OLLI at Indiana State University Mission Statement The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a forum for adults of all academic and economic backgrounds to learn about a wide variety of subjects they find interesting and engaging. It is made possible by the substantial support of the Bernard Osher Foundation and Indiana State University. These supporters make it possible for OLLI to offer these unique learning opportunities to residents of the Wabash Valley. Who are OLLI at ISU Members? Our members come from many different backgrounds with one common purpose: they all want to learn. What each member wants to learn differs, of course, which is why OLLI offers an enormous range of topics. But all of the learning takes place in a setting that has no pressure. That is, without tests, grades, and prerequisites. Also, there is no required homework and every aspect of participation is voluntary! In addition, wherever members get together – in classes, for special events, or at weekly presentations—they can meet new people, enjoy casual conversations, and share their experiences and opinions. Membership Best of all, as one member said, “The price is right!” Membership is $40 for one year (September - August) or $20 per semester: Fall (Sept. – Dec.), Winter (Jan. – April), Summer (May – August). The Perfect Time to Give Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who have given so generously in response to our 2020-2021 fundraising efforts. For those still considering a gift, we would like to challenge you to make the same investment in our institute that the Osher Foundation and other OLLI members have done by asking you to contribute to the institute that has become a large part of the lives of individuals in our community. Landini Center for the Performing & Fine Arts, Recital Hall 300 N 7th Street, Terre Haute Cost: $15 An originator of big-band jazz, Duke Ellington was an American composer, pianist and bandleader who composed thousands of scores over his 50-year career. Join us for a three session class honoring this ledgend of jazz. Duke Ellington Concert The first session will be a performance of Duke Ellington music performed by John Spicknall and Joe Deal. Duke Ellington: American, Composer Most of us know Duke Ellington to be a major figure in the history of jazz music. His tunes dominate the Great American Songbook and his ensemble helped define the big-band, dance-hall sound of popular music in 1930s and 40s. But Ellington’s music often defies easy categorization, from his songs that resist simple pop-song formulas to his extended compositions in more “classical” styles. This session celebrates the life and work of Duke Ellington as a pianist, composer, and bandleader, and surveys his diverse musical output, from his jazz standards to his works for symphony orchestra to his Sacred Concerts. Songs for Duke: The Tribute Poem and Duke Ellington Writing in praise of the departed or in homage to other forms of art are well-established practices in poetry. These two types of poetry fuse into a specific subgenre known as the tribute poem, which honors the life and work of an artist. This session will examine the conventions of the tribute poem and center on a discussion of works that consider the impacts and legacy of Duke Ellington, one of the foremost jazz musicians, composers, and bandleaders of the twentieth century.
