Describe the weather conditions in areas where air rises (2 marks) Describe the weather conditions in areas where air descends (2 marks)
Suggest how Figure 2 supports the idea that there will be an increase in tropical storms in the future (3 Marks)
Hurricanes are scary freaks of nature. The storms pass with such intensity bringing torrential rain and very strong winds over 75 miles an hour. Both of these conditions can cause severe problems. Hail can be as big as footballs, and the thunder and lightning is out of a horror film. Driving through such a storm, gives you a real thrill, a life and death thrill. Compare this to the calm, clear eye of the storm and you can see why I love to see the ever changing weather conditions of a hurricane. Carl Frampton – A British Storm Junkie Using the source above list 4 weather conditions associated with hurricanes (4 Marks)
Identify 2 features from figure 4 which would suggest the satellite image is of a tropical storm (2 marks)
PREDICTION Give 2 ways that tropical storms be predicted (2 marks) 1. We are actually very good at predicting tropical storms as we can see them form on satellite images like the one above. 2. Measuring wind direction we can then see what path they could take. 3. Planes will also fly over the hurricane to measure the intensity (anemometer)
` 1. Is there a relationship between hurricane strength and the number of people that die use evidence to support (4 Marks) 2. Give and explain two reasons why the cost of damage from Hurricane Katrina was higher than that Typhoon Mirinae. (4 Marks)
Suggest 2 primary (or secondary) impacts of tropical storms (4 Marks) Primary effects: Secondary effects:
Explain how immediate (or long term) responses to tropical storms can reduce the damage (4 Marks) Immediate responses Long-term responses
Case study – Hurricane Katrina Immediate response: Primary effects: Long term responses: Secondary effects:

‘The UK’s weather is becoming more extreme’ discuss Evidence????: But is this evidence????:
UK weather hazard Boscastle The Boscastle flood, 16th August 2004 Boscastle is situated on the North Cornwall coast. For a hundred years the village was a thriving port but the coming of the railways soon saw its decline as a trading port. About 90% of Boscastle’s economy is now reliant on tourism. On Monday 16th August 2004 major flooding occurred in North Cornwall. The small village of Boscastle was devastated.
UK weather hazard Boscastle What were the causes of the Boscastle Flood? 1. Climatic conditions were the main reason for the floods in Boscastle. 2. Remnants of Hurricane Alex, sent a deep low pressure system across the Atlantic, picking up moisture 3. 200mm fell over Ottersham Moor, to the east of Boscastle, within a 4 hour period. 4. This was combined with coastal winds and a rising tide. 5. The ground was also already saturated from previous rainfall events.
