Outside In Outside In is a vibrant exhibition that reflects our founding vision “The art really lifts to provide those in our care with a connection from the hospital to the spirit of the the outside world. Art works provide opportunities for reflection and contemplation, and engage memory and recognition, inspiration and hospital” motivation. This year across both St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane and Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital, 43 artists and groups are exhibiting art works reflecting the Outside In theme, through depicting encounters with people, places and experiences beyond the hospital itself. In 2018, over 600 artworks will be loaned from 43 artists and groups for exhibition throughout St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane and Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital. We encourage sales of these art works and a 20% commission will help us develop our Arts Program further. If you are interested in purchasing an art work, please visit our main reception. For further information on our Arts Program, or if you are interested in exhibiting in future, please contact Fiona Forrest, Arts Program Curator, at fiona.forrest@svha.org.au St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane and Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital are part of the St Vincent’s Health Australia group. Cathy Gilday Cathy finds inspiration in the everyday, from many different avenues, and her creativity is inspired by personal experiences. She paints in a style that allows her to express her feelings and emotions – predominantly in a semi- abstract or abstract style, and in some cases verging on the surreal. The majority of Cathy’s works begin with simple charcoal lines and are then continued with acrylic paint. However, she enjoys the use of a mixture of mediums and she is always open to experimentation with new techniques and products. To create depth and tonal value, Cathy uses multiple coloured glazed layers in her paintings, which is a slow but Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital rewarding process. Cathy has been involved in many group exhibitions across South East Queensland and is currently a finalist in the Art Lovers Australia 2018 Art Prize on the Gold Coast. Donna’s watercolour paintings mostly focus on cat-like characters, a naturally outdoor animal, and places them in human clothing, along with magic-realistic situations. The characters and their interactions within the paintings are open to interpretation, but commonly convey internal healing in a hurt world. Many of these situations concern growth, energy, and our animalistic connection to the Earth. As a current business/fine art student, Donna enjoys creating new art pieces in her free time, combined with her creative writing experience. She also creates for educational purposes when the opportunity presents itself. Much of Donna’s original work consists of watercolour art and illustrations, and comic-style art. She also designs her own t-shirts and postcards, using original illustrations combined with creative writing. She paints in a contemporary, Indigenous style, mostly using acrylics on either canvas, timber, furniture, walls, concrete... “I try to paint what I cannot express in words. The feelings of hope, love, overcoming obstacles, family stories, challenges. I paint from my heart, from my spiritual place, and I use Baayami (God) to help me. When I have to think about a painting, I lie down on the couch, (push the dogs off!) and close my eyes. I wait till my breathing has calmed and my eyes are still and I say, ‘so God, what are we going to paint’ … and he tells me, I listen, we paint,” she says. Wendy’s first Outside In exhibition was at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, and her work is part of the hospital’s permanent collection. 2017 was an exciting and busy year for Wendy, as she completed art workshops and large scale murals in schools and neighbourhood centres. Lindsay Farrell “Camino” (Spanish for “the way”) denotes a pilgrim walking route. Lindsay’s exhibition Noosa Camino is a series of images and reflections developed while walking in the Noosa National Park. The images relate to Christian Spirituality and the path that Jesus walked. These images of places in the Noosa National Park become stations for reflection and allude to the local place, prayer and the Christian story. The Noosa National Park holds stories that are from the sacred dreaming of the first Australians. The Noosa Camino series seeks to respect those stories. Lindsay Farrell was Associate Professor in Art at the Australian Catholic University for 24 years until his Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital retirement in 2017. He has a PhD from Griffith University in Art Education and Spirituality. His work involves practice, teaching and research in visual art. It engages the social, ethical and religious dimensions of life and includes collaborative projects with the Queensland Art Gallery and Block 2, 2018 art in health. In 2012 he was a Smithsonian Scholar in Washington DC. He was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Citation (2010) and the ACU Community Engagement Award 2009. He has lectured in Art and Spirituality in UK, Canada, USA and Australia. He has also had over 25 solo art exhibitions overseas and in Australia. Abramo Papp In his third Outside In exhibition, Abramo presents a collection of works from the Southern Moreton Bay region. His works range from oil and acrylic painting on canvas, to watercolours and acrylics on canvas paper. Abramo’s new work consciously makes greater use of colour, rather than just reproducing the world as we see normally it. Abramo is a retired architect who has re-ignited his passion for painting which started in his teens. Since returning to his art in 2006, water has been a constant source of inspiration for his works mainly because he found that sailing and being on or near the water was the only pastime which truly relaxed him and took his mind off the stresses of work. While gazing over water his mind would naturally drift into a meditative state, reflecting on his inner-most thoughts and feelings. His aim is for the viewer to experience these same calming and reflective states as they gaze upon his works. www.abramopapp.com.au Exhibition location: ground floor, ward GA 30 Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane Outside In Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane Outside In 31
