Introduction judging Panel 2020 A huge thank you to the expert OPT Awards Judging Panel, who enjoyed Oxford Preservation Trust 2020 visiting all the projects submitted before engaging in an interesting and lively debate to reach their decisions at the panel meeting. OPT was established nearly a century ago and the OPT Awards are themselves almost 50 years old. But, in all that time, we have never seen anything like 2020. Rev Prof William Whyte, Professor of Social and Architectural History The impact of the pandemic could be felt in our socially distanced judging. It can be at St John’s College, Chair of the Faculty of History traced in our postponed awards ceremony. It is, of course, present in the fact we’re and Chairman of OPT meeting virtually. Everything, in a sense, is different. Dr Geoffrey Tyack, Architectural Historian and OPT Trustee But however different the form of the Awards may seem, its function remains the Mrs Liz Woolley, Local Historian and Author same. OPT was established to preserve the best of the old, to encourage the best Mr John Stevenson, Architect and former Oxford Brookes University Lecturer of the new, and to educate people about the city of Oxford and its surroundings. Our Awards are an important part of this, as we seek to recognize the finest new Prof Elizabeth McKellar, Architectural Historian and Author buildings and the most exemplary efforts to preserve older structures. This year, Mrs Carole Souter, Master of St Cross College and OPT Trustee with the new Green Award, we also celebrate those projects which demonstrate Miss Alice Purkiss, National Trust Partnership Lead, University of Oxford excellent work towards sustainability. It has been a delight to see so many entries this year. Despite the difficulties Mrs Georgina Hamshaw, MSc Historic Conservation student at Oxford Brookes posed in 2020, there have been a great many projects working hard to help bring Mrs Debbie Dance, Director of OPT Oxford to life. In this, the 43rd year of the OPT Awards, we considered forty-five competitors, eventually awarding eight plaques and fifteen certificates to a striking variety of projects. None of this would have been possible without the support of our sponsors, Carter Jonas, Critchleys and Mathews Comfort. I am immensely grateful to them, to the OPT team, and to all those whose hard work and creativity is celebrated here. The Rev Prof William Whyte Chairman of the Awards Panel www.oxfordpreservation.org.uk
