                                                                                                                                   car- or house key. It was a burnished burgundy color made
                                                                                                                                   from soft Moroccan leather. I don’t know why Moroccan
                                                                                                                                   leather is a feature of good wallets. Perhaps, it’s made of
                                                                                                                                   skin from the stomach of a virgin camel, which is why it
                                                                                                                                   keeps its suppleness. Why isn’t neighboring Mauritanian
                                                                                                                                   leather as good? Again, I refer back to virgin camels, but
                                                                                                                                   it probably has something to do with Casablanca being in
                                                                                                                                   Morocco.

                                                                                                                                       When I opened that genuine Moroccan leather wal-
                                                                                                                                   let, I tapped into my alter ego. I was Rick Blaine holding
                                                                                                                                   court at the bar of my Café Americain, okaying a check
                                                                                                                                   for 10,000 francs while telling Signor Ferrari, the owner
                                                                                                                                   of the rival Blue Parrot, that my place was not for sale at
                                                                                                                                   any price.
