2021 Georgia 4-H Photo Contest! This contest is open to all 4-H'ers in 4th-12th grades and adults. Two photos may be submitted per participant under each of the five categories: 1. 4-H Agriculture and STEM 2. 4-H Healthy Living 3. 4-H Citizenship, Leadership, and Service 4. 4-H Volunteerism 5. 4-H Camp and Environmental Education Any photo entered into this contest must have been taken between August 1, 2020 - July 31, 2021, by the 4-H'er or adult submitting the photo. Full guidelines for each of these categories are outlined on the Georgia 4-H webpage (www.georgia4h.org/photo). Each selected photo will earn a $25.00 prize. All photos must be submitted by Wednesday, August 25, 2021. Photos should be submitted at the following website: tinyurl.com/4hphoto21 2021 Watermelon Growing Contest Kindergarten through 12th grade CONTEST RULES AND DEADLINE 1. All 4-H’ers (Kindergarten through 12th grade) are eligible to compete. 2. All weights must be submitted by Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Your watermelon’s weight must be verified by your local Extension Office. Speak to your local Extension Office for assistance with submitting your watermelon. 3. Each 4-H’er may submit one watermelon for the competition. 4. Pictures are required for the top three state awards. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION Cash prizes will be awarded to participants as follows: 1st Place: $100.00 2nd Place: $50.00 3rd Place: $25.00 Any variety of watermelon may be used, though Carolina Cross is highly recommended. You will need as much time as possible for your watermelon to grow to its full size, so you may want to start your seeds indoors and transfer outside after the last frost. 2021 June Dairy Month Poster Contest Who can participate? Every Georgia 4‐H member! Age groups: • Cloverleaf: Grades 4 – 6 in current school year • Junior: Grades 7 – 8 in current school year • Senior: Grades 9 – 12 in current school year Why? To learn more about milk and milk products and their importance to human health. Theme? “Dairy Potter: Real Dairy, Real Delicious” How? 1. Poster must be on standard poster board and must be of uniform size ‐ 14” X 22” (half a poster board) ‐ other sizes are ineligible. 2. Follow the theme: “Dairy Potter: Real Dairy, Real Delicious” 3. Posters should contain only original, hand‐drawn artwork done by the participant. Computer‐generated artwork and text are not acceptable and will result in disqualification of the poster. 4. Do not attach items thicker than the poster board to the poster. 5. Get ideas from television, magazines, parents, and friends. Be creative! Study pictures from your grocery store, a near- by dairy, the Dairy Alliance website (http://thedairyalliance.com), the National Dairy Council (https:// www.nationaldairycouncil.org ), or milk cooperatives for additional ideas. 6. Keep it simple and to the point. 7. Complete a contest entry form and tape/paste it on the back of your poster in the upper right corner. 8. Posters are due to your county 4-H office on: Friday, May 28th by 5:00 pm. Your county will then submit a photo of your poster to the state for judging. Scoring Guidelines Originality – attracts attention, holds interest 40% Follows theme 20% Conveys message – easily understood, well- done design 15% General appearance – well planned, good design; easy to read; neat; no spelling errors 15% Accurate information – factual 10% Prizes County Winners: All county entries in each age group will receive Georgia 4-H Certificates from their county. State Winners: First place ‐ $100 gift card; Second place ‐ $75 gift card; Third place ‐ $50 gift card in each age group. 3
Applications for the 2021-2022 Georgia 4-H Ambassador program are now live! The goal of the 4-H Ambassador program is to prepare 4-H’ers to become knowledgeable in a specific content area so that they can return to their counties and share what they’ve learned with others. This year, there are five ambassa- dor tracks: Healthy Habits, Pollina- tors, Ready-4-Life, STEM, and Wildlife. Descriptions of each track, an application scoring ru- bric, and a sample application, are available upon request. Contact Ms. Lauryn or Mrs. Donna if interested! Wayne County 4-H has summer plans in the works for trips and activities such as bowling, Jekyll Island beach, Savannah Bananas Baseball, paintball/laser tag, crocheting, homemade pet treats and toys, a visit to Aracadeia, fishing, and more! 4
Continuing Community Service Projects: Can Tab Drive & Pennies for Pets We will continue to collect can tabs and spare change throughout the year to donate to our local charities. Your new classroom 4-H clubs can still earn points when you turn these in next year! We donate the can tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Savannah to help keep the cost of operations down for families with sick children, and our Pennies for Pets collection goes to the Wayne County Animal Refuge Foundation (ARF) to assist animals in need of adoption.
