Richmond Public School’s Mid-Year PALS assessment window is from January 5–16, 2015. All assessment data must be online by January 22, 2015. Assessments are administered to all students in grades kindergarten through second unless they met the requirements for the High Benchmark designation on the Fall Assessment. Assess all third grade students who did not meet the Fall Benchmark and were identified. Fourth and Fifth Grade students are assessed at the discretion of the school literacy team. The testing materials for Mid-Year PALS, Form C assessment, can be found online on the PALS website: pals@virginina.edu. Click the Mid-Year Materials tab. Please be aware that many of the Mid-Year materials have changed. Please print the new materials and discard the old materials. It is the expectation that the ERI Coordinator will review the protocol and ensure the following: • A school-wide testing plan is in place. • All teachers have been trained in the administration of the PALS assessments. • All teachers receive a review prior to assessing students utilizing the free PALS Marketplace professional development online course and review the Administration and Scoring guidelines. (pd.casenex.com). • Teachers assess their own students. • Assessments are given in a testing environment that best benefits the students – calm, quiet, and monitored. • Assessments are given in small groups or individually as needed. All of us in literacy leadership at the district level are eager to support your efforts. Let us know how we can assist you.Your dedication and commitment to the assessment process is appreciated. 1 Page 7

Materials • Ensure teachers receive a complete set of PALS Assessment Materials. Assessment kits should contain the following items: Administration and Scoring Guide, Teacher Packet, Student Packet, Readiness & Preprimer books, Concept of Word book, and all consumable materials – student summary sheet, class summary sheet, and student spelling sheet. • Maintain accurate inventories and adhere to a plan for organizing materials. Linwood Holton Elementary School 1600 West Laburnum Avenue Richmond, Virginia 23227-4416 Telephone (804) 228-5310 Office of The Principal • Distribute PALS Assessment materials to each teacher, including the Title I Reading Specialist, before the school-wide PALS Administration Training. Teachers verify receipt of materials and acknowledge the expectation to maintain all components of the kits. • Collect and store all PALS Assessment materials and completed inventories at the end of the year. The ERI Coordinator checks in all materials and updates the school’s inventory. • Provide timers to all teachers to use when administering the oral reading passages. Please make sure that all timers are working before assessment begins. Training • Training all K-3 teachers in PALS testing procedures is the responsibility of each school. • Attendance at a school level training is required for all teachers administering the PALS test. • Review the PALS Administration and Scoring Guide to ensure accurate and standardized administration and scoring. Managing Class List • Manage the Class List on the PALS website prior to the start of testing. Use the Student Actions tab to add, transfer, or remove students. Search for students already in the PALS database using the STI (State Testing Identification) numbers. If the student is not in the PALS database you must enter the STI number and create a student profile by adding all required student information. Testing Environment • Plan appropriate activities for students while they are waiting to test. These activities should be meaningful and purposeful practice. • Prepare students for optimum testing success – positive, focused, organized, and quiet. • Separate the students during the Group Rhyme and Group Beginning Sound Awareness sections so they cannot see their neighbor’s test booklet. Administer individually as needed. • Prepare a quiet place to administer the remaining PALS sub-tests to individual students. • Spread the sub-tests over several days to get the BEST testing success. District Administration Requirements • Determine each student’s instructional oral reading level using the following criteria: 1. Scores between 90-97% accuracy on a passage Primer or above or 85% for Readiness and Preprimer. 2. Scores a fluency rating of 3 according to the criterion. 3. Answers 5 or more comprehension questions correctly. 2 Page 1

Linwood Holton Elementary School 1600 West Laburnum Avenue Richmond, Virginia 23227-4416 Telephone (804) 228-5310 Office of The Principal Analyzing PALS Class Summary Reports – Mid-Year Notes There are no benchmarks for Mid-Year PALS. It is recommended that mid-year scores be examined in relation to fall scores to determine the degree of progress of individual students in the area of literacy skills. The PALS office suggests mid-year ranges, which were used to develop this color-coding chart. Fluency is not included in the 1st grade color-coding, but the goal is for students to read 25 words per minute at mid-year on a 1st grade passage. Considerations Kindergarten – Monitor true Concept of Word closely as this is critical for successful word identification strategy development. 1st Grade - Please note that the reading level indicated on the PALS Class Summary Sheet is an instructional reading level. In January, students in 1st grade should be at the instructional reading level of 1st grade. Please pay close attention to those students that are still at a Primer reading level and plan instructional interventions to meet their needs. At the end of the school year, 1st grade students should be reading 1st grade material at an independent level and prepared for instruction on a 2nd grade level. This is critical for successful reading. 2nd & 3rd Grade – Monitor continued improvement in fluency. Reading rate should match grade level expectations. Monitor comprehension as well. Mid-year is the time to adjust instruction during teacher directed small groups within the reading block as well as the intervention block. 2 Page 6

Mrs. Ragland will turn in what has already been submitted to her when we leave for the holiday. She will receive the others when staff return from the holiday. The deadline to receive registrations is January 13, 2015. Students should have already selected what they will perform and have practiced at home. I would like to start rehearsals here shortly after the deadline. Mrs. Ragland The Creative Writing Festival is coming and we want to be ready. Please begin to collect writing samples from your students. We would like to have several writing samples from each class. Selections should be typed, proofed for errors, and illustrated. Selections may be done whole class or individually and include all types of writing (prose/poetry, short story, plays, fiction, non-fiction, ABC or number books, fairy tales, etc.). If you have any questions or need some help, please see Martin in Rm. 117. Thanks for your support as we are counting on you and your students to represent our school and make us all proud. 2nd Grade swimming starts in January. 2 Page 7
