Acknowledgement: To our previous president, Jacqui Stokes, and secretary, Lynda Mowat. They have both done excellent work for the club and we thank them very much. Jacqui has instigated some new ideas, and has worked with online new members, bringing them up to date. She has shown enthusiasm and willingness to continue with her Skills nights. Lynda has been a really good secretary for the last 4 years. She has an attention to detail, and we have been very appreciative of her exceptional work. Congratulations: Firstly, to our new president, Kay Goosen-Cooper and secretary, Margaret Liddell, voted in at the AGM. Secondly to Val Fabling, who has achieved her LPSNZ. LPSNZ (Licentiate of the Photographic Society of NZ) is an Honours distinction which confirms a level of photographic competence demonstrated through a portfolio presentation of a member’s work. Thirdly, the club came third for the Wiltshire Digital Image Cup. This cup was first donated in 1947 as a memorial to Ernest Edward Wiltshire of the Christchurch Photographic Society. It requires a set of four digital images from each club. Our entry is below. TOPIC NOTES April: Geometry Think of photographing shapes; triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, circles, rhombus’ etc. There should be at least one in your photograph, and it / they should be the focus of your picture. A clearly defined geometrical shape, like a building is considered hard geometry. These sorts of geometrical shapes will mostly be manmade, because of the hard edges. They’re also easy to spot once you start looking for geometrical shapes. Soft geometry is a roughly defined geometrical shape, like a trimmed hedge. The edges aren’t as stark as hard geometrical shapes. So, of course, you’ll find more soft geometry for photography in nature. Because the shapes aren’t as obvious, you have to look more carefully, until you get used to thinking in shapes rather than objects. For example, start seeing mountain peaks and the converging edges of roads as triangles or doorways, arches and an alley between buildings as a rectangle to frame a subject A positive shape is what we think of first when we think of a shape. A positive shape is the shape made by an object. A negative space is the space leftover — or where the objects in the photo aren’t. A negative space is the crack in a canyon wall, for example, or a shape created from the outline of two positive spaces. Middle Earth – Mary Lorier Penguin Pool – Val Fabling April 2021
May: Colour on Colour ‘Black on black’ or ’white on white’ themes are common types of photograph but this set subject allows ‘red on red’, ‘blue on blue’, etc. For example ‘green on green’ if you have photographed fern fronds in front of each other or grass. So it is the lighting and shading rather than different colours which make the photograph. The colour must be original, which disallows tinting or conversion from colour to black and white. Any colour other than the main colour is discouraged but may be incidental, for example, a black dog on black background may have brown eyes. April 27th: Drewery Cup Photojournalism Award 1.NUMBERS and THEME: The cup will be awarded for the best image, or for a set of not less than three (3) or more than six (6) images in the same media. Sets must illustrate a specific theme. 2.SIZE: Prints may be of any size, and may be attached collectively to a single mount of any shape, but not exceeding 40cm x 50cm (16” x 20”). The mount may be arranged so as to fold. 3.DIGITAL IMAGES: Digital images must conform to the WPS specifications i.e. maximum width 1620 pixels , maximum height 1080 pixels 4.CAPTIONS: Each set must be clearly captioned, indicating its theme. 5.STANDARD: Entries will be judged to a high standard and no award will be made in any year if, in the opinion of the judge, a sufficient standard has not been reached. 6.REPETITION: If two images in a set are so similar as to be considered by the judge as repetition inconsistent with the theme, the second image shall be disregarded when assessing the set.
