foundation and 2,000.00 Hamilton Skills Centre Trust, and provides foundation skills to ‘at-risk’ learners such as literacy, NCEA preparation and work preparation. Their approach to delivery includes education and training, social services and community development. The Academy also utilise wilderness experiences for personal development. Funding has been awarded to assist with the provision of specialist tutors for the outdoor education programme that reaches 150 students. Riverlea Theatre and Arts Centre Riverlea Theatre and Arts Centre is a facility that supports involvement in all aspects of musical 4,000.00 and dramatic theatre. Funding has been approved towards the purchase of digital microphones for show performances. Road Safety Education Ltd Road Safety Education aims to reduce youth trauma on our roads through quality road safety 2,000.00 education. Their RYDA programme is designed for 15-17 year olds, equipping them with the knowledge to stay safe as they begin to drive. It is a 1-day out of school programme targeting attitudes and awareness over six interactive sessions. Car accidents is the leading cause of death for 15-19 year olds and New Zealand has the worst youth mortality stats in the OECD. Funding has been approved to assist with the delivery of these programmes to 1,500 young people. Ronald McDonald House The RMH Auckland Trust manages two Ronald McDonald Houses (Auckland Domain and 7,450.00 Grafton Mews) and a Family Room at Starship Children's Hospital. These three facilities provide accommodation to support 79 families a night, who need to stay near their critically ill child in Starship. The Family Room is on-site for the families of the most critically ill children. In 2011, Waikato families spent 2,980 room nights with RMH Auckland. Funding has been approved to refurbish one family bathroom in need of repair. Rosetown Community Services Trust The Counselling Centre was founded to provide professional counselling to families who cannot 1,000.00 (Rosetown Counselling Centre) afford it. Funding has been approved to assist with counselling costs for a subsidised Couples Counselling Programme. Rotary Club of Fairfield The Rotary Club of Fairfield would like to add a second shelter and communal BBQ to the 10,000.00 Claudelands Park playground. The playground attracts children from an area with higher- density population, a large proportion with younger families and a number of primary schools. A communal BBQ will compliment existing facilities to make the area a more enjoyable experience for children and families, encouraging more participation in outdoor activity and socialisation. Funds have been approved to assist this project. Rotary Club of Hamilton Charitable Rotary Club of Hamilton Charitable Trust is a subsidiary of the Rotary Club of Hamilton Inc, 10,000.00 Trust whose purpose is to encourage service to society and community participation. The 2013 Chinese New Year celebrations mark the Year of the Snake, and will be marked by the Chinese Lantern Festival at Garden Place in Hamilton. Royal NZ Plunket Society Car Seat Plunket Car Seat Services' mission is to ensure every child in Waikato is safely restrained when 2,000.00 Service in vehicles. Plunket offer low-cost car seat sales and rentals to help achieve this. Funding has been approved for the purchase of car seats. SAFE Network Incorporated SAFE operates the largest community-based professional treatment service in New Zealand 2,000.00 with work focussing on assisting adults and youth to address their sexually harmful behaviour. In addition, SAFE also have clinical specialists who work with children who have sexually problematic behaviours assisting them to learn to express themselves in healthier ways. It has become apparent that many educators and parents feel disempowered in regard to their capacity to keep children safe. Having worked with those with offending or concerning behaviour and their family/whanau for 20 years, SAFE has an inherent body of knowledge, both clinical and practical that can address this lack in the community. SAFE now have a professional trainer who has developed and tested the delivery of this information with six schools. Funding has been approved to assist with training, education and supporting materials for educating and empowering staff and Boards of Trustees of six schools. Sands Waikato Sands Waikato is a voluntary organisation that supports parents and whanau who have lost a 1,500.00 baby during pregnancy or as an infant after birth. Sands Waikato provide parents and their families with information to assist them to make informed decisions regarding their loss, provide ongoing education to health professionals and other caregivers about the experience of stillbirth, newborn death or other reproductive loss. Sands is the only organisation specifically focused on