NOTES: *All Honors diplomas require 4 credits of English* 1 Writing sections of either standardized test should not be included in the calculation of this score. The Locating Information test is not included in the calculation of the WorkKeys score. 2 Advanced science refers to courses that are inquire-‐based with laboratory experiences and align with the 11/12 grade standards (or above) or with an AP science course, or with an entry-‐level college course (clearly preparing students for a college freshman-‐level science class, such as anatomy, botany, or astronomy). 3 Program must lead to an industry-‐recognized credential, apprenticeship, or be part of an articulated career pathway which can lead to post-‐secondary credit. 4 The fifth mathematics and science credit for the STEM honors diploma may be fulfilled with a single course. 5 Field Experience refers to experiential learning in either an internship or apprenticeship. Students will document their experiences by describing their understanding in a portfolio. 6 The student portfolio is a collection of experiential learning and competencies based on the student’s field experiences. Students will engage with professionals or scholars in the field while deve4loping their own portfolio or ePortfolio of original work that documents their technical, critical and creative skills representative of their honors focus; students’ work must be reviewed and evaluated by scholars or professionals within the field/area of student in which the students’ work is focused, and the scholars or professionals must be external to the district staff; students will give a pre3sentation to showcase the work and provide an analysis of it to the school and local community. If the student does not complete a field e4xperience, the portfolio can be based on a collection of work related to the student’s honors diploma area of focus. 7 Students must score a minimum of a 6 on the Applied Mathematics WorkKeys Assessment and a minimum of 6 on the Reading for Information WorkKeys Assessment in order to meet the WorkKeys score requirement. The WorkKeys option applies only to the Careen Tech Honors Diploma. 8 These scores are based on the 2016 ACT and SAT assessments. Concordance tables outlining equivalent scores for past and future tests that differ from the 2016 versions will be published on the ODE website. Tables to concord SAT assessments taken prior to March 2016 can be found 5
GRADING SYSTEM The grading system at Orange High School indicates the student’s achievement compared to that of other students carrying the same subject. Plus and minus marks are added to the earned grade for further explanation of progress, and these marks do affect the weight of the grade. Letters Meaning A+, A, A-‐ Superior Work B+, B, B-‐ Above Average C+, C, C-‐ Average D+, D, D-‐ Below Average F Failing-‐No UNIT I Incomplete P Passing (Pass/Fail: see page 5) W/D Withdrawal W/F Withdrawal Failing AU Audit QUALITY POINTS PERCENTAGE* GRADE CP HONORS AP 97 – 100 A+ 4.33 4.83 5.33 93 – 96 A 4 4.5 5 90 – 92 A-‐ 3.67 4.17 4.67 87 – 89 B+ 3.33 3.83 4.33 83 – 86 B 3 3.5 4 80 – 82 B-‐ 2.67 3.17 3.67 77 – 79 C+ 2.33 2.83 3.33 73 – 76 C 2 2.5 3 70 – 72 C-‐ 1.67 2.17 2.67 67 – 69 D+ 1.33 1.83 2.33 63 – 66 D 1 1.5 2 60 – 62 D-‐ 0.67 1.17 1.67 BELOW 60 F 0 0 0 * Grades are not rounded to the nearest point (ie. 92.99 = A-‐) Advanced Placement and Honors classes are indicated on the student’s transcript. CLASS RANK Class Rank is computed at the end of each year by ranking the students in order according to their quality point average. The student having the highest quality point average is number one in the class. Class rank is determined by computing the grades in all subjects except Physical Education and classes taken under the Pass/Fail option. Class Rank is used for internal purposes only and does not appear on the transcript. 6
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT FOR COURSES TAKEN PRIOR TO NINTH GRADE Orange Schools Board Policy 5422 -‐ HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT FOR COURSES TAKEN PRIOR TO NINTH GRADE The Board of Education recognizes that students below the ninth grade take advanced work and believes that certain advanced work should count toward meeting high school graduation requirements. For high school credit to be awarded, the course work must be advanced work taught by a person with a license or certificate that is valid for high school teaching and be designated by the Board as meeting high school curriculum requirements. Only accredited online high school courses and university campus provider courses will be approved. High school courses taken prior to ninth grade will be awarded high school credit, will be recorded on the student transcript with the course name, final grade, and credit earned, and will have the course grade factored into the GPA. In order to be awarded credit for an equivalent high school course prior to ninth grade, prior approval must be obtained from an Orange School counselor. Only accredited online courses and university campus provider courses will be approved. PASS/FAIL