We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and trust in MSU. None of the great news outlined in this Report is possible without your support and kindness! MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT STEVEN SHIRLEY he past year has truly been unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly impacted our society in so many ways, and that impact has certainly been felt at Minot State University as well. Despite the many disruptions and continuing challenges caused by the virus, one constant has been the ongoing efforts to succeed by our students, faculty, and staff. You will learn about a number of important milestones and initiatives throughout this President’s Report. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and trust in MSU. None of the great news outlined in this Report is possible without your support and kindness!
2019-20 has created remarkable change across the MSU landscape and set the stage for more changes ahead: in November we announced a $1 million gift from Roger and Ann Looyenga to establish new academic programs in Leadership; we held a ribbon-cutting last fall to unveil the $2.2 million renovation of the MSU Dome; we are in the midst of a $1.5 million fundraising effort to renovate the MSU Summer Theatre Amphitheater, including a recent generous challenge matching gift of $500,000 for this project from the Minot Area Community Foundation; we added several new academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in important fields creating new opportunities for current and future students; and a Student Emergency Fund campaign supported our students in responding to the initial financial impacts from COVID-19. Indeed, in so many ways a year unlike any other, but MSU responded, adapted, and thrived thanks to your generosity. For the fifth consecutive fiscal year, over $3 million was raised through your kindness. In fact, $3.8 million was raised this past year, representing a 16% increase over last year. Notable within this year’s giving was an all-time record to our Annual Excellence Appeal in excess of $540,000, a 36% increase over last year’s previous record. We also added 24 new endowed scholarships, meaning there are now 371 endowments providing important financial support to our students pursuing their academic dreams. You can review all of the fundraising highlights on pages 4-5 of this Report. A final important note, you will see the MSU Development Foundation’s asset base is now approaching $38 million, a 1 224% increase during the past decade. None of these incredible successes are possible without your President’s Report 2019-20 dedication, support, and belief in Minot State, our mission, and our students. THANK YOU! Looking a bit further ahead, we are now in the early planning stages for the 2021 Legislative Session — that Session will help determine our financial picture for the 2021-23 biennium that begins July 1, 2021. Without a doubt, we will have some challenges ahead. Uncertainty related to the ongoing COVID-19 response, coupled with North Dakota’s financial challenges due to instability in the energy and agricultural markets, means your support of MSU is as important now as ever. There are certainly some challenges ahead, but I am even more mindful and optimistic of the many opportu- nities and possibilities existing for MSU and our students thanks to each of you and your support. Finally, I would be remiss not mentioning the loss of two MSU giants during the past year. Last fall, longtime supporter and Foundation Board chair Maynard Sandberg passed away, and this spring long-time AD, coach, and supporter Wes Luther died. Both men are in the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame and both were recipients of the Golden Award, the highest honor bestowed by MSU’s Alumni Association. These two men bled the MSU red and green their entire adult lives, and I join many of you in missing their friendship and seeing them on campus. Rest in peace Maynard and Wes. Thank you for your continued support of Minot State University and our students, and thanks for taking the time to peruse this President’s Report. Thank you and as always, GO BEAVERS!

reating a named scholarship through the Minot State University Development Foundation assists students and leaves a legacy at Establishing a Scholarship The first step in establishing a scholarship is to determine whether you would like to establish an endowed scholarship or an annual scholarship: Minot State University. 10 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed scholarship funds are designed to be permanent and perpetual and can be It is also a President’s Report 2019-20 created with gifts totaling a minimum amount of $10,000 contributed in full at the outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until the endowment level of $10,000 is reached. The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made meaningful to a student(s). The principal remains untouched, so the endowment can last into perpetuity. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS way to honor Annual scholarships can be established with an outright gift of any amount. Unlike an endowed scholarship, an annual scholarship is not a permanent fund and is awarded only as long as you (or others) choose to contribute to the fund. family and As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the criteria. The Development Foundation staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. friends. Endowed and annual scholarships at Minot State are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, geographical origin, leadership potential, merit, financial need, academic achievement, or other criteria. Typically, a selection committee carefully reviews the scholarship applications submitted by students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria. Contributors of a scholarship fund are notified annually when the scholarship recipient(s) has been selected and are informed of the name, as well as the amount of the award. Recipients often write a thank you note to the donor, and in some cases, the recipient(s) and donor are able to meet.