supporting families and health professionals when baby dies. Sands Waikato has taken on the role of organising the biennial national Sands conference which will occur on 21 - 22 September 2013. The conference offers health and other related professionals and bereaved parents and their families the opportunity to come together to share information and experiences. Funding has been approved to assist with printing and marketing costs for the 2013 conference. Schools Dramatic and Musical Schools Dramatic and Musical Theatre Education Trust is a group of Principals and Teachers 2,000.00 Theatre Education Trust that purchase and administer a large, valuable collection of children's costumes used in musical productions in Hamilton. Funding has been approved to contribute towards the construction of a storage facility for this collection. Shama Hamilton Ethnic Women’s Shama Hamilton Ethnic Women's Centre Trust works to empower and educate women so they 4,000.00 Centre Trust can integrate into New Zealand and raise safe and successful families and communities. Shama provides support, both preventive and intervention programmes, services and workshops in addressing family violence. Domestic violence is prevalent across the ethnic community. Funding has been awarded to assist with costs associated with delivering the 'Power to Change' workshop on domestic violence to 70 ethnic people. It is a psycho- educational and therapeutic group run in weekly two-hour sessions over a period of 10 - 14 weeks. Smart Waikato Trust Smart Waikato Trust connects businesses and schools to ultimately create more workplace 4,000.00 opportunities for youth. Funding has been approved to assist with costs associated with the Young Enterprise Scheme, where secondary school students form companies and are mentored by businesses. Southeast Kirikiriroa Community Southeast Kirikiriroa Community Association serves the community of Southeast Kirikiriroa by 2,000.00 Association providing services and programmes that enhance wellbeing such as budgeting, legal advice, ESOL classes, health programmes and a vegetable co-operative. Funding has been approved for the hire of musical instruments so that financially disadvantaged children can participate. Spirit of Adventure Trust The Spirit of Adventure Trust offers equal opportunities for young New Zealanders to develop 4,000.00 leadership qualities by attending a 10-day youth development voyage. Funding has been approved to subsidise the voyage cost for young people in financial need. Stage Challenge Foundation Stage Challenge aims to provide opportunities for students to develop their creative thinking, 8,000.00 performance and arts production skills. Stage Challenge is a national dance, drama and design event. Students (from schools or community groups) create 5-8 minute performances and get the experience of live performance. In Hamilton, 13 schools (900 students) will participate in the 2013 event. Funding has been approved to assist with lighting and sound costs associated with this event. StarJam Charitable Trust StarJam exists to create performance opportunities for young people with disabilities, 4,480.00 encouraging their talents and self-worth. The Trust provides an annual stage show and coaching to all participants. Funding has been approved to assist with volunteer expenses involved with expanding the number of its performing arts workshops for 70 young disabled people from Hamilton. Storytime Foundation Trust The Storytime Foundation promote increased parent-child bonding through reading and 2,000.00 literacy. Through the ‘Books for Babies’ programme, the trust partners with Plunket and other well child providers who deliver books to high-needs families to support this bonding and learning. Funding has been approved to purchase books for the Northern Waikato programme. Surf Life Saving New Zealand Surf Lifesaving New Zealand provides a comprehensive approach to drowning prevention 3,000.00 (Eastern Region) where education is paramount. The community education programme that Surf Life Saving New Zealand provides is Beach Education. This is a full day programme designed specifically for year 0 - 8 students, including water activities where children are taught about beach safety and how to have fun safely with the primary objective of the programme to deliver students a safe, fun and educational day. With a reduction of pool facilities available to students in the Waikato region it is imperative that opportunities exist where they can still learn how to stay safe in the water and have fun at little or no cost. A significant gap currently exists between the number of children drowning in New Zealand and the lack of water safety education available to inland communities. Funding has been approved to contribute to the salary of the Regional Programmes and Services Manager.
