New Zealand Shearing Championships in Te Kuiti this year and he has achieved both goals, coming third and second respectively. He also won the Collier trophy for the top qualifier in the heats leading up to the championships in Te Kuiti. Perhaps Atawhai’s greatest achievement to date is the number one junior shearing ranking awarded to him by Shearing Sports NZ. In order to achieve this ranking, Atawhai had to complete 19 rounds of competition around the country from October last year to March this year. He achieved 10 first placings in these qualifying rounds and his position was never out of the top four. Atawhai also improved his personal best tally by shearing 306 lambs in eight hours at Mangaroa Station, Wairoa in January. Atawhai comes from a strong heritage of farming and shearing in particular and won his first competition at the ATAWHAI HADFIELD (15-18) Wairoa A&P show at the age of 13. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 2018 ACADEMIC RESULTS The results achieved by our students in 2018 are, across the board, among the best ever recorded by the students of the College. They reflect significant achievements at all levels of NCEA. Of particular note are the exceptional university entrance results attained both this year and over the past few years. These results are all the more impressive when it is considered that all students in Year 13 are entered and expected to try for university entrance. While the outcomes illustrated by the results shown below are a commendation of the hard work and effort of all boys involved in NCEA, it is also important to remember that assessment results reflect only a small subset of all the learning that goes on in our College classrooms. A small percentage of all the skills and knowledge that boys acquire in the classroom is ever assessed in a formal situation. It is often the learning and knowledge that is not assessed that forms the foundation of our boys’ success as lifelong learners and good citizens. 2018 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS A special congratulations to James Cowan who gained Scholarship passes in Media Studies, Drama, Geography, Economics and Classics – a fantastic result for any student nationally in Scholarship, but spectacular as a Year 12 student.
