Prior to his time with the NCSA, Fore served as the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support and Development at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz., from 2013-15. There he worked with more than 450 students in 22 sports implementing a system for assessing at-risk student athletes and creating a “welcome back” orientation program. His efforts, including the academic and community service reward pro- gram called the Lopes Cup, helped to significantly raise the GPA of student-athletes at the university. Fore was the Athletic Director at Mesa Community College from 2008-2010. During his time with the Thunder- birds, MCC teams won five ACCAC titles and a pair of Division I region championships His career has also been marked by successful basketball programs, beginning after his playing days at the Uni- versity of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T), beginning his coaching career at Arkansas State University as an assistant coach in 1988 and continuing from 1990-1993 at then-Central Missouri State (now UCM). It was only the second winning season in school history to that point. His winning percentage and total wins mark was finally eclisped in the 2019-20 school year. In all, Fore brings 302 coaching wins, two high school state championships, six international gold medals, two silvers and four bronze medals on the basketball court, as well as administrative experience that will help guide the Buccaneers into the future. Fore resides in Laveen, Arizona, with his wife, Shannon, and his five children, Cameron, Justin, Zachary, Preston and Addison.
7 ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION KARIN GADBERRY ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Karin Gadberry began as Park University Gilbert’s head softball and women’s cross country coach in 2018, tasked with building the two programs for competition in the 2019-20 academic year. She was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director Head Softball coach in November 2019. The inaugural 2020 season was cut short due to the global pandemic in which the Buccaneers finished the season with a 7-14 record. The program picked up the first win against Bene- dictine-Mesa and won its first ever historical game against Park (Mo.) at the Sterling Softball Scramble tournament Gadberry was the volunteer assistant softball coach at Grand Canyon University for the 2018 season where she worked primarily with the catchers helping the Lopes to a runner up finish at the WAC Conference tournament. Prior to her time at GCU she served as the senior woman administrator and head softball coach at New Mexico Highlands University. At New Mexico Highlands, the Cowgirls made the RMAC Conference tournament two times (2015, 2017) in her four seasons at the helm. Prior to their first visit in 2015, the Cowgirls had not made post season play in 10 years. In 2015, the RMAC Summit Award was given for the first time ever to a Highlands softball player. In addition, during her time with the Cowgirls she served as the Co-Interim Director of Athletics in 2015 overseeing sports as well as the strength and condi- tioning and sports information offices, advising the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, as well as serving on several committees across the campus. She joined the Cowgirls from West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virginia, where she was the head coach of the Golden Bears for the three seasons (2011-2013). During her time at WVU Tech, she led the Golden Bears to a school record 29 wins in 2012. Under Gadberry’s leadership, the team’s grade point average improved every year, following her high standards of dedication and leadership on the field and in the classroom. She left as the all-time leader in wins as a head coach for the Golden Bear softball program with 62 victories in three years. Her 2013 team made the school’s first ever appearance in the USCAA College World Series and finished in fifth place. Gadberry is a native of Puyallup, Washington, and graduated from Sumner High School in 2001. After high school, she signed to play softball for NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, a member of the Southland Conference. Gadberry was one of the best power hitters and catchers in Southeastern’s history. A four-year letter winner with the Lions, Gadberry set records in single season and career home runs, slugging percentage, walks, extra base hits, career RBI’s and holds the longest hitting streak in school history. Three times she was named to the Louisiana All-State Softball team and was a two-time Southland All-Conference catcher. In September 2019 Gadberry was elected into the Southeastern Louisiana Athletic Hall of Fame, becoming the 5th softball player to do so joining former teammates Sarah Gascon and Rachel Ray. Gadberry became an assistant coach at Southeastern after completing her bachelor’s degree in Health and Kinesiology. She began as the strength and conditioning coach for the Lions’ women athletes while coaching with the softball program. During her five years as an assistant at Southeastern, she developed the skills to establish and manage a winning program. Her role as a strength and conditioning coach helped her form an understanding of the dedication and discipline that is required of student-athletes to excel on and off the field. Gadberry sees this as a pillar of her softball programs and instills these tools in her student-athletes, as exemplified by having coached an NFCA Scholar Athlete award winner and multiple All-Americans. She ensures that her players perform to high standards academically and that they participate in forming a bond with the community. Gadberry has won over a hundred games during her head coaching career. Gadberry finished her master’s degree in Organizational Leadership in 2012 from Columbia Southern University. She is a 2013 NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy graduate, a 2014 IAA West Women Leaders in College Sports graduate, and is a member of the NFCA, Alliance of Women’s Coaches and the Women Leaders in College Sports organization. Karin is married to Alex Gadberry and they have a 6 year old son Alex Jr and reside in Mesa.
