ONTARIO EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY CONFERENCE January 27-29th, 2018 Barrie, On Hosted by: University of Ottawa
OEP 2019 January 27, 2019 Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is with great pleasure and honour that we extend to you a warm welcome to the 2019 Ontario Exercise Physiology Conference. This annual event, originating in the early 1970’s, brings together undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, faculty, and individuals from a wide range of professional backgrounds from across Ontario for a weekend of science as we share knowledge and ideas. We would like to congratulate Drs. Jeremy Simpson, Jamie Burr, and Philip Millar for an outstanding OEP 2018! Interest and support for OEP continues to grow and this year is no exception. We are pleased to host 100 student presentations, 120 conference attendees, and three student award sessions. This year we are pleased to launch two new student award symposia, including the CSEP-APNM Student Award and the AJP-Cell Student Award. These symposia will be accompanied by Q&A sessions on the ‘Benefits of CSEP Student Membership’ hosted by Taniya Nagpal (CSEP Graduate Student Executive Chair), and ‘How to Publish in AJP-Cell’, hosted by Dr. Thomas Hawke (Associate Professor, McMaster University). We are pleased to welcome Dr. Kristi Adamo, Associate Professor in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa as our 2019 keynote speaker. Kristi will share her expertise in early lifestyle intervention and career trajectory highlights that have led her to her current faculty position. We are excited to host an expert panel that will share their experience and advice from careers in academia, industry, health and fitness, and granting agencies. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Dan Moore (Assistant Professor, University of Toronto), Jen Oliver (Founder and CEO, FitMama Global Inc.), and Dr. Maheen Ceizar (Research Specialist, MS Society of Canada) to our panel. A strong OEP tradition is the social event, which provides opportunities for networking and interacting with fellow friends and researchers. In keeping with this tradition, we are collaborating with Redline Brewhouse for a fantastic evening of food, tasting, and socializing. We would like to acknowledge our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have committed their time to plan, organize, and run this conference. We are very grateful for their time and dedication. Finally, we are so grateful for the support from our sponsors - this meeting would not be possible without their generous contributions. Thank you! We hope that OEP 2019 will provide a wonderful forum to stimulate and share ideas, learn new things, and build bridges in science and knowledge. Yours sincerely, Michael De Lisio & Lara Pilutti Co-Chairs, OEP 2019 2

OEP 2019 AJP-Cell Award Symposium Finalists Leon Chi Exercise-induced signaling in the skeletal muscle of myotonic dystrophy type 1 mice Grace Martin Ultrastructural Changes of Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria in Xin-deficient Mice Reinnier Padilla The Effect of Single-Leg Aerobic Exercise on the Satellite Cell Response Fasih Rahman Myogenic and Fibrogenic Potential of Aged Skeletal Muscle During Regeneration Patrick Turnbull Application of Mitochondrial Bioenergetics to Cancer: Fatty Acid-Induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Growth is Mediated by Decreasing Mitochondrial H2O2 Emission and Increased Glutathione Levels Q&A: How to Publish in AJP-Cell? Dr. Thomas Hawke, PhD Associate Professor, Dept. of Pathology & Molecular Medicine McMaster University I am a graduate of the University of Guelph. I undertook a MSc and a PhD under the supervision of Dr. Michael Lindinger where we studied the role of caffeine metabolites in modulating Na+ and K+regulation. After graduating in 2000, I spent 3 years as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. There I worked on muscle stem cell regulation with Dr. Daniel Garry. In 2003, I accepted a faculty position in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science at York University in Toronto, ON. My research portfolio reflected my training with investigations that spanned molecular to physiological. In 2005, I was invited by Dr. Shane Kanatous (Colo. St. University) to be part of an Antarctica research expedition investigating the molecular mechanisms allowing Weddell Seals to develop into elite divers. This was an amazing opportunity to undertake science in one of the most extreme places in the world. As the pictures can attest to, it was as beautiful as it was intimidating. In 2009, I accepted an Associate Professor position at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. Here my lab focus has expanded to include both human and rodent studies with a primary goal of translating our rodent findings to the human condition. 7
