40 41 Campus Map A Campus Steeped in History The Xaverian brothers began teaching in Manchester in 1862, having founded their order in Belgium. Our current Firwood building had been built in 1871 by Alfred Waterhouse, and the brothers purchased and renovated it to become a school building, which was blessed and opened in 1907 as Xaverian College, a school for boys. Sunbury house was purchased in 1908, while Marylands (and the lawns) followed in 1931, and Ward Hall was acquired in 1949 as the school grew and flourished. Under the leadership of Brother Cyril, a Sixth-Form block was opened in 1965, which is now known as Xavier, our centre for science. 1977 was a year of huge change for the college, as Xaverian moved from being a boys’ grammar school, to a Sixth Form College for both males and females. Further modernisation and building work has taken place in recent years, including the Ryken building in 2002, Mayfield in 2005, and the new Ward Hall extensions in 2014 and 2017.
