Oxford and District HF Rambling Club www.oxford-hf-rambling.org.uk associated with HF holidays Newsletter Spring 2021 From the chair I hope this finds everyone well and feeling a bit more optimistic now that many of us have had at least one vaccine dose, restrictions are easing, and spring is here even though the temperature still feels like winter! It was good to start group walks again after Easter and we had a record number of walkers for the first walk so everyone is clearly raring to go. My only consolation for not being able to walk through the winter was that the rain, wind, snow, fog and mud would have made walks quite challenging on occasion! Usually the newsletter is a balance between reflecting on events over the previous six months and a look ahead to the next. However, there’s nothing much to look back on this time, although we did at least have our Christmas walk. This issue is therefore very much about looking forward, with various events planned including an autumn weekend away. Mindful of the lack of social events last year, we’ve tried to plan some flexible walks with options for non walkers to join for refreshments etc. Planning six months ahead still has uncertainties, and we may have to confirm details of some events nearer the time, but I sincerely hope that this time we’ll be able to carry out the programme without interruption. Sue Pemberton Autumn Weekend by the sea, 15 - 18 October 2021 Following the success of last Autumn weekend at the Premier Inn in Christchurch, the committee has decided on using another Premier Inn, this time located at Polegate, Eastbourne. Premier Inn are very flexible with their booking terms, cancellations and additions, and given the uncertainties due to Covid 19, this flexibility is very useful. Their prices are very reasonable too. The location is good, close to the South Downs National Park and only a short journey to the seaside. It should provide us with excellent walking opportunities. There should be plenty of attractions nearby if you decide not to walk. The Seven Sisters A booking form for the holiday is being sent out with this mailing. Trevor Jennings

If you don't fancy walking, just meet us at the windmill for tea, at 3pm. Sylvia Lymbery Sadly, I have to pass on the news that Sylvia Lymbery has died. She had been a member for quite a few years, enjoyed the evening walks with the club, during the Summer months and often joined us for social events. She suffered a severe bout of Pneumonia, a few years ago and was unable to walk very far after that. I am told that she was a regular contributor to the 'letters' in the Oxford Times and was very distressed by Brexit ! I understand that she lived in Italy at one time and retained a great affection for it. I have included below, a few words from Lilia Bonacorsi, a former club member, whom Sylvia became friends with, following an evening walk. Julia I remember with fondness the visit to the Iffley village open gardens, our dinners together, the Italian movie we watched at the TOIA and our chats about Italy. We didn't see each other much but when we did, we made the most of our time together. Goodbye my dear Sylvia, you'll be sorely missed! Lilia
Spring Weekend 2022 - third time lucky 1 - 4 April, Selworthy Once again, our Spring weekend has not been able to go ahead because of lockdown. We have agreed with HF to postpone the booking for Holnicote House until Friday 1st - Monday 4th April 2022 at no extra cost. If you have already booked for this year, the booking will be carried over to Spring weekend 2022. If you are unable to make the new date and have already booked, then contact me to arrange a refund. Holnicote House As we have already had a number of cancellations, (two of which have been filled) there may be further opportunities to book a place if you are not currently booked. At the moment we have one single room available. Let me know if you wish to come on the weekend. I have tried to push HF to make further single places available to us, but they say there is currently no availability, however there are plenty of doubles/twins (not for single occupation) if we wish to take some of these. Trevor Jennings The dramatic North Devon coast Reports Christmas Lunch 2020 On Saturday 19th December, we met at Rye Farm car park in Abingdon for a morning walk followed by some Festive Fare. Our route took us through the Abbey Gardens, and out to Radley Lakes. We completed a circuit of the lake, in spite of a few muddy patches, and returned along the harder ground of the cycle track. Crossing over the lock, we walked back through the meadows - at which point, a sudden heavy shower overtook us. Fortunately it passed over quickly, and we were able to make our way to the riverbank to enjoy mulled wine and mince pies - not our usual Christmas lunch, but a pleasant and sociable occasion nevertheless, Claire Drinkwater
Lockdown snapshots I think everyone found the latest lockdown the hardest, I know I did. We had some awful weather, the days were dark and most of the news seemed bad. I tried to get out for a walk every day, but ‘staying local’ became a challenge when most of ‘local’ disappeared under water! I must admit to driving to higher ground on occasion. However, most walks brought flashes of joy and the realisation that, whatever the weather, it’s good to get out. A walk round the Baldons in January produced a wonderful view from the churchyard in Toot Baldon. The aconites and snowdrops were beautiful too. Quite early in January I went for a walk one frosty morning and was struck by the beauty of frosted teasels. A bit further on, catkins were blooming already, a sign of spring on the way. One Sunday morning we woke to a light covering of snow and neighbours produced a wonderful socially-responsible snowman! February brought more floods. Here’s where some of us enjoyed refreshments after the Christmas walk! Most of the walk was well under water. On one February morning the fog was rather slower to clear than forecast as I walked down the cycle track that goes towards Sutton Courtenay. However, the trees looming out of the mist and reflected in the flooded fields were starkly beautiful. March arrived, and we enjoyed some warm sunny weather at the beginning of the month. One day I ventured over to Basildon Park as it is my place of (voluntary) work and was greatly cheered by the swathes of daffodils. The worst of the winter was over, and the ‘roadmap’ offered hope ahead. Sue Pemberton
