Welcome to the 2021 American Suzuki Institute! We have been excitedly making preparations – setting links, making schedules, making nametags, and answering phone calls about last-minute details. It has certainly been a challenging 18 months, and the pandemic has left its mark on all of us. The time we have spent apart has served to make us appreciate what it means to be together. It also has created great anticipation. Whether in-person or online, we are excited to see you, catch up with you, and to hear you play your beautiful pieces. We have much to celebrate! In addition to our usual classes, guest artist concerts and other events, we also will have our Jubilee Celebration on Saturday, July 24. ASI was the very first Summer Institute outside of Japan. It officially turned 50 last summer, but because of the pandemic, we delayed the celebration until this year. We hope you will join us for the events of that very special day. Each year, the American Suzuki Institute recognizes a special person who has made a significant difference in the Suzuki world by presenting the Suzuki Chair award. This year’s winner has touched the lives of many who have passed through ASI. She is known for her friendly smile, kind manner, and her generous spirit. She truly lives the Suzuki Philosophy every day. She has been part of ASI and ASC as a parent, student and as Program Assistant. She has “taken care” many of us at one time or another – counseling parents about starting younger siblings, helping us to make a “quick” change in a schedule, and generally making us feel like nothing is ever too much trouble. We are proud to announce the winner of this year’s ASI Suzuki Chair Award – Lynn Karbowski. Please congratulate Lynn if you see her and enjoy your week with all your ASI teachers and friends! Ann Marie Novak, Director of Suzuki Programs Janelle Severson, ASI Strings Coordinator 2021 American Suzuki Institute 2

Tree of Life The “ASI Tree of Life” is a creation that is being commissioned to celebrate 50 years of growth of the American Suzuki Institute. In 1971, Margery Aber, inspired by Shinichi Suzuki, planted the seed for the Institute. In this online version, the tree is lovingly wrapped by the names off all of the faculty who have taught at ASI in these first 50 years. The leaves represent present-day families, alumni and friends whose lives have been touched by ASI and who support the ongoing process of Celebrating the Past – Shaping the Future. An interactive online version is being drafted for the 2021 virtual Institute and will appear on our website just before the Jubilee. Donations can be made at: www.uwsp.edu/suzuki Please indicate “ASI Tree of Life” in the comment box. Your name will appear on one of the leaves. A large canvas will be completed for display at the 2022 Institute and for many years to come. In the physical representation, Miss Aber and the original faculty form the roots and trunk of the tree. The faculty in the remaining decades branch ever outward and upward. 2021 American Suzuki Institute 3
Miss Aber would be happy to know that her music collection is being shared with her former students, colleagues, young teachers/educators just building their music library and collectors who are looking for a particular old edition --- all while celebrating the 50th Jubilee of the American Suzuki Institute which she founded and to which you’re invited. The library contains hundreds of titles and of various instrumentations from violin and piano solos, sonatas and concerti, to chamber music for various string combinations, and many string quartets. There is music for the young reader as well as the seasoned professional. Many selections have her autograph and/or her fingerings. Auction participants will be able to peruse the packets by instrumentation. The title, composer, publisher, and editor are listed for each piece, as well if it contains her autograph. For the curious, titles with the name “Elmer Slama” belonged to Miss Aber’s first violin teacher in Racine, WI. Auction Link Here: https://www.silentauctionpro.com/bidonlinegrid.php?groupId=1859 All are welcome to bid at the auction beginning July 22 and ending on July 30. This week was chosen because it overlaps the American Suzuki Institute 50th Jubilee celebration. Miss Aber was the founder of this, the first institute outside of Japan, so it only seemed appropriate to pair the two together. All proceeds will go to the American Suzuki Foundation. To ASI Alumni: We invite you to celebrate the influence the ASI has had in your own life and to shape the future of those who are yet to come by adding a leaf to the ASI Tree of Life. 2021 American Suzuki Institute 4

One of the unique aspects of ASI is the focus we give to parents and teacher workshop participants. Monday through Thursday at 11:05 am several lectures are offered to aid you in your role as home teacher. And, to make it even easier for moms and dads to have their mind and spirit nourished, we’re offering several new electives for the kids at the same time. Check the office for openings in electives; they cost $75. Electives will start at 11 a.m. or 6 p.m. and lectures at 11:05. Lectures will end at 11:45 and student activities at 11:50. This enables you to attend a full lecture while your child attends an activity. Both will be offered in the NFAC and teachers will stay with children until parents have picked them up. Check the daily schedule for lectures and student activities. General Information The Role of Recitals at an Institute… Dr. Suzuki taught that each piece requires three stages of learning— 1. The introduction of the particular technique(s) that a piece utilizes 2. The fluency phase - when students can play the piece from beginning to end from memory with all the correct rhythms, fingerings, bowings and technique 3. The artistic phase - when the mechanics of the piece are so habitual that the performer can communicate a mood or character or a feeling through the music. These are the performances that really speak to the audience’s heart. Since the piece is well within the performer’s skill level and the execution is effortless, there is surplus attention to give to the emotional content of the piece. Sometimes the amount of time between when a piece is fluent and when it becomes artistic can be as much as a year or two or when the student is well into the next book. Professional performers for example, never take their newest piece first to the concert halls in big cities with music critics. Instead, they hone their performing skills in much smaller venues until the piece becomes comfortable, easy and they feel confident. True artists are hardly ever satisfied. They are always trying to improve and are reaching for the next level of playing. And that’s why you’re here—to learn how to get to the next level, how to become an artist. And what better way than to have five consecutive lessons where one can hardly practice a small task incorrectly? Secondly, since we as Suzuki students believe in the power of the environment, we are also here to be inspired by outstanding performers, both adults and students, who have achieved that level of communication in their performance. Thus, the evidence of a successful institute experience is not whether students are selected to perform on a recital, but rather if they leave ASI a with the tools and the motivation to be a more artistic player than when they arrived.
