Before you apply... GUIDANCE Before registering for a module, please take the time to read the module descriptor and if you have any further questions, please get in touch with us. WHAT LEVEL IS MY MODULE? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Each module is assigned a level. We recommend that you begin Open Learning with level 1 modules. The levels represent academic progression, with the higher levels assuming that you have already mastered the key concepts and skills required for academic writing and critical reflection. UPGRADING TO CREDIT If you are unsure about whether you want to take a module for credit, we encourage you to first register for audit. You have three weeks from the start of the semester to upgrade to credit. Please note it will not be possible to apply for a partial refund of fees if you change your mind. Students who have taken modules for credit cite a number of reasons for doing this: • Motivated to earn credits for their learning • Have a preference for the structures and deadlines imposed when taking a course for credit • Consider that they learn more when they are required to complete assignments and study • Like the idea that they have the potential to add to their accredited modules in the future UCD LIBRARY A huge benefit of Open Learning is the access it gives to you UCD’s libraries and catalogues including the library’s online resources. As an Open Learner you’ll have access to all of UCD’s libraries. UCD CONNECT / UCD EMAIL ADDRESS UCD Connect provides access to a wide range of University services and information. Accessed via the Internet, UCD Connect is always available whether you’re on or off campus. To access UCD Connect, launch a web browser, go to www.ucd.ie and select UCD Connect (top right corner). As a UCD student, you will also have access to your own UCD Connect email address. 8 | PART-TIME PROGRAMME 2018/19 UCD
COMMUTING TO UCD As an Open Learner, you can apply for a UCD parking permit. Although this does not guarantee you a parking space, you will be able to park in the designated staff and student parking areas. For a nominal fee, students can apply for a permit on a semester by semester basis. Alternatively there are also pay per hour parking spaces and premium parking spaces available on campus. For more information http://www.ucd.ie/students/parking.html UCD is serviced by many bus routes and a shuttle bus service from the Dart. For more visit www.ucdestates.ie/commuting REFUNDS POLICY UCD Access and Lifelong Learning operates a strict no refund policy. However, if you experience illness or other extenuating circumstances, you can make an application for extenuating circumstances. If you’ve registered for credit and wish to revert to audit, you can request a change in your registration status. The deadline for this is the Friday of Week 6 in each semester, however a partial refund of fees will not be possible. UCD PART-TIME PROGRAMME 2018/19 | 9

College of Arts & Humanities SCHOOL OF CLASSICS The UCD School of Classics is the largest centre of Classical studies in Ireland. The School is also home to a Classical Museum which was established by Henry Browne, Professor of Greek from 1909 to 1922. Classics is the study of the history, literature, and material culture of the Greek and Roman Mediterranean from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. It is an exciting, interdisciplinary subject which inspired the Renaissance and remains central to the understanding of modern European culture and society. Open Learning students can study the history, literature, art and archaeology of the ancient world by taking modules in the Greek and Roman Civilization programme. No Greek or Latin is required as texts are studied in translation. In 2018-19, the School of Classics will be offering 15 Open Learning modules. College of Arts & Humanities SCHOOL OF ENGLISH, DRAMA AND FILM English, Drama and Film are disciplines that engage critically with written, spoken and performed media from early manuscripts to contemporary blogs. The focus of the School’s activities is on high quality pedagogy informed by cutting edge research, and on teaching core skills for work and life: critical thinking, excellent written communication, the ability to synthesize, organize and present complex ideas. Our disciplines educate students in the history and practices of theatre and performance, of media and cultural production, of literary and cultural production, and of creative writing. The School’s origins go back to the foundation of UCD, and we have had a distinguished tradition of research, but also in the cultural life and practice of the state. Our current Head of School is Professor Danielle Clarke. In 2018-19 the School of English, Drama and Film will be offering 27 Open Learning Modules. College of Arts & Humanities SCHOOL OF HISTORY The School of History at UCD is the perfect environment for anyone who has a love of history. Its modules – all taught by experts in their field who bring their new research to the classroom – create for everyone the opportunity to explore the past. Sometimes this can mean looking afresh at what might appear to be familiar subjects and on other occasions it means investigating entirely new areas of study. It is this willingness to embrace new ideas and new approaches that defines the School of History. In 2018-19, the School of History will be offering 21 Open Learning modules.
