FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER INTRODUCTION The Model RB34 round baler is the smallest baler in the Challenger® variable chamber round baler line. The RB34 baler is sized primarily for operators with lower horsepower tractors. The RB34 is ideal for the smaller farmer who wants to move from small square bales to easier to handle round bales. It is also ideal for the small farmer who wants to move away from hiring a custom round bale operator and have more control over the timing of his baling. The RB34 is also a good fit for the smaller farmer that is tired of the frequent breakdowns with used balers and wants to move into a new, more dependable baler. Although designed small, the RB34 has the inherent durability and capacity to satisfy a larger operation that requires a small hay package. The RB34 bale can be used in operations where a small hay package may need to be moved around to feed livestock and the bales are light enough to move by hand or with a small tractor or skid steer loader, and small enough to be transported through narrow doorways or alleyways. The Challenger® RB34 was designed to produce high quality round bales with simple operation and easy to understand controls. 1
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Challenger® Model RB34 round baler produces a 39” wide by 30” to 52” diameter (1.0 by 1.4 meter) hard-core bale, weighing up to 550 pounds (249 kilograms). The baler requires a tractor with a minimum of 30 PTO horsepower (22 kilowatt), a 540-rpm PTO and a single hydraulic remote outlet. In keeping with the Challenger® round baler model numbering system, the last two digits of the model number depict the bale size. The last number in the model number refers to the approximate width of the bale in feet (RB34). The second to last number in the model number refers to the approximate maximum diameter of the bale in feet (RB34). The Challenger® RB34 is a Class I (55 cu. ft. and under) baler with a bale chamber capacity of up to 51.7 cu. ft. (1.46 cubic meters). It is capable of handling a wide variety of crops with ease. The open throat, vertical bale chamber design provides a proven design that starts bales easily and creates bales with consistent density. The variable chamber design of the baler produces a hard-core bale with excellent storage characteristics, while requiring less horsepower to operate than a comparable fixed chamber baler. The Challenger® RB34 has a variety of options available to customize the baler for each customer’s needs. These options include Gathering Wheels, Electric Twine Threader, Bale Ramps and a Fire Extinguisher 2
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Variable Chamber Baler Design Variable chamber balers work by “varying” the chamber size as the bale size increases. As the crop enters the bale chamber, the belts and rollers expand to accommodate the growing bale. Tension arm springs provide tension for bale density and the forming belts. Most competitive variable chamber baler manufacturers combine the functions of bale density, and belt tension on a single control arm. We find that we can obtain more consistent belt tension and therefore more consistent bale density by separating the two functions. Consistent belt tension also provides increased belt and lacing life. The bale density on the RB34 is preset at the factory with large, non-adjustable tension springs. The hard-core bale produced by a variable chamber baler provides consistent bale density from the core to the outer shell. This characteristic allows the operator to vary the bale diameter to meet his requirements or to wrap the last bale of the field. MARKET The Challenger® Model RB34 round baler is designed for operators needing a small, easy to handle, bale package. The low bale weight and narrow width provide convenient handling, transportation, and feeding for the customer. The RB34 is an excellent value, providing easy serviceability and low maintenance, in a very cost effective baler. We are the only manufacturer producing a round baler with a 3’ bale width. 3
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER GENERAL Simplicity The Challenger® Model RB34 round baler is small in design and large in capacity with very few adjustments. Controls are simple to understand and easy to operate. This allows even the newest operator to go to the field and start baling with very little training. This saves both the owner and dealer time and costs associated with training new operators. Equal Angle Hitch The Challenger® RB34 is equipped with an equal angle hitch and Power Take Off (PTO). The tractor power is transferred through the equal angle PTO for smooth operation while turning under load. The equal angle hitch prevents damage or excessive wear to the driveline because there is less driveline vibration and chatter during turns. 4
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Narrow Tongue The narrow tongue allows the baler to make short turns up to 80 degrees without the tractor tire contacting the tongue. This permits the operator to more efficiently bale in smaller fields and to maneuver around field hazards. This helps to make the RB34 a more productive unit. 5
