                                                     from offline research (eg. Face-to-face interviewing) to
                                                     online research. It is perhaps more critical to consider
                                                     this now given the need to practice more social
                                                     distancing in the COVID-19 situation.

SOCIAL MOBILITY
Ipsos' survey for the World Economic Forum shows
widespread enthusiasm about the future in
emerging markets contrasting with rampant
pessimism in mature economies.

Global citizens are evenly split on whether today’s
young people are better or worse off than their
parents when it comes to their financial wellbeing
and job security. Pessimists outnumber optimists
when considering young people’s personal safety
and their ability to be homeowners and to live
comfortably when they retire. On the other hand,
there is a global consensus about today’s youth
being better off than their elders in terms of
having access to information and to
entertainment.

                                                               In just one film (2 hours 12 minutes to be exact), the
                                                               internationally acclaimed “Parasite” movie conjured
                                                               and reflected the reality of economic hopes and
                                                               tragedies. Coming from a single-parent family and
                                                               growing up with my grandparents, I found myself
                                                               laughing and deep in thought as my sister and I
                                                               too scoured our flat like ‘parasites’ for free wifi (I
                                                               still remember the wifi network name ‘linksys’),
                                                               going to friends’ houses to stay and of course, using
                                                               our imagination as a form of escape for a more
                                                               stable and better life.

                                                               The use of ‘scholars rock’ in the movie adds an
                                                               extra layer to the story, initially I felt it was a
                                                               metaphorical symbol of social mobility but at the
                                                               end it carried this somber tone like it was a cursed
                                                               object.

                                                            In the current COVID-19 situation, Ipsos conducted an
                                                            independent study among Singaporeans to
                                                            understand their attitudes towards the crisis and their
                                                            confidence in the Singapore government.

                                                            The study consists of a nationally representative survey
                                                            over the days just before and after DORSCON alert
                                                            level was raised to Orange on 5th to 9th February
                                                            2020; and supplemented with analytics on relevant
                                                            publicly available data from social media sources in
                                                            Singapore between 1st February 2020 to 12th March
                                                            2020.

With the pricing and cycle time benefits that online
research provides, transitioning programs from offline
to online should be a key consideration. However, the
decision to change is not always an easy one, as
change often brings disruption to data trends.
