MEDICAL INFO Running is a fun and easy way to stay healthy and your health is our paramount concern. This is why we have put this section in your instructions to ensure you have a fun and enjoyable race. CURRENT HEALTH Many people run everyday without issue, but it is important that you talk to your doctor if you have current ongoing health concernsbefore taking part in a competitive sport like this weekend. Running can aggravate ongoing conditions like Asthma, Diabetes or Heart Problems. MEDICATION AND PAINKILLERS You should also be very careful to avoid NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) medications whilst training and running. Drugs such as larger doses of aspirin, voltarol (diclofenac), ibuprofen (e.g Nurofen) and naproxen can cause kidney problems when combined with high intensity exercise, and in very rare cases can affect bowel function. This also applies to the use of creams for pain relief such as voltarol and ibuleve. If pain relief is required, please use paracetamol instead. Please discuss running the event with your GP if you take any of these medications regularly. Finally, drugs to dry up runny noses, which contain drugs such as pseudoephedrine or oxymetazoline, can increase your blood pressure and interfere with the heart’s electrical circuitry and so should be avoided for a few days prior to the event and not taken whilst training. Stimulants of any kind should not be used. Again, for any questions, please consult your GP. WEATHER It is really useful to spend the money on the correct running wear; weather related conditions such as Hyperthermia and Hypothermia can occur if the right precautions are not taken. Overheating and heat stroke is the most common medical issue at running events. Ensure you check the weather and dress accordingly. Don’t overdress at 0700 and expect it to stay that cold all day! www.bedfordrunfest.co.uk info.bedfordrunningfestival@gmail.com
MEDICAL INFO HYDRATION Ensure you plan the fluid intake you require; drinking too much or too little are both as dangerous. Take the time to work out how much fluid you have required during your training. Ensure if using supplements that you follow and read the manufacture guidance (please don’t take them on the day if you have never taken them before). For more information, please see hydration page later in this document. FEELING UNWELL? If you wake up and feel under the weather, whilst we cannot stop you from taking part, it is important to listen to your body and consider if you should. If you already have diarrhea and vomiting it is strongly recommended you stay at home! If you feel yourself getting confused or too hot, or very weak, this may be a sign of heat stroke and you must stop immediately and get help from one of the medical team. Heat stroke is a very serious condition. Those that suffer severe consequences are those that don’t listen to their body saying stop. SUMMARY Please take care and listen to your body Make sure you train properly, following a good training plan well ahead of race day Consult your GP if you have any medical problems or are taking medications. If you are feeling unwell before the race, DO NOT run If you become unwell during the race, stop and seek medical advice at the nearest first aid station Avoid taking NSAID medications / painkillers on race day Drink sensibly during the race and do not take too much or too few fluids Consult the manufacturers advice on consuming energy drinks or gels If you feel unwell after the race, seek advice www.bedfordrunfest.co.uk info.bedfordrunningfestival@gmail.com
HYDRATION Ensure you plan the fluid intake you require, drinking too much or too little are both as dangerous. Take the time to work out how much fluid you have required during your training. Ensure if using supplements that you follow and read the manufacture’s guidance (please don’t take them on the day if never taken before). HYDRATION LEVELS It is particularly important for marathon finishers to check hydration levels. Simple ways to measure your need for fluids is to check your weight and keep track of how much you are urinating. It is common to lose a few pounds of water weight during the marathon and therefore it is important to know your weight just before the race. If you have lost 2-5% (example 2% of 150lbs = 3lbs) then you have lost fluid and may be dehydrated. If you are urinating and have no symptoms then you should continue to take sips of sports drinks and water every 15-20 minutes. Once your urine is clear and you are urinating freely, stop taking sips and drink only when thirsty. www.bedfordrunfest.co.uk info.bedfordrunningfestival@gmail.com