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER PICKUP Low Profile Pickup The Model RB34 has a 38.8” (986mm) wide, three tine bar, low profile pickup that provides gentle crop handling. The “low profile” (small diameter) pickup gently moves delicate hay crop into the bale chamber with minimum disruption or abrupt direction change. Crop loss is minimized as fewer leaves are shattered from the stem because our balers don’t have to lift the crop as high to feed it into the baler. This results in more profitability for the farmer because more leaves, the highly nutritious part of the plant, are put in the bale, and fewer leaves are scattered back onto the hayfields. Steel Windguards The Challenger® RB34 has evenly spaced steel windguards that control the flow of the hay on the pickup. They help feed the hay into the baler in an even mat. The tine spacing is 2.6” (66 mm) to minimize the amount of crop falling between the tines. This combination ensures even feeding of the baler so the crop ends up in the bale. Easy Pickup Adjustment The pickup lift is a simple manual lever located on the left hand side of the baler tongue. Manual lift was chosen because the pickup is very light on this size of baler and most tractors used on this size baler have limited hydraulics. Just remove the lock pin, raise or lower the pickup, replace the lock pin and you are ready to go. It’s fast and easy to switch from road to field, or field to road position. 6
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER MAINFRAME, ROLLERS AND BELTS Sure-Trac™ Crowned Roller The Sure-Trac™ crowned roller (upper drive roller) drives the 4.8-inch (122 mm) wide forming belts. The crowned drive surface centers the belts and provides a positive drive surface, resulting in longer belt life and less maintenance. Centering of the belts and the aggressive drive surface keeps the belts turning, even under adverse conditions. Forming Belts The bale forming belts in the RB34 are 4.8” (122 mm) wide and are made of high quality, synthetic fabric. The RB34 utilizes five belts designed for long trouble-free service under high loads. The drive side of the belt has a textured surface for traction on the rolls, while the bale forming side has a “mini-rough” surface to gently but positively handle and compress the bale. Belt Tracking Adjustment Slotted holes on both the right and left sides at the bottom of the tailgate make adjustments to belt alignment very fast and simple. You don’t have to climb on top of the baler to keep the belt tracking true. 7
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Starting Roll The Starting Roll (1) in the Challenger® RB34 is a square tube that rotates to aggressively turn the crop to start the “core” of the bale. Once the core is started, the rest of the bale forms more easily. Our square tube starting roll works well in a variety of crops to start the initial core of the bale. The crop deflector (2) keeps the incoming crop from wrapping around the starting roll and helps keep short crop from bunching up in the pickup/throat area. Balanced, Dual Arm Tension System The Dual Arm tension system provides optimum bale density and consistent tension to the bale forming belts throughout the baling cycle. Some other manufacturers provide tension only on one side of the baler and try to transfer the tension to both sides through torsion tubes. This uneven application of tension causes frame flexing, which in turn causes belt mis- tracking. This can cause premature belt failure and poor bale formation. Most other manufacturers of variable chamber balers use a single control arm to apply bale density and belt tension. By separating these functions, we can get better belt tension control from core to maximum bale diameter. With less instantaneous belt slippage, we get more consistent bale density. Right Side of Baler-Dual Control Left Side of Baler-Dual Control Serviceability Notice the single side shields that easily open to allow full access to the baler on both sides. 8
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Over Size Protection A pickup declutcher provides the baler protection from damage that could occur if an oversized bale is produced. The declutcher rod disengages the pickup drive when the maximum bale size has been reached. This prevents additional crop from entering the bale chamber and forcing the bale forming belts that are traveling in opposite directions from contacting each other. Belt life will be prolonged and undue stress on the baler will be prevented. Bale Size Indicator, Bale Full Alert The Challenger® RB34 utilizes a simple mechanical bale size indicator (1) that is easily visible on the front, right hand side of the baler. The indicator provides bale size information, allowing the operator to check the bale size at any time during the baling process. The operator has complete control of the bale size from the tractor seat. By monitoring the bale size indicator the operator can start the tying cycle at a smaller than full size bale if desired. The Bale Full Alert (2) warns the operator when the selected bale size is reached. A sprocket attached to the sizing roller arm, contacts the alert rod causing a sharp ratcheting sound. To change the desired bale size, the operator adjusts the alert rod. 9
