Our current circumstances have made parents and educators rely on more screen time to educate and entertain young children. But, how do you we find balance to promote creativity, imagination and engagement in this screen- dependent world? This workshop will examine current research on the impact of screen time on young children's de- velopment, creativity and engagement and provide links to non-screen resources for young children, their parents and educators. Kym Stewart holds a PhD in Education and an M.A in Communications from Simon Fraser University. Her PhD thesis ex- plores her decades of media research, including various projects looking at children’s media culture and media educa- tion practices. Her M.A. also explored youth media culture and is one of the earliest explorations of South Korea’s youth gaming and PC-Bang culture. She currently works as an instructor in the School of Communication at Capilano University. Terri’s approach to drumming is beginning with a story. What is a drum and what elements of Mother Earth is it made from? Basic Drum beats and patterns and breathing is then discussed. As this is a beginner’s session, basic songs, nursery rhymes, chants, lullabies are encouraged to be brought to the drumming circle. The intent is to have one feel comforta- ble holding a drum and feeling its medicine. Terri Mae Galligos belongs to the Tl’amin Nation (Northern Coast Salish). She is a district Aboriginal resource teacher for the Coquitlam board of education. Her role is advocating Indigenous ways of being and decolonizing methodologies through allyship. Terri believes in the honor of one is the honor of all and the dishonor of one is the dishonor of all. Build- ing positive, sustainable relationships is Terri’s approach when debunking myths that her culture is something of the past.
