ROBERT WELLWOOD (06-11)
Rookie trainer Robert Wellwood took his young career to new
heights at Ellerslie’s iconic 2018 Boxing Day race meeting.

Less than five months into his partnership with respected
Cambridge horseman Roger James, Wellwood saddled his
first feature-race winner in the Listed Shaw’s Wire Ropes Uncle

Hypnos, ridden by teenaged apprentice Ryan Elliot, burst
through an inside gap to defeat the favourite Dawn Patrol in
an exciting finish to the $60,000 three-year-old event.

OLD BOYS’
SUMMER SPORTS DAY
The Annual Summer Sports fixture between the Old Boys and the College was held in pleasant conditions on Tuesday 5th
February 2019.
A really competitive couple of hours saw the Old Boys win the exchange 2-1. Thanks must go to all the “younger” Old Boys for
playing and all the supporters for coming along to watch. Happy Hour and a sausage sizzle completed a very enjoyable afternoon.

Thanks to Old Boys’ Secretary Rob Hay for organising the Old Boys’ teams and the day in general.

OLD BOYS’ NEWS
 OLD BOYS’
 WINTER SPORTS DAY
We had a very competitive afternoon of sport on Wednesday 3rd July for the 2019 Old Boys’ Winter Sports Exchange against
 the College.
A good crowd of Old Boys, past parents, grandparents, staff, and current pupils enjoyed watching the action. There was an
excellent turnout of “Younger” Old Boys to play in football, hockey and basketball and a nice mix of youth and experience for
the Old Boys’ clay target shooting team.
Results generally went the way of the Old Boys and the presentation of trophies at afternoon tea, then a social hour at the
Pavilion, finished off a very enjoyable afternoon.

With the summer exchange, in February, being won by the Old Boys 2-1, the LCOBA trophy for the overall 2019 exchange,
was retained by the Old Boys, by 5-2.

FOOTBALL Old Boys won 6-1, BASKETBALL Old Boys won 43-39,
HOCKEY Old Boys won 13-12, CLAY TARGET SHOOTING College won 35-29

                                            PIPE BAND REUNION
On Saturday, 22 June, a very successful Lindisfarne College Old Boys Pipe Band reunion
was held at the College. During the afternoon a number toured the College facilities and
marveled at the changes that have occurred.

At 6.00pm the formal part of the evening commenced in the Atrium, with cocktails. This
was followed by a haggis ceremony. The haggis party consisted of: Piper – Angus Wilton
(current Pipe Major), haggis bearer – William Faulkner, whisky bearer – Archie Mawley and
knife bearer – Steve Leigh (current pipe tutor). The haggis and the ceremony were both
provided by Mr Jimmy Whittle, a supporter of the College.
The Acting Rector, Mr. Campbell Howlett welcomed guests to the College, and spoke on
the exclusive ‘club’ that the Pipe Band is, as those that belong feel proud to do so. The Pipe
Band is an integral part of the fabric of the College and those present have contributed to
the tradition that still flourishes today.
The evening progressed with a sumptuous meal catered by the College kitchen. Angus
Wilton, Pipe Major, played a medley of tunes to the appreciation of the attendees. This was
followed by a toast to the College proposed by Old Boy Peter McNeil, with the reply by
                                            Barry Law, current Band Manager.
Many memories were shared, both individually and with the group, during the evening. To

2018
ACADEMIC RESULTS
The results achieved by our students in 2018 are, across the board, among the best ever recorded by the students of the
College. They reflect significant achievements at all levels of NCEA. Of particular note are the exceptional university entrance
results attained both this year and over the past few years. These results are all the more impressive when it is considered that
all students in Year 13 are entered and expected to try for university entrance.

While the outcomes illustrated by the results shown below are a commendation of the hard work and effort of all boys involved
in NCEA, it is also important to remember that assessment results reflect only a small subset of all the learning that goes on in
our College classrooms. A small percentage of all the skills and knowledge that boys acquire in the classroom is ever assessed
in a formal situation. It is often the learning and knowledge that is not assessed that forms the foundation of our boys’ success
as lifelong learners and good citizens.
