About us We make it easier for people to walk and cycle We are the charity that makes it easier for people to walk and cycle. We are engineers and educators, experts and advocates. We connect people and places, create liveable neighbourhoods, transform the school run and deliver a happier, healthier commute. Sustrans works in partnership, bringing people together to find the right solutions. We make the case for walking and cycling by using robust evidence and showing what can be done. We are grounded in communities and believe that grassroots support combined with political leadership drives real change, fast. We make it easier for people to walk and cycle because it leads to: • Happier, healthier people • Greener, better local environments • Stronger economies and communities 4
Zero Carbon London Location: London’s Inner Ring Road We envision the transformation of London’s Inner Ring Road into a sequence of city streets and high streets where the priority is shifted to cycling, walking, sitting, and relax- ing. Currently London’s Inner Ring road is characterised by heavy traffic, lack of cycling and walking facilities and poor air quality. The MTS aspires to tackle these issues in part through Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ). Combined with the reduction of vehicle numbers around London, the ULEZ will help free up space and provide opportunities for a healthier streetscape environment. We propose the space transformation as a strategic ap- proach through time by dividing the Inner Ring Road into 8 distinct sections that will be delivered over 4 specific time periods by 2041. Starting with Euston Road and Commer- cial Street, two areas in urgent need of change, we real- locate space by extending pavements, introducing cycle superhighway infrastructure, and creating linear parks. We give space for active frontages to spill out and create public space, leaving a limited width for electric vehicles only. Zero Carbon London aims to set high standards for all 10 Healthy Streets Indicators. The proposal was submitted as part of the TfL Architecture and Urbanism Panel 2 (ADUP2) bid. Community Street Design: Folkestone Gardens Location: LB Lewisham Responding to residents, the London Borough of Lewisham asked Sustrans to work together with the community to redesign the entrance to Folkestone Gardens from Woodpecker Road and make other improvements along Rolt Street. Through a collaborative design process, Sustrans engaged and listened to the community. We met with over seventy- five people who use and go through the park regularly, by holding two pop-up events in March 2017. We listened to how they thought the entrance could be improved and made safer for everyone, and also found that the majority of people who used the park arrived by foot or on bike. Over 50% of residents felt traffic speeds were fast or very fast and that it was not safe to cycle across Rolt Street and 45% of residents felt it was not safe to walk across Rolt Street. The proposed design imagines Rolt Street as an extension of Folkestone Gardens providing a pleasant and safe place for people to walk, cycle, sit, stay and play. The scheme is completely inspired by local community design ideas and the historical significance of the area that surrounds it. The oneway boulevard allows cars to pass through from the Childers Street junction towards Trundleys Road with design speeds set to 5mph. 8 View of Stanmore and Waddeck Rd
Community Street “It’s going to be much safer for the children Design: Richard Atkins to cross and the parents as well!” Esther, Parent of a child at Richard Atkins Primary School Location: Brixton, Lambeth In July 2015 Lambeth Transport Team commissioned Sustrans to tackle parent and resident complaints about New Park Road. Sustrans collaboratively designed a radical traffic calming scheme to reduce traffic speed and volume, making a healthier street environment for all. Our co- design process resulted in: 30% reduction in the number of HGVs using the street 27% reduction in speed 14% reduction in the volume of traffic 14 trees planted Street Trial New Park Rd view 10

Community Street Design: Marks Gate Location: LB Barking & Dagenham Sustrans delivered an innovative two-year project on a London housing estate which combined community-led street design and behaviour change work with the aim of improving opportunities for walking and cycling. The project set-out to address a number of challenges in the area, such as a car-dominated environment, low levels of cycling, poor mental and physical health indicators and a lack of community empowerment. The £250k project delivered 145 events with a throughput of 7000 residents, involving a programme of community engagement, area scoping, co-design workshops and the delivery of finalised concept designs. Among the interventions were traffic-calming measures, place-making features, cycle storage installation and alterations to school entrances to enable safer walking and cycling. This was combined with active travel initiatives in schools and the wider community in order to complement the infrastructure work. The project set up a cycle training programme with a throughput of 4000 children and adults. Initial findings from our monitoring suggest that the addition of behaviour change work has encouraged more people to get involved in the design process and led to greater support for the final changes made.
