BRIAN PFOLTNER — COMPOSER Dr. Brian Pfoltner received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995. Brian also holds degrees from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, and Morningside College, Sioux City, IA. Currently Dr. Pfoltner is Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, NE. In this position he oversees the entire music program, directs the adult choir and bell choir, and various instrumental groups, and is the founder and artistic/executive director of the Arts for the Soul Music & Fine Arts Series. He is also the trumpet instructor at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. As a composer and arranger, Brian has written and arranged many works for a wide variety of choral and instrumental ensembles. In 2008 he was awarded the Nebraska Arts Council’s highest Distinguished Achievement Award for musical composition, and in 2014 was again awarded their Individual Artist Fellowship in composition. PROGRAM NOTES Mile High Overture — WORLD PREMIERE Mile High Overture was commissioned for the 40th anniversary season of the Denver Brass. The goal was to create a work that represented both the Denver Brass sound, as well as be representative of Denver and the state of Colorado. I live in Lincoln, Nebraska. While I love the area, when my family plans vacations we often try to travel to locations that provide a decided change of scenery. We often travel to Colorado to take in the wonder and beauty of the mountains. When composing this piece and thinking about the Rockies and their draw for people, I realized that people don’t all come to the mountains for the same things. Some come to gaze in wonder at the majesty of the views, experiencing moments of quiet and contemplative awe, but others come seeking the thrills that the mountains provide. From skiers to mountain climbers and snowboarders, these people are looking for something very different than quiet contemplation. In this piece I tried to capture both of these types of mountain-top experiences in musical terms. The piece opens with a majestic theme that eventually moves into a faster and more rhythmically exciting section (the listener can imagine whatever thrilling adventure they would like here). A more introspective section then takes over, building to a powerful climactic moment that finally gives way to a return of the thrill-seekers. I hope you enjoy it. - Brian Pfoltner PURCHASE NEW MUSIC FOR DENVER BRASS One of Denver Brass’ greatest needs is sponsors to provide funding for the creation of new musical works. Everything performed by the ensemble must be created to align with our unique Denver Brass instrumentation and sound. Your gift of music will be treasured, and your name will appear in programs when your piece is performed for the next ten years. Call us at 303-832-HORN(4676) or email info@denverbrass.org to ask about new works slated for the current and upcoming season. NOV 2021 | PULLING OUT THE STOPS | 5