GRADING Classes may be offered to students on a pass-‐fail optional grading plan. Instead of the conventional A-‐B-‐C-‐D-‐F grades, a “P” (Passing) or “F” (Failure) will be issued each grading period and as a final grade. The percentage needed to “Pass” a class under the P/F option will be 80%; anything below an 80% will be considered failing. Passing grades will earn the regular amount of credit toward graduation, but the “P” grades will not be considered in determination of cumulative averages used to establish class rank; a failing grade will be a factor in determining the class ranking. Students must earn a “P” in each quarter in order to earn credit. A student is limited to the selection of no more than one class each semester to be graded on this basis. Once committed to this grading procedure, the student is bound to continue it until the end of the course. The decision must be made during the first grading period of the course and the appropriate form must be on file in the Guidance Office before the grade is recorded. Core Courses, other than Physical Education, cannot be taken Pass/Fail. Pass/Fail forms can be found on the Orange website by clicking the following link: PASS/FAIL FORM. HONOR ROLL There are three Honors levels; Highest Honors signifies a GPA of at least 4.0 for each quarter; High Honors signifies a GPA of between 3.5 and 3.99 for each quarter; and Honors signifies a GPA of between 3.0 and 3.49 for each quarter. Students are recognized at the end of each quarter. Any student who receives a grade lower than a C-‐ in any subject for any grading period, is automatically disqualified from any of the three honor rolls. In determining the point averages, letter grades are evaluated as previously described in “Quality Points” and the procedure described in “Class Rank”. FINAL GRADE DETERMINATION Most courses are on the annual promotion basis. This means that the final grade will be determined by averaging the grades of the four marking periods plus the two semester examinations. The marking period grade is twice the weight of the exam grade. SPECIAL SENIOR RECOGNITION The top ten percent of the graduating class, 4.000 students, students receiving the honors diploma, and the valedictorian and salutatorian are determined at the middle of the senior year. The valedictorian shall be the person graduating with the class who has the highest grade-‐point average (rounded to the nearest thousandth) and who has attended Orange High School during all of his or her junior and senior years. The salutatorian shall be the person graduating with the class who has the second highest grade point average (rounded to the nearest thousandth) and who has attended Orange High School during all of his or her junior and senior years. This policy does not preclude the recognition at graduation of other students who have achieved special excellence, including persons who may not qualify to be valedictorian because of previous attendance at other schools 7
ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY AND CO-‐CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS Student participants in athletics shall fulfill all requirements as set forth by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, including the requirement to pass a minimum of five credits in the preceding grading period. The participant must meet all standards set by the Ohio High School Athletic Association By-‐Laws regarding academics, age, amateur status, enrollment and attendance, recruiting, residence and transfers. In order to be eligible in grades 9-‐12, a student must be enrolled in the Orange Schools the grading period immediately proceeding the season they wish to participate. During the preceding grading period, the student must have received passing grades in a minimum of five classes. Physical Education does NOT count toward the credits needed for athletic eligibility. In order to be eligible for a co-‐curricular, interscholastic and non-‐interscholastic extra-‐curricular activity, a student must have maintained at least a 1.0 GPA and must have received passing grades in a minimum of five (5) one-‐credit courses or the equivalent (each which counts towards graduation) for the grading period prior to the grading period in which he/she wishes to participate. However, any participating student with a GPA of 2.0 or below must participate in academic study table intervention programming for the grading period in which he/she wishes to participate. Any student participating in College Credit Plus courses must self-‐report his/her quarterly grades to the Director of Athletics no later than the final day of the OHS quarter. SCHEDULE AND LEVEL CHANGES It is the policy of Orange High School that all students maintain a minimum of six (6) academic courses. Students are registered for the following year in February and March and are permitted to make changes until April 12. Student schedules will only be altered if they meet one of the following criteria: 1. Student does not have the minimum number of classes for each semester 2. Successful completion of summer course