On behalf of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, it’s my
pleasure to welcome you to the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation
and the City of Rancho Mirage. Rancho Mirage is a progressive

My Tribe is a federally recognized American Indian tribe with more
than 500 members. As a sovereign tribal government, the Tribe is
steward to more than 31,500 acres of ancestral lands that span
across many city and county jurisdictions (including Rancho Mirage)
and a protected bighorn sheep habitat.
We are committed to working with the city of Rancho Mirage to
continue to make this community a great place to live, work, and visit.

ernard was born in Condrieu, France in 1953. His family operated a
farm and this is where Bernard gained his appreciation for fresh, tasteful
food. His father wanted him to pick up a trade, so at age 13 he became an
apprentice charcutier and worked in Vienne until 1972. He worked under the
direction of Chef Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France from 1972 to 1974 as a cuisinier
and with Roger Verge in Le Moulin de Mougin. Bernard was sent by Paul Bo-
cuse to the United States in 1974 to work at Le Francais in Wheeling, Illinois as
a saucier/sous chef under the supervision of Jean Bachet. He then worked at the
Pump Room in Chicago, Illinois from 1978 until 1980 as Executive Chef.
Bernard was hired in 1980 at The Beverly Hills Hotel at the recommendation of Wolfgang Puck. He was
Executive Chef at the hotel until 1986. After leaving The Beverly Hills Hotel, Bernard went to the Grand
Champions Resort in Indian Wells and also to Aspen, Colorado serving as Executive Chef until opening
Cuistot in 1987.
When you have a thriving restaurant, widely regarded as one of the best, even perhaps the best in the des-
ert, why on earth would you want to move? A Chef ’s life is stressful enough! To take on the extra challenge
of moving everything from a well-established location to a totally new venue seems like the choice of a
workaholic run amok. But the opportunity to purchase the land at the intersection of two of the most trav-
eled and a renowned thoroughfare in the desert only presents itself once in a lifetime. So in 2003 Bernard
and his wife Susan broke ground on their new location. The building incorporated a rustic French farm-
house theme conceived by the Dervieuxs and executed by Design Development in Agoura Hills, CA.
Spacious dining areas are separated into four major rooms to accommodate up to 290 diners, including 80
on the heated, outdoor terrace. For private parties there is the comfortable Wine Room which seats up to
40. The largest dining room features a giant fireplace reminiscent of the one in Dervieux’s childhood home
near Lyon, France. Bernard’s Room overlooks the gleaming exposition kitchen for those wishing to experi-
ence the creative energy of the Chef and his staff in action.
Every Friday during lunch during the winter season, Cuistot features an extensive fashion show displaying
the latest designs from El Paseo premier boutiques.
Cuistot is open for lunch Tuesday~ Saturday, serving Saturday Brunch with
Happy Hour and dinner nightly.

SUNNYLANDS
T here is no place quite like Sunnylands. Completed in 1966, the estate served as a winter home
for diplomats, publishers, and philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Its architecture,
interior design, art collection, and history make Sunnylands one of the most culturally significant
homes in America.
The architectural style of the Annenbergs’ primary residence in Pennsylvania was traditional. With Sun-
nylands, constructed on 200 expansive acres at the corner of what is now Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra
Drives, they wanted a less formal approach. They hired famed modernist architect A. Quincy Jones and
actor-turned-interior designer William Haines.
Jones designed the house in the midcentury modern style, but incorporated a Mayan theme. The pyra-
midal shape of its roof, lava stone walls, and the Mexican column—installed at the center of the circular
driveway in the mid-60s—speak to this sensibility.
Floor-to-ceiling glass exterior walls provide spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and con-
nect the interior of the home with the surrounding landscape. Haines designed the furniture with a low
silhouette, furthering the setting as a place for relaxation.
For more than 40 years, the Annenbergs entertained high-profile guests at Sunnylands, including seven
U.S. presidents, British royalty, and famous entertainers of the twentieth century. Frank Sinatra married
Barbara Marx in front of the fireplace in 1976. President George H.W. Bush hosted an official dinner
for Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu of Japan in 1993. President Ronald and Nancy Reagan celebrated New
Year’s Eve at Sunnylands for decades.
In 2001, the Annenbergs created the nonprofit Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands to operate
Sunnylands into the future as a high-level retreat center, a “Camp David of the West.”
President Barack Obama became the eighth president to visit Sunnylands in 2013, when he hosted the
first of three presidential summits, meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in what was termed the
“shirt-sleeve summit,” due to its informal nature.
Since 2012, The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands has welcomed leaders at the highest levels in govern-
ment, science, education, and the arts to “encourage international agreement and promote world peace.”
When retreats are not in session, the public can experience the historic home through guided tours.
Adjacent to the estate is Sunnylands Center & Gardens, a contemporary space open free to the public
Wednesday through Sunday, 8:30 am to 4 pm, from mid-September through early June. Closed in sum-
mer.