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER BALE WRAPPING Twine Tie The Challenger® RB34 comes with a manual twine tie system as standard equipment. A pull rope twine tie provides an effective, economical bale tying system. This system is designed for tractors with limited hydraulic capacity. The operator controls the twine spacing by the speed at which the rope is released. An optional electric twine tie kit may be added. Twine Arm Indicator The RB34 includes a twine arm indicator that provides a visual monitor of the twine arm position as the bale is being wrapped. The indicator allows the operator to gauge the position and amount of twine being placed on the bale. Twin Tube Twine Arm A new feature on the RB34 is the TwinTubeTwine Arm. The double tube twine arm applies two twines to the bale simultaneously. This allows the operator to wrap the bale in half the time of the 6343 or 4643 balers. This makes the baler more productive. The spacing between the two twine tubes is adjustable from 2” to 6” to allow the operator flexibility in twine application 10
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Twine Cutoff The twine is pulled over an anvil when the twine arm comes back to the home position. As the twine arm returns to home position, it activates a mechanism that pulls a blade down onto the anvil, which cuts the twine and leaves enough to start the next tie cycle. Twine Storage The twine storage box on the RB34 is between the A-frame members of the tongue. The twine box holds two balls of twine, which will wrap about 300 bales at a 4”, twine spacing. This location allows easy access for loading twine. The twine is easy to thread in the RB34 because the twine storage is close to the twine arm and there are no long tubes to feed the twine through. Tailgate Indicator Rod The tailgate indicator rod projects from the right top of the baler. It shows the operator when the tailgate is latched or unlatched. The right hand tailgate cylinder operates the tailgate indicator rod. The rod is visible to the operator when the tailgate is not latched. The rod disappears from view when the tailgate is latched. This indicates that the operator can begin to make the next bale. 11
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Bale Counter A resetable mechanical bale counter is standard equipment on the Challenger® RB34. Many more expensive balers from other manufacturers only offer bale counters as optional equipment. The bale counter is advanced each time the tailgate is cycled. It is resetable so the operator can keep track of the bales per field, per job or per day as he sees fit. Lighting The RB34 meets the latest A.S.A.E. Lighting and Marking Standard for Agricultural Equipment. It includes amber warning flashers, red tail/brake lights with a standard 7-Pin connector to plug into the tractor. There is also an SMV emblem on the back of the tailgate. 12
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT (FIELD INSTALLED) Windrow Gathering Wheels The Windrow Gathering Wheel option increases the effective operating width of the pickup. This helps the operator feed more crop to the edges of the bale chamber to make firm walled, square shouldered bales that will retain their round shape and not squat down while in storage. The gathering wheels help build a more dense, weather resistant bale that will shed moisture and preserve more of the crop for less storage losses. Wholegoods Kit – BK55059 Estimated Installation Time – 2 Hours 13
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Bale Ejection Ramps The optional Bale Ramp Kit includes two spring loaded ramps that allow the operator to bale without backing up to eject each bale. When the tailgate is opened, the weight of the bale forces the ramps down. The bale then rolls down the ramps, which spring back up as soon as the bale rolls off of them. When the ramps spring back up, they hold the bale from rolling back into the path of the tailgate as it is closed. This allows more productive baling. Wholegoods Kit – BK50641 Estimated Installation Time – 0.5 Hr. Electric Twine Tie The electric twine tie control moves the twine arm with an electric actuator. A toggle switch, which controls the actuator, can be mounted on the tractor for the operator’s convenience. The operator controls the twine spacing and number of wraps with the toggle switch instead of with the manual rope pull twine activator. The electric twine control kit can be used with a tractor that has only one hydraulic valve. Wholegoods Kit - BK51065 Estimated Installation Time – 2.5 Hrs. 14
FEATURES AND BENEFITS CHALLENGER® RB34 ROUND BALER Fire Extinguisher Kit Due to the flammable nature of hay crops, it is advisable to purchase a fire extinguisher and mount it in a convenient location on the baler. A 2½ gallon stored pressure water fire extinguisher with mounting bracket, hardware, and complete instructions is included in the kit. Wholegoods Kit - BK50556 Estimated Installation Time – 0.5 Hr. 15