9 2021 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK The 2021 seasons marks a slate of exciting opportunities for the Park University Gilbert men’s soccer team. Head coach Jonas Tanzer will have his first uninterrupted chance to execute a gameplan and implement a recruiting class of his own featuring a dozen athletes from Queen Creek, Ariz. to London, U.K. This season also marks the first time all of Park Gil- bert’s athletics programs will be eligible for the Cal Pac and NAIA playoffs. When the Park University Gilbert men’s soccer team won just one game in their inaugural season, it was difficult to imag- ine that they would be contenders for a Cal Pac playoff spot in the near future, but the Buccaneers 3-3 record in 2020 gave plenty of reason for optimism. The quick turnaround is a testament to the culture shift experienced by the Bucs since Tan- zer assumed head coaching duties last January. In just a few months, much of the same squad from the inaugural season competed with and defeated some of the Cal Pac’s best teams. Forwards Nicklaus Sullivan, Eduardo Lazaro and Johnny Perez, who combined for seven goals last season and all earned All-Conference honors, will be joined by an impressive group of newcomers, including NCAA Division II transfer Johnny Baros (Eastern New Mexico) and Danny Ramos (Queen Creek HS), who is expected to make an immediate impact at the forward position. The most emphasis in Tanzer’s 2021 recruiting class was placed on the midfield- where he added four athletes, the most of any position. Devan Jorgenson, who led his JUCO to the NJCAA playoffs, Bakersfield College transfer Angel Cervantes, All-Conference returner Johnny Perez and Connor Donnellan (St. James Catholic HS) are expected to lead the charge with Andrew Gomez, who also earned an All-Conference nod last season, will also have a key role in the midfield. Defensively, the Buccaneers were sound last season. Led by All-Conference members Victor and Osvaldo Sanchez, they gave up two or fewer goals in all six games- a feat they only reached once in the season prior. Joining them are two JUCO standouts, Uriel Herrera (Bakersfield College) out wide and Ame Imina (Orange Coast College), putting the Buccaneers in prime position to double-down on their impressive defensive performance in 2020-21. The goalkeeper position will feature some depth unprecedented to Buccaneers soccer. Gabriel MacIntosh (Helix Charter HS), a three-time CIF Scholar Athlete, is slated to start in the net with Adrian Matus (Cibola HS), Michael Cicogna (Ran- cho Mirage HS) and Ryan Shufelt, one of a handful of third-year Buccaneers on the squad, will also have an opportunity to earn time in goal. Most of last year’s roster is returning, including the six All-Conference members, but as the Buccaneers eye their first Cal Pac playoff berth in program history, many schools who opted out last season due to the pandemic are returning to play this season and pose an additional hurdle to their postseason hopes. On the docket, the Buccaneers have seven non-conference matchups to start the season. Before getting their conference schedule underway, the team will travel to California for a non-conference matchup with Bethesda and face their neigh- bors to the west, Arizona Christian on Sep. 4. Their toughest tests before conference play will be two matches against Ottawa (Ariz.), who received votes toward the national standings and lost last season’s GSAC championship to Westmont in the final minute of play. The conference schedule includes Embry-Riddle, Soka, California Marymount and Westcliff, who all return to play this season. They also play Saint Katherine twice- a team the Bucs earned two wins against last season and have their first matchup ever with Sierra Nevada, but their biggest hurdles come against Benedictine Mesa and Simpson; the latter edged out the former for the top seed in the Cal Pac last season, but it was Benedictine Mesa who came out on top in the confer- ence tourament before losing to the eventual champions UC-Merced. The Bucs split the season series with Benedictine Mesa last season. The Cal Pac playoffs are scheduled to begin on Wed. November 10 and will wrap up that Saturday.
10 2021 WOMEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK With a new head coach at the helm, a talented batch of new athletes and a battle-tested group of returners, the Park University Gilbert women’s soccer team is set to usher in a new era of the program. After a win- less and pandemic-delayed 2020-21 season, this new group enter their first full season in program history as members of the Cal Pac and seek to make their presence as a viable threat known. Hartley, who was officially hired in April, made the most of his first four and a half months on the job. He added nine athletes to his 2021 class; several of them are expected to make immediate impacts on the pitch. Among those expected to quickly make an impact are defenders Galilea Medina (Fallbrook Union HS) and Payton Simspon (Queen Creek HS); they’ll join Destiny Tacey, one of just two seniors on the young Bucca- neers squad and Halah Harris out wide. The lone goalkeeper on the roster, Lizbeth Medina, who has started almost every game at goalkeeper since the Buccaneers’ inaugural season, will be relied upon in the net. Alondra Castro, who appeared in all six games last season, will also have an opportunity to make an impact. On a team that has a whopping 14 freshmen, the midfield will be by far the most experienced group. The midfielders are led by Alison Washatka, who came to Park Gilbert last season after she helped Chan- dler-Gilbert CC earn a NJCAA playoff berth and Jenifer Gonzales, a transfer from Dodge City CC and the lone JUCO transfer of Hartley’s 2021 recruiting class. Rounding out an experience bunch is freshman Maddie Gomes (Cherokee Trail HS). Hallie Thompson, one of just a handful of third-year Bucs, as well as sophomore Alexis Zavala and Gaby Pinzon (Eaglecrest HS) will also stand to take some pressure off the midfielders. Expected to start at the forward position are freshman Hallie Benson (Alta HS) and returners Alexa Favela and Vanessa Miller. Favela, who played in all six games last season and Miller, a member of the inaugural Buccaneers squad, will play on the with Benson in the middle. Rounding out the squad are freshmen forwards Kelsey Anderson (Smith-Cotton HS), Alexandria Thomas (Pebble Hills HS) and Josie Perez (Cholla HS). As they set their sights on turning around the program, the Buccaneers will face a few of the NAIA and Cal Pac’s finest teams. They open their season with a home match against The Master’s and a road game against Ottawa (Ariz.), who are both receiving votes toward the national standings before facing Arizona Christian. Conference play features two matches against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), who are returning to play after opting out last season due to COVID and also received votes toward the national standings; they will also have two matches each against Saint Katherine and Benedictine Mesa, who accounted for three of the Bucs six losses last season. However, the Bucs’ best performance of the 2020-21 season also came against Benedic- tine Mesa, in which they took the Redhawks to a 0-0 overtime draw. The Cal Pac playoffs are scheduled to begin on Wed. November 10 and will wrap up that Saturday.
