INSPIRE Two-time Oscar nominee and five-time Grammy award- winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard will unite his internationally acclaimed band The E-Collective with the Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet to open our 58th Season. Blanchard comes to Kansas City after opening the 2021—2022 season of the Metropolitan Opera to great acclaim with Orquestra Sinfônica do his opera Fire Shut Up In My Bones. The Series continues to provide rare artistic experiences for Kansas City audiences, and to be the first to bring these performances to you. This orchestral performance marks three debuts for Kansas City: the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo’s debut in Kansas City, the first time the Villa-Lobos Harmonica Concerto will be performed in the city, and the highly anticipated debut of Marin Alsop on a Kansas City conductor’s podium. 3 4

With her magnetic charm, acclaimed operatic and solo performances worldwide, and a critically lauded discography, she has quickly become one of the brightest stars of the classical music world. Since making her professional operatic debut, she has been seen on nearly all of the major stages of the world, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opéra National de Paris, Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and Staatspoer Berlin, to name a few. This season, Pretty Yende will be on her US tour and we are thrilled to welcome her to Kansas City for the first time as she makes her debut performance with the Series. Filharmonie Brno with Dennis Russell Davies, conductor and Laurie Anderson, soloist Saturday, February 18, 2023 Helzberg Hall, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts 7:00 PM MUSIC AND DANCE Take the ultimate flight of fancy with iconic creative pioneer Chicago Symphony Laurie Anderson as she channels Atchison, Kansas’ own Amelia Earhart in an expansive work for Filharmonie Brno Orchestra under the baton of renowned American conductor Dennis with music director Riccardo Muti Russell Davies. Earhart’s own radio transmissions, diaries, and news clippings are used in Anderson’s sweeping sonic and violinist Julia Fischer score that show off the technical capabilities of Helzberg Hall. The roots of the Filharmonie Brno go back to the 1870s when young Leoš Janáček endeavored to establish a Czech Sunday, February 26, 2023 symphony orchestra in Brno. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African American modern dancers, that performance forever changed the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents – and has reached millions more online and through television broadcasts and localized branches of the organization, like our local Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey.