work 3. Without dropping any scheduled courses, a student may add additional course(s) where enrollment permits and without any alteration to the original schedule. Dropping a Course: A student may withdraw from a class that is above the minimum requirement of 6 classes for all grades without penalty no later than the last Friday in September. Any student-‐initiated withdrawal after this time will result in a WF unless the withdrawal is necessitated by a long-‐term illness. Adding a Course: Students will not be allowed to add a course to their schedule after the first full week of school for yearlong courses. For second semester courses, students will not be allowed to add a course after the first full week of the third quarter. Lowering a Level: Students will not be allowed to decrease levels (for example: Honors Physics to CP Physics) after the last Friday in September. If a student changes levels within the allotted time frame, the grade from the original course will transfer to the new course. Overriding Recommendations: A teacher recommendation is required for all Honors and AP level courses. It is the philosophy of Orange High School that the teacher recommendation(s) should be followed in order to provide the greatest opportunity for the academic and emotional success of the student. **ANY SCHEDULE ALTERATION IS CONTINGENT UPON COURSE AVAILABILITY & CLASS SIZE 8
SUMMER SCHOOL/REMEDIATION Summer school is an option both for remediation and enrichment although only grades reflected on a school transcript are included in the student’s GPA. Every summer school course (make-‐up or enrichment) must be first approved by the student’s counselor. Students electing to take a summer course through a private tutor must first complete the application process. Remedial work in summer school or private tutoring is strongly encouraged for those students who elect to enroll in an advanced level course (e.g. Spanish II, Advanced Algebra), but have not maintained a “C” or better average in the course immediately preceding in the sequence (e.g. Spanish I, Algebra I). A senior who fails a required course or who lacks sufficient units for graduation may attend an accredited summer school or credit recovery program to become eligible to receive a diploma in August. A senior who has not earned the required units and fulfilled all course requirements, passed all required state testing, and other school obligations may not participate in the Commencement activities. Any and all fees associated with remedial or summer course work are the sole responsibility of the student. EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS Students in grades seven through twelve may participate full or part time at a participating college/university for high school and/or college credit. The College Credit Plus program offers highly motivated students the opportunity to simultaneously earn high school credit and postsecondary credit for college-‐level courses at no cost to the student. Orange High School continues to be responsible for providing a comprehensive and challenging college preparatory curriculum including Advanced Placement and other advanced level courses for students. College courses should either contribute to or supplement the broad academic preparation needed by high school students. Acceptance into the college or university is at the discretion of each college/university. Interested students should speak with their counselor, and complete the “Intent to Participate” form. Forms and information can be found on the Orange Guidance Website by clicking the following link and downloading College Credit Plus Forms: http://www.orangeschools.org/schools/guidance/Forms There are two pathways within the CCP program that students can choose (Example Pathways can be found in the Appendix.): Students can enroll in single college/university courses OR Students can enroll as a part-‐time student (15 credit hours) or as a full-‐time student (30 credit hours) Some courses may be taught at Orange High School and information will be distributed once course offerings are finalized with the colleges/universities. CREDIT FLEXIBILITY Credit Flexibility is any independent or group learning experience that happens beyond the traditional school schedule. Students engaged in Credit Flexibility options will gain new learning and knowledge. Credit Flexibility differs from the “test-‐out” method where students feel they have already mastered content of a specific course in the district curriculum and choose to take a district-‐approved assessment in order to demonstrate their knowledge. Any student may apply for course credit to be awarded through the Orange Schools Credit Flexibility Application form. The student will submit an application on the district Credit Flexibility Application form. All required information must be presented. The student may be required to provide supporting documentation as determined by the Guidance Counselor, Principal, or the Principal’s Committee. All processes and procedures must be completely followed in order for credit to possibly be granted. 9
