Barclay Manor Anthony Kupferschmidt Executive Director I know that many of our members, clients, customers, and volunteers are concerned about the forthcoming move of St. Paul’s Hospital. While Vancouver Coastal Health has made efforts to increase local health care services with the launch of the new Urgent Primary Care Centre, I share your concerns about what will remain both at the site and in the community in general. While our organization normally focuses on issues in the West End and surrounding neighbourhoods, this issue has prompted us to consider forthcoming changes to a neighbourhood further to the east. The False Creek Flats will become the new home to St. Paul’s Hospital, and how it is designed could impact us as well. When the move of St Paul’s Hospital was first announced, I heard a lot of comments from older adults afraid of dying in an ambulance stuck in traffic trying to get to the new hospital. There has obviously been something reassuring about having an emergency room and other health care services right in our neighbourhood. Since 2015, I have had the opportunity to sit on a few different committees focused on designing the new St. Paul’s Hospital. I felt this was important to ensure that the new hospital is built to serve the needs of older adults in the West End and the rest of the city. However, equally important is how one will get to the new hospital. One of the concerns I have expressed about the new St. Paul’s Hospital is how easy it will be to get there. The Main Street - Science World Skytrain station will be very close to the new hospital, but I don’t feel there is currently good access to this site from the West End by bus, for example. If so many of the clinics in the hospital that older adults in the West End use will move with it, how will members of our community get there? We have been told that there will be future discussions about transit connections to the new St. Paul’s Hospital, and I eagerly look forward to those. We will also be closely watching the plan to redesign the street network when the viaducts come down. But right now, there is work underway to plan the False Creek Flats Arterial, which will be the main road route through this neighbourhood. This will need to consider the new St. Paul’s Hospital to ensure there is a reliable route from downtown. I have provided input on this new arterial route on behalf of WESN, but I encourage you to learn more about this planning process and make comments, submit your ideas, or attend a public workshop: https://vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/false-creek-flats-arterial.aspx https://fcfcommunitypanel.com/ 4
Barclay Manor Scott Swan Manager of Volunteer Resources and Community Services The Volunteer Factor – Lifting Communities WESN is so grateful to our 200+ volunteers who give their time to the programs and services we offer our members and clients. On any given day of the week we have volunteers: • offering information and referrals to adults ages 55+ in the West End out of Kay’s Place • selling donated items at our Clothes and Collectibles thrift boutique • hosting a program at Barclay Manor • offering peer support • helping someone set up an email account • working on a report for a board meeting • setting up for a special event • delivering a stack of newsletters • showing someone how to use their cell phone • driving individuals to medical appointments • shopping for an individual who is not able to get out of their home • visiting individuals in their home • helping young students with their reading skills • helping individuals in their home with minor repairs • greeting members and visitors at Barclay Manor What’s behind each of these actions? It’s the Volunteer Factor! April 7-13, 2019 is National Volunteer Week, and this year’s theme is “The Volunteer Factor – Lifting Communities.” This national recognition effort is to assist Canadians with reflecting on the multitude of volunteer actions taken to help people, communities and neighbourhoods. Volunteering can also give volunteers a lift. When we volunteer, our spirits are lifted when we have the opportunity to work with others. Our sense of purpose is lifted when we see how our efforts have helped someone else. Our confidence lifts when we gain skills and experience through volunteering, helping us get into a competitive school program or successfully find a job. What lifts your chances to achieve your goals…it’s the Volunteer Factor! The beautiful image of the hot air balloons of different sizes, shapes and colours reflects the diversity of community volunteers. It illustrates that when people volunteer together, the sky is the limit, in terms of what they can achieve. From all of us at the West End Seniors’ Network, we wish you a happy National Volunteer Week 2019, and also a big THANK YOU to each of our volunteers. 5
Barclay Manor Kaitlin Hong Tai Manager of Programs Everyone has their own habits and routines - they give us structure. But sometimes you need to shake up the routine to keep yourself engaged in life. That’s where WESN can help! Even if you are a long-standing member of our organization, there are many activities and events going on each month. I challenge you to try something new. If you have never been to the Happy Hookers knitting and crocheting group on Tuesdays and Fridays (10:00AM - 12:00PM) and you know how to knit or crochet - try it out this month! If you normally attend movie screenings, try stretching out those legs with a walk with the Outdoor Walking Group on Wednesday (11:30AM - 12:30PM) or Friday (2:30PM - 3:30PM). If you have never been to Barclay Manor, meet and chat with your peers and our Executive Director at Tea with Anthony (Monday, April 8 from 2:00PM - 3:00PM)! See our programs on pages 12-18. We have two special outings this month that I want to draw your attention to: a group visit to the Cherry Jam Downtown Concert at Burrard Station and a Bowling Tournament with South Granville Seniors Centre and 411 Seniors Centre. See page 12 for details. Also on page 12, you will find details for two special events: an Easter Egg Hunt and Dance Centre project! Take a look and join in on the fun! Lastly, do not forget that we always have many excellent presenters coming in each month. Presentations and workshops change - so stay informed by checking the monthly newsletter. If you are interested in attending, call or email us to register so we do not cancel session due to low numbers! Of note is our upcoming session with Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary. The group will teach you about exotic birds, and you can meet a few too! An amazing experience is sure to result. If you have any program suggestions, feel free to share them with me.
