Addressing the media at the briefing held at the Government Communication and Information Systems headquarters on 20 March 2020, Minister Cele highlighted that new regulations, especially section 10, empowered him to issue directions to address, prevent and combat the spread of Covid-19 in all provinces, police precincts and holding cells. “I have directed the management of the SAPS to implement measures that will see all members, particularly those who are in close contact with different communities who visit our police stations, provided with maximum protection against possible infection of the Coronavirus,” he said. Minister Cele said the police have already procured protective gloves and hand sanitisers for police stations and holding cells.
