Source: WGSN History of the Trend Disquieting designs offer escapism and opulence in dark times Rates of depression and anxiety are running high globally, and mindsets are shifting to prioritise physical and emotional safety. On a broader level, eco-anxiety (chronic worry about the implications of global warming) is becoming more widely recognised as a legitimate ailment. As a result, people are seeking solace in alternative realities, from gaming and digital platforms to horror– a study by British statistician Stephen Follows found that horror is the fastest growing genre of recent times. For beauty, look to horror for product inspiration and use colours and textures that have a dreamlike and otherworldly quality. Colour cosmetics with transformative effects will be important, blurring the lines between real and fantasy. Aspects
1. Embrace the dark side:
A focus on escapism and alternative realities in times of
uncertainty will see horror-infused themes gain ground
particularly with the youth market. Combine metallic
details and colours with the darks for dramatic effect,
creating a mix that is unsettling and enticing. Mystical
references will also continue to build.
2. Instill a minimalist message in
everything from biker to goth looks.
Redefine history:
A continued focus on ‘old meets new' styling will see minimalist
and maximalist silhouettes merge. S/S 21's gothic styling will
continue to influence fashion, allowing for an easy flow of
transseasonal products in a monochrome palette. Themes of
